So, I'm thinking about buying a truck. Can anyone guess what this is?

I had no idea that REPUs existed. I thought this was some old pick that someone had put a Lancia grill on.

I have to say, I hate that there are pickups in the game. The only one that makes sense is the SSR, which desperately needs a gearbox. But I would love it if the Maloo and one (or more) of these REPUs were added.

Rotary engine in a truck? I know none of these little trucks were expected to carry/tow the heaviest of loads but, a high revving engine in a truck seems counterintuitive. Unless of course, like the GMC Syclone, the only thing this truck was meant to haul is ass.

Actually, the REPU had more power, torque, and hauling capacity than its 4 cylinder competitors of the time but ultimately fuel mileage killed it. The truck was revolutionary enough to warrant a Road and Track article....but it was eventually forgotten during the gas crisis of the late 70's. Mazda switched from the 13b to the 12a engine for a number of years to improve mileage but eventually went back to the 13b.

It's a really good book on rotary....you might also like Street turbocharging from the same author.

I have some pdf books on rotary if you are interested....

Thanks, I'll take a look. For everyone else, try searching YouTube for 13b bridge port to hear some seriously sweet engine sounds (Gt5 definitely got the Wankel right on the Gt300 RX-7)

I had a Chevy Luv years ago. 1.8 liters of shear POWER !!! That little truck just kept going and going and going... well once I was able to keep the carb from vibrating apart. Super glue works wonderfully as a threadlocker.

There are still a bunch of those mid 70's mini trucks running around in CA. There was a blue REPU a couple blocks from the last place I lived in CA.

Well that blue one appeared to be all original with slot mags. It was always parked on the street and in that locale there was a law against leaving a car on the street for more than 72 hours, so it must have been in running condition.

It's also common to find them with a Toyota 4-cyl swap. Owners would do that after the original apex seals wore out. Rotaries only last 100k tops before needing a rebuild.

'75 Mini Truck specs...

Mazda REPU 110hp /117tq
Datsun 620 105hp / 102tq
Toyota Helix 96hp / 120tq
Ford Courier 74hp / 92tq

The REPU achieved its values at much higher rpms due to the inherent characteristics of the rotary engine...but it also revved smoother than it's 4-cylinder competitors.

I was running races with the VCRC last night. Tonight Garris is hosting his series.

I've been itching to do some ice racing. Anyone want to do a 450pp FF ice racing night?

I was also looking at the 80's rally cars trying to see if they could be equalized for an ice racing competition...possibly with tuning disabled. It's hard to tell based on the numbers though. I'll have to run some laps in the ones I have.

Are you not doing Garris' series tonight?

Yes, tonight is Z34 using adjusting PP to try and balance the racing.

As to FFs on ice, I would just spin out a lot. I'm sure.

I have been playing with cars at different PPs. I have a couple 350s, 400s, 450s, and 500s (event a couple of 575s and a 600 that is crazy). The GTs from before were very close to 550, and if we wanted to do the GTs again, I think I would do 550 PP and 1680 Kg, instead of 602 HP and 1680 Kg.

My point is, I'd like to try some regular 450 nights at different PPs. I really like some of the 500s (the 3400S and the GT-R). And if the whole field was slowed down (say 400 PP), I might be able to keep up better.

Probably not, actually.

Still, might be fun.

Not tonight, but maybe later this week. I'll join Garris for a bit but depending on how it goes I may duck out to run some cars.

It's tough to spin out in a FF. Usually you just lose front grip and slide into a snow bank.

I've kind of lost interest in tuning tons of cars for various pp levels. The PP system breaks down when you venture further from 450 in either direction and you need to pay closer attention to the car you pick instead of how you tune the car you're driving. When I venture into the 500-525 rooms they are always dominated by the same cars and half the drivers can't even stay on the track. Above 525, you really need aero and that breaks the pp balance even more.

I don't mind racing at those levels, but I'd rather do it in untuned cars to make it a driver's battle.

Well, I can't tune, so all I do is put on just enough parts to get the PP with a few percentage points of limiting. I don't do any more than weight reduction 1.

Some of the cars are just a blast to drive. But yeah, I'm probably slow.

p.s. I just had a thought. I like the idea of the shuffle rooms, I just hate that the cars are so terribly limited and that there is several complete dogs in there. It would be nice if there were either lots and lots of cars in there, or if we had the ability when setting up the room to pick the cars that would be in the shuffle.

I don't know, shuffle levels under 500 are pretty good. I can usually manage a top 3 finish in any car as long as I don't get taken out in the first lap. Unfortunately, a lot of the shuffle hosts don't know what they're doing and they jump around too much and pick tracks that don't promote fair racing.

Think I'm going to play with some hot hatches on chamonix tonight. Join me if you're interested.

Fun racing last night. It's very hard to pass when you're racing through a white blizzard of back wash...but I think everyone, myself included, made enough mistakes that you could just wait someone out. My favorite is the first track we ran a few times (Chamonix Mini). It's a true ice racing arena and it offers tons of action as everyone will screw up that hairpin turn at least once.

I think last night was the first race I've won in this group. I have to say it might have turned out differently if you weren't driving through a blizzard the last 2 laps.
