Someone call HBO; I have a great idea for a new series - Bernie Ecclestone, Hostage Negotiatior.

He will give you what seems like a great deal at the start then suddenly add terms, conditions and costs which will increase year on year till you feel that maybe keeping the hostage was better!

Or maybe he will given them a couple of tickets to the Brazilian GP and say it's a far swap!

As for modern era Olympics accommodation I think Beijing had the best built village. It was of the highest quality as was everything constructed for that games because China threw money at it like there was no tomorrow. Also it was their debut on the world stage and if things didn't look perfect the people responsible would end up in some forest in Mongolia!

I hope Alexey Lovchev is clean and allowed to compete. I really want to see more super heavyweight weight lifting records

Nope. What was I thinking? Of course, he's out. Surprise! The top 3 105+kg lifters are all juiced.

Rio 2016, Rule 40...

Just as a comparison, but I remember not so long ago at Euro 2012 that Bendtner got banned for a game (and fined for 100k) for a piece of ambush marketing, whilst various FA's were getting fined much less for fans being racist... and here we are now, once again the powers that be are more interested in protecting their revenue's over the integrity of the competition.

I mean, having a medal revoked because a personal sponsor tweeted their congratulations? Be serious please! I'm becoming more and more inclined to give this year a miss...

article
incidents have turned the torch into a symbol of the organizational glitches and social discontent overshadowing South America's first Olympics.

Highlight reels of torch mishaps have gone viral online, including several attempts to extinguish the flame, runners falling over, a police motorbike crashing into the parade, a man attempting to seize the torch, and political protests.

In June, a rare, captive jaguar — the same animal chosen as Brazil's Olympic mascot — was shot dead after escaping handlers at a torch ceremony.

There's also fecal matter in the water

There have been graffiti protests over people getting run off by the olympic committee.

There's also a slew of racist graffiti over people from certain parts of the world coming to participate.

And then there's the concern over a lack of medical facilities and police.

"The warning over a lack of hospitals - graffitied onto the side of a motorway in the city - will be especially worrying to travellers amid fears over the contagious Zika virus. "

Who was up for the olympics besides rio again?

wikipedia
Rio de Janeiro with three of the six other Applicant cities—Chicago, Madrid and Tokyo; over Baku, Doha and Prague

There were some better options on that list.

If you drink just 3 teaspoons of the bay's water you have a 99% chance of catching something that could possibly kill you.

When doing water activities the chances of getting water in your mouth I would say are pretty high...

I'm probably going to be hated by making this comment: I really hope these games are a massive failure and a complete embarrassment for both Brazil and the IOC.

Countries like Brazil, South Africa, and Qatar should not be spending billions of dollars on a month long event (World Cup or olympics). Those billions of dollars should be spent on improving welfare services, cleaning up the environment, improving education, and improving public safety. All of which Brazil lacks compared to developed nations.

Finding it hard to get excited about the Olympics this time round. A little unfair perhaps after London, especially from a British perspective, but I'm more interested in all the negatives, doping scandals and mess surrounding this one that the event itself. That can't be right, can it?

None of the Brazilian athletes haven't been tested for doping from in July, from the 1st till the 24th.
The sports ministry says it's because the lab in Rio de Janeiro has been shut down.

This is going great.

I feel all the negative stories have certainly taken the enthusiasm out of the whole thing, I'm usually quite excited to see an Olympics but not so much this time. I'm just sitting there wondering when the first bad thing is going to happen... :ill:

The first bad thing about these Olympics happened in 2009.

That stand point would have made sense when Brazil was making it's bid, but the fact is, it's now happening, if it goes badly it can only be bad for Brazil. I 100% agree it was a lousy decision, but now Brazil needs to capitalize on this as much as possible. They need investment, not charity. Messing up the Olympics, whilst telling the world you don't have basic infrastructure isn't going to get the rest of the world to provide your basic infrastructure, it's just going to make them think your country is an incompetent crap hole and they're going to steer clear of it.

I don't understand why the Olympic park looks like an grey concrete industrial estate with carparks, it appears decidedly less green than the design images suggested it would be. Has someone nicked all the grass and plants?

Brazil is meant to be lush and jungle like, what happened?

Also, it's started.....

Sorry, it would only let me post 5 tweets per post.

This stuff is so unnecessary and so easy to resolve with just a little more effort on everyone's part.

I can fully understand that the people working on the Olympic facilities are a bit unmotivated. Dumping billions into something temporary and simply forget about the Brazilians themselves.

Edit.

Moroccan boxer Hassan Saad has been arrested for attempted rape of 2 waitresses. He'll be spending the next 15 days behind bars waiting for the investigation.

I get that but there are better ways at showing your unhappiness about the whole situation. If it's your job to tile bathrooms and put up shower curtains (and your getting paid to do it) then you really should do it to the best of your abilities instead of slacking off as a protest and publicly humiliating your country on the global stage. Not to mention making innocent athletes suffer in sub standard accommodation.

It's all a bit like a 70s sitcom or Carry On Abroad.

Nice to see a Moroccan boxer has already been arrested for an alleged sexual assault on two female cleaners in the Olympic Village. Fast work there!

Many athletes talking about the great laid back atmosphere and I think some of them have taken it literally  like they are on a 2 week Magaluf bender! I don't think we will be seeing many world records broken this time, unless of course they are all on drugs

Have they surpassed the housing disaster of the Sochi olympics yet?

It gets all the more depressing when you realise that's where Jacarepagua used to be. :(

The Opening Ceremony has been going for nearly twenty minutes, and so far, nothing has gone wrong. But it goes for four and a half hours, so there's still plenty of time.
