Race Report
Qualifying:
Qualifying was particularly dangerous this week given the rain and Albert Park's propensity for big accidents which are especially easy to make if you are a bit too eager on the exits of any of turns 4, 7, 10 or 13. The lap times amongst the leaders began in the 1:31's and came down dramatically as the rain eased off a little. For myself, I initially used a compromised set up for the unknown conditions and fuelled up for 3 flying laps. The first two were really banker laps but I ran out of room ahead on track at the start of my third so this became my in-lap. Going out again for the final run I opted for a more oversteery set up as the track was improving and even though the lap times came down, so were everyone else's and the battle for pole position looked really nip and tuck. Thankfully, I hooked up a good lap of 1:26 on my final run without any mistakes which was enough for pole.
Race:
Because of wet qualifying, all the drivers had the opportunity to run different race strategies. Since I had pole position and hopefully clean air, I decided to start on the primes - which also gave me insurance if I was getting held up by anyone on soft tyres that I could run in clean air once they'd pitted. I also knew i'd have to turn my engine down in the final third of the race so having the options on at this stage would hopefully negate this disadvantage. Most of the guys behind me seemed to go for the regular strategy of a short first stint on the options which worried me greatly as I knew i'd be at a pace disadvantage in this first phase of the race. What also worried me was the possibility of having a puncture in the middle of the race on the primes - it's probably not as disastrous if this happens near the end of the race because hopefully at that stage you've built up a lead over a lot of the guys behind.
Come the race start
DOUQA lined up beside me in 2nd and seemed to make a better start, possibly having better traction out of those soft tyres. I should have moved right to cover him but instead opted to brake late on the outside and try to carry better speed through turns 1/2 so that I didn't get nailed in turn 3, but I clearly braked too late and ran wide onto the grass so Douqa had track position already on the run down to turn three. I let him go and decided to try and play the long game. For the next few laps I stalked Douqa with
DarkPSI following close behind me after he jumped
Baumi27 at the start. The 3 of us were covered by about 1.5-2 secs during this spell though it has to be said that it felt like DarkPSI was closer to me than I was to Douqa. My hope was to ride out this period where they had the initial grip advantage until their soft tyres started losing performance and mine came into their own. Dark seemed to be gaining on me heavily through turns 11/12 as my primes were just refusing to bite into the tarmac through this high-speed section.
I started to close up a little more on Douqa when disaster struck for him and he dropped it under braking for turn 3 so I took the lead with Dark close behind. Dark was holding on closely and was very hard to shake off which made that whole first stint feel a bit jittery. Had a couple of hairy moments when the Lotus of
Shark33 spun on the exit of turn 3 which distracted me and I had a big oversteer moment, allowing Dark to close up again just as I had been eking out a lead. Also going through the final two corners there was contact between the back-markers of
Upuaut and
Manios22DC who both spun here though luckily were both quite easy to avoid and Dark behind me was held up possibly a bit more than I was.
By the time Dark pitted on lap 10 I had about 3 seconds over him but felt relief as I now started to stretch my legs as the lap times came down into the 1:26's. Luckily during this phase I didn't have any real issues with traffic. My tyres were starting to lose performance by about lap 17/18 under braking and I pitted on lap 19 and turned the engine down. I came out of the pits around 4.5 secs ahead of Dark who remained in 2nd but I had a big boost in pace and was able to go over a sec a lap faster on the fresh options despite the engine being turned down. I was able to build up the lead to around 8 seconds fairly quickly but it wasn't to be all plain sailing. It started to rain around lap 23 which could possibly have thrown a cat amongst the pigeons, though thankfully for me it was never heavy enough to have to switch to wet tyres.
I had a real heart in mouth moment with a few laps to go when coming up to lap
tombrooks97, he didn't seem to realise I was close behind him and I had to really do a proper overtaking manoeuvre on him through turn 8. He then locked his brakes into turn 9 and punted me off track into the gravel though thankfully I kept the car facing in the right direction and was able to carry some forward momentum. This reduced my advantage over Dark to just 5 seconds and fuel became critical in the final 3 laps and I actually ran out on the final lap at turn 14 and finishing just 3 ahead which was a bit close for comfort but relieving none-the-less.
All in all an extremely tense hour's racing which felt much more like a real F1 race than Bahrain did - they were both brilliant in their own ways.
I don't really know what happened to Douqa, I remember lapping him when he seemed to just drive straight into the gravel at turn 3 to get out of my way almost as if he wasn't even trying to make the corner at all. He then left the race, the chat lobby and then logged off. I'd really appreciate it in future if people leaving could at least say something, even if only briefly to say what had happened. I know this isn't always possible but it would save me worrying whether or not they got disconnected or just decided to leave.
Manios totalled his car unfortunately so can't be included in the points. Shark33 seemed to give up half way through the race for some reason and carried on only as a spectator.
Unfortunately it looks like
DonkeyFuzz may possibly have to pull out of the championship so i'm afraid we won't have any fancy points tables to use if this is the case. Here are the standings currently in any case:
