The rear lights of cars such as the Altezza are completely different to cars with proper integrated red LED's with clear covers.

Eunos_Cosmo; The picture of the Mazda 3 in your post still has the red covers over the brake lights. I'm talking about tail lights like this and this. They look just as clean as the headlights on the front of the car.

Again, I'm not talking about cars with a combination of transparent red covers and clear covers. They look messy... And I agree with you both there.

I don't get the point you're trying to convey. Red covered brake lights are perfectly acceptable because pretty much every car on the market have them and pretty much every car you see on the road. 2003 my arse! Some cars do look good without it, DBS is an example, but for everything else. I'm sorry, right a complaint to every car manufacturer if you have to. But the fact is, apart from you, who cares?!?!?

Here's the thing, though, Jaco: those look like ****.

Oh, bollocks... Maybe in 20 years when clear tail lights are more mainstream, your opinions will change. I don't want to argue about personal taste. My first post was only supposed to be a light-hearted comment. ;)

This grainy photo of the 2014 Mazda 3 apparently popped up on a Russian Facebook, of all places. Source.
Definitely a move in the wrong direction compared to the previous Mazda 3 (imho).

Mmmm, I'm quite liking the new 3 from what I see. Much better IMO than the current joker smile 3. Not sure if I like it more than my '05 model though :sly:

In a world of LED's, red covers seem rather pointless and outdated. Clear lights like the previous Mazda 3 look much more modern and cleaner. It just feels like they've taken a step back.

I have to disagree, clear lights was a fad started mainly by the Lexus IS300 (as Eunos_Cosmo mentioned) in the early 2000's and became a ricer look when after market clusters started flooding the market to copy the style. They look cheap and nasty and still do today (Prius and Leaf ones look dreadful) and the new LED after market boy racer ones look even worse IMO!

There is nothing classier than having red tinted lenses with interesting LED arrangements inside the cluster like most upmarket car companies do (Audi particularly does fancy stuff).

Mazda currently have to have some of the blandest designs out there, this 3 looks like any other Hyundai or Kia, actually they have more style and are much cheaper.

I finally saw a new 6 in person up close the other day in the fantastic red color, and it's damn sexy.

I'll wait on judging this one until I see it in person.

Since there is essentially nothing about the next MX-5 yet, I'm guessing this will be the 3, so the full reveal will be tomorrow.

I'm told I'm observant, and I usually spot little things about cars, yet somehow I never even noticed the current 3 has clear taillights until everyone here mentioned the change. The new one looks quite a bit more upmarket, almost a little reminiscent of an Alfa Romeo Giulietta in the profile. I also prefer the new placement of the license plate on the trunk rather than in the bumper as it's been until now. Nice looking car.

I'm not a huge fan of the rear end, but the front looks great! Also, the interior looks very nice.

It kinda looks like a rounded-edges Delta HF Integrale.

Wow. It looks good. That 2.5L is gonna make that thing quite peppy considering they cut 200lbs off the thing! I like it!

Mazda already confirmed the body styling is global, so no differences there. I'd post the updated Autoblog article but it will just say the same thing.

Liftgate as in hatchback? Same, no?

Also, Autoblog just posted that the Sedan will be shown in the next 5 weeks or so.

Jalopnik has the car in US-spec. We get the 2.0 and 2.5 Skyactiv engines, the same options as in the CX5.

I'm surprised they're offering both at the start. I'd have figured they'd gone 2.0L only initially, gauge interest, and then offer the bigger one. Either way, I'm hoping they undercut the competition by a similar amount. I'd figure if they could undercut the Focus by at least $1500, that'd be a great place to start.

I want one that hauls ass and gets at least 35mpg.

Is it just me or do Mazdas with the new Kodo grille look like Koala Bears? :dunce:

But still, it looks like a big step up from the previous two, which, while not boring, weren't particularly exciting looking. This one looks a great deal more interesting and a bit more upmarket than the last one. The rear looks really nice too.

I'm loving Mazda's new interior designs.

People are calling them bland now, but I think interiors in most cars have gone over the top, tech-crazy. It's like the 1980s all over again. The design of this 3 interior is very elegant and restrained. I wouldn't be surprised if simpler interior design starts to make a comeback in the next few years.

I agree with this. Most inteiors now are ugly or overcomplicated, or both. Honda is a prime example of this, mainly in hteir higher level cars. Mazda's got the right idea. Also, I love their steering wheels, which doesn't hurt them.
