2011 German Grand Prix

Could someone, from the USA who has watched the previous races on FOX, not speed, explain the faint ringtone like sound every 2-3 seconds?
Every race I've watched on fox has that sound and it goes the length of the broadcast. It sounds like someone at the sound booth left their phone on and it keeps ringing, clearly that can't be it.

Vettel passed Alonso on lap 2 and Kobayashi on lap 20.

Vettel did not pass Alonso. Alonso made a mistake and went offtrack. And with all due respect, passing a Sauber is really not that big of a feat nowadays.

Are you seriously suggesting that Vettel is as good at passing as Hamilton? Or Schumacher? Or Alonso for that matter?

Well he's certainly better than Schumacher. 50% of his attempts to pass anyone results in a front wing being put in casualty :dunce: To be honest, Vettel doesn't need to prove his worth at overtaking because he's always at the front :dunce:

I thought I'd say congratulations to Lewis Hamilton, Adrian Sutil and Kamui Kobayashi. Sutil was the best german driver of the day I would say. Happy that McLaren did not mess up the pit stops and also did not call him early on his first few stints. Shame that Massa and Ferrari could not hold on to the final position as that means Vettel really has not lost much out. I wonder what would have happened if Vettel did not have a big points cushion, would he have been a bit more ragged in trying to get past Massa and got a DNF instead? Next race will be telling in how much more downforce Red Bull has over the competition.

The wheels are definitely falling of Mclarens wagon aren't they Eddie...:dunce:

It's great to see 3 different teams all so competitive, it makes for very exciting racing, just like today.

I've watched the races on FOX and haven't heard any sounds that you have described.

Looks like Ferrari need to work on their pit stops.

Yes, he is probably the best qualifier since Senna.

The problem is that when he is not on pole he cannot pass (other than in the pits)

I guess you haven't watched Vettel closely enough then. I just find it laughable when people say a 24 year old driver has to prove his skills after being the youngest ever driver to score a point, a pole, a win and a title.

Try again.

Great race for Lewis, all around good weekend for him. He said he had come to Germany on a buzz from Silverstone and it showed.

I have said, repeatedly, that he is a fabulous hotlapper. However, I maintain that he has not shown any champion like skills when it comes to passing. How can this be a controversial topic? Every time he is not leading on the first lap he gives the same type of lackluster performance as he did today. It's very clear to anyone who has even a passing interest in F1.

Laughable, indeed. Imagine the gall of people who want to see Vettel win it from anyplace other than first. People can be so outrageous sometimes.

Well he is certainly not the one who holds any kind of record or title for delivering breathtaking overtaking.

It's reasonably clear Vettel isn't a confident overtaker, but the amount of stick he gets for a small fault in his abilities is ridiculous. People throw rocks at things that shine. I'm willing to bet he was a much more aggressive driver back in the STR days when his drive depended on his performance. Most of the time he doesn't need to overtake, but he did sit behind Massa for 20 laps today. That said Alonso sat behind Petrov for half a race last year when his championship depended on it, yet you don't hear anyone say Alonso is a sheepish overtaker.

Well, Webber was stuck behind someone as well (can't remember who) for quite a long way through the race so I wouldn't think that's a good example as the track seems to be impossible to overtake on. I mean the only overtake I can remember in that race was Kubica on Kobayashi.

Massa just had a bad stop. Ferrari clocked the fastest ptistops all race, with Alonso doing 3.2s on 2 consecutive stops.

No such title exists.

Too bad that Ferrari are such an efficient team. At least when Alonso is concerned.

The reason Vettel couldn't pass Massa was because Massa himself was clocking times under 1'35. Any driver will face difficulties overtaking a driver barely a tenth slower than you.

Ina bid to get a cockpit for the next year,
Heidfeld is trying to fly like a Petrov!

10-4 to that. And it's not like Massa is all that easy to pass. He might be slow, but he's also stubborn. Just ask Button. Or Alonso (heh heh).

I didn't get the impression that Vettel was trying all that hard to complete the pass -- or that the team wanted him to. He did get a radio telling him to be sensible and bag the points, after all.

He only got a 5.4 from the Bulgarian judge. Not enough hang time. :)

Has Heidfeld done anything as well as Petrov this year?

That said, Renault to my recollection are in fact the only team outside the Big 3 to score podiums this year.

Not quite sure, but during the super slow-mo replay of Heidfeld's crash, it looked like he was gesturing to Buemi while he was in mid-air over the gravel.
