2016 Pirelli Spanish Grand Prix

Drivers are still able to adjust their power modes from the cockpit, are they not? If so, then I struggle to understand why there's a debate about power modes at all.
Yes. That is the point. Rosberg changed modes but made a mistake and changed to a power mode much less than he wanted.

Nobody has so far explained how Rosberg got around Hamilton. Hamilton must have made some kind of mistake, no?

Hamilton dove to the inside to defend and Rosberg got by on the outside of turn 1.

Either Hamilton got bogged down in the second phase of the launch (which can happen), or Rosberg used more ERS in the run up to turn one.

You're misunderstanding folks, he was in the wrong harvest/regen mode which meant he ran out of electrical juice way before he should have done, ie turn 4. There was nothing wrong with his car in the first three corners.

Slipstream down a really long straight. Lewis was ahead, but Rosberg just got in his slipstream and flew past.

Bottom line, Hamilton lost the race in the first corner. For whatever reason, he was too slow through turn 1 after a notably good initial start.

How fast when they reach braking point into the 1st turn from start line ? I doubt slipstreaming at that velocity will gain that much speed difference to pass.

originally i thought it was a racing incident and at least a foolish move by Lewis but at that time i did not realize that Rosberg was harvesting. Rosberg was harvesting, he knew the car was significantly slower and he still shoved his car in front creating a dangerous collision. What if Lewis wasnt alongside? There is no way Lewis coulda slowed down with that speed difference in that short distance.

Rosberg was definitely willing to check him off, and Hamilton was willing to go to the grass and keep his foot in it. But you know what? It was good for the sport and it probably doesn't matter in the slightest in the long run of the season.

Lewis would have attempted to defend if he were in Nico's position also. It's not like Rosberg's car had a problem that couldn't be solved just by turning a dial, and in that case no racing driver worth their salt will do anything other than turn that dial back to where it needs to be, and defend their position hard.

Yeah, I had to dig a bit to find the explanation.

The more I find out, the more it's looking like the perfect set of circumstances leading to disaster. Hamilton noticed the error and tried to take advantage. Rosberg tried to block in a situation where the wrong setting meant he was doing it at a slower speed than normal. Otherwise, it would've been a routine standard block of the inside line.
Not that it mattered in the end, but Alonso reveals he was ordered to stay behind Button

Doubt he would've been able to pass him even without the orders anyways, especially at this track.

Well, at least Kvyat got his and Toro Rosso's first Fastest Laps...

Yet this is going to be buried under the headlines as it falls on the day his replacement becomes the youngest winner in the sport's history.

He can't catch a break at the moment.

Wasn't he like the last driver to pit, I don't really call it that much of an achievement.

"Didn't Verstappen win only because the two Mercs crashed out on lap one? I don't really call it that much of an achievment."

A win is a win and a fastest lap is a fastest lap.

To compare the two is simple minded since we know how much the tyre overlap is here.

Call it a fastest lap sure but an achievement, not really.

I wasn't even calling it a particularly notable achievement. My point was intimating that any press coverage about him getting fastest lap, which usually is a statistic reported about even if only briefly, would be buried under the headlines generated by his RBR replacement, adding to the disappointment surrounding his season so far.

Aaaand Team Redline wins the Spanish GP...oops wrong game  Seriously though congrats to Max 👍 I was expecting him to win sometime this season, but not this soon! He's inspiring and depressing to young people everywhere :P
