Am I the only person who hates the rallying?

*laughing* well I'm a little bit north of you Ving, so i can't say I've seen that particular event... sounds fun though! :)

Mind you having said that, I'm not too sure PD had that event in mind when they did some of the street racing type rallying... as they tend to throw rally cars at you, once you get past easy... rather than a mix of normal road cars, say.

Really, they should have kept those races in, but ditched the pretty pointless rally connection... and the 5 second penalities! *grins* It'd been much more fun taking on say a Mazda 787B or LM race car of some kind on Citta, (minus penalties!) instead of some rally car or other... which oddly enough they did do with tsukuba wet, but then messed up, by refusing to equip your car with rain tyres!

rally cars are really just road racecars with dirt tires AFAIC. theres little difference. admittedly there is the 4wd factor tho but some road racecars are 4wd anyhow.

Why do you think rally cars in real life don't drive with 2 on the same track? They race time trials. With rallying you don't drive clean lines, so that means you're only able to pass opponents on the straights, which is nearly impossible when up against the fastest rally cars. It's ridiculous the way it's implemented in this game, if you can't do it right then just don't do it. Don't put rally races in my gran turismo god damnit!!!

Remember GT2 (3? I don't remember.) and how it used ghost cars for the opponent? They should have stuck with that.

Yeah, that's how it was in GT2. I picked up that game again about a month before GT4 came out. Even then I didn't like rally races, but now they're even worse. I simply can't avoid crashing into my opponent in harder races. I can't even keep up with slower cars on some courses.

You should've put a poll on this thread.

I'm a WRC fan, but I could do without it in GT. I found the rally races to be easy to win and tedious.

I don't mind the dirt, but I hate the snow. I just don't get it. I don't know how to feather my DS controller, I guess. Must be too heavy-thumbed. I'm stuck on normal at Ice Arena but I haven't tried many cars or gearing adjustments. On my dirt rallies I have the car almost always going sideways with full power on, but snow just doesn't seem to work that way. Yes the AI guy seems to travel on rails, but he also does that on dirt which is so annoying to look at and unnatural. I'm going to have to try automatic transmission or something to get through the final snow stages. Crap. The Formula races are a breeze and snow is so difficult. Why is that?

I especially hate snow rally...for example my ford rs 200 with about 500 hp cant beat lancer evo 3. Is it normal??? I try to drive (on snow) with grip (almost impossible and with no result) or I try to drive my car with drift (no result too). On gravel I drift like king and no car catch me. But on snow rally...it doesnt work. I havent done hard and normal snow rally yet :nervous: . If I want to play rally I choose WRC or Rychard Burns Rally for example. PD should put damage in the game instead of "rally".

P.S.: Sorry for poor English

LOL. You all whiners learn how to drive and stop complaining that rallying is crap.
👍
GT4 rally realism is a crap -> wrong
I cannot drive GT4 rally cars. Because of that GT4 rally realism is a crap -> that is a CRAP.

do practice but not crap!

buddy, there is an easy way to do the ice arena, dont spend extra money. If you just want to beat the rally and get over with it, I have 1word for you: WALLRIDE. remember you do not get penilty if your rear hit the wall. So when comes to turn, turn alittle bit and follow the outside of the wall, i promise you it will be a easy race. Any decend rally cars will do the job and you can even install NOS to secure the victory.

LOL. You all whiners learn how to drive and stop complaining that rallying is crap.

The physics are extremely close to real life. Do you really think that driving fast a 300 BHP car on gravel or ice is easy? (not to mention a +600 BHP one) It requires a lot of skill.

I did all the races in the special conditions hall with stock cars (only tuning was to turn off the TCS & ASM):

Easy- Lancer Evo III
Normal- Impreza STI Prodrive Style
Hard- Impreza Rally Car '02

It is not about power, it is about skill.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I play GT4 with the DFP.

You at least partially missed the point. For me, it`s not all about the crap handling. It`s not all about the goofy-ass 5 second penalty. It`s not all about the piss poor AI. It`s all about rally racing sucks, period.

Snow problem? No grip? I think that is the major problem causing "GT rally is a crap" phrase. Better we check what real racers think about Snow Problem :)

Rally Driving: the Basics. Andrew Comrie-Picard, Rally Sport Ontario

SLIDING FRICTION: The thing that sets rallying apart from most other types of driving is that we are racing under conditions of dynamic (sliding) friction instead of static (gripping) friction. This means that the fast way to drive on a slippery gravel or snowy road is very different than on a sticky race track, or even on the street. For example, if you stand on the brakes on a gravel road or on asphalt, a lot of the car’s weight will transfer to the front wheels and all four wheels may lock up. On asphalt with gripping friction, the best technique is to brake as hard as possible while not locking up the wheels, using the tire within its (static) friction circle and maintaining directional control. But on gravel the static friction circle is very small (there’s not much traction) and threshold braking in a straight line is not very effective. On gravel, it is much more effective to throw the car sideways, use the sidewalls of the tires as one part of the braking force, and feather the brakes for the other part of the braking force – then you’re using the tires in two directions simultaneously, and you’re misaligning the rear wheels from the fronts as you slide so that they get more bite on a fresh surface too. So we don’t just slide around to look cool – sliding is, among other things, an effective traction tool under conditions of dynamic friction.
Of course You have no grip at snow surfaces - have to use SLIDING FRICTION :)
So start learning more effective technique to throw the car sideways.

Thing is, it's not just about being any good at the rallying... as I said, I've completed the rallying on all levels, no cheats, won the escudo dirt trial car etc... it's about how much fun it is to play. And... it isn't. I feel it's very poor in comparison to the circuit racing aspect of GT which is done very well... as for power and handling... well in GT3, I used to chuck my 1881BHP Escudo round Laguna Seca for fun... and that's the highest powered and worst handling car in that game on one of the toughest circuit tracks. Guess that blows THAT philosophy out of the water then... ;)

I stand my my opinion that the rallying is a total farce in GT4... unrealistic handling AI, 5 second penalties for THEIR bad driving when they hit me (including at the start of one rally where a impreza quite deliberately steered INTO me!) NO penalties for them if they drive badly... (which just adds insult to injury) most of the cars handle the same way (badly) and have little or no difference in power so they're all the same old-same all... and as for braking and throwing it round corners... yeah, right. I attempt to do that, the AI car zooms past me, because he corners on rails!

It's a joke. I seriously would hope they scrap the rallying and replace it with another kind of road racing... seems to me, they're heading that way, as they called this one "special conditions" rather than rallying... and there were more circuit based races... I can only hope in GT5 it's ALL circuit based - and they fix the AI and lose the silly penalties (which don't work on the circuits, because I just drive something fast enough to allow me to stay miles ahead, flawless driving AI or not... and on the rally tracks I just go into every corner rear end first!)

Oh yes and whilst we're at it, get rid of the shaking screen when you hit something on inside car view please - I just switched to the roof view, and carried on driving as normal!

You are talking about AI fixed race line - computer cars cannot see You. That is a major GT AI problem and it persist on ALL GT tracks not Rally only. The problem is with GT AI at all. I hope GT5 will give as improved AI and more rally tracks and competitions. I love to drive cars not to destruct them so I don't need destruction physics. And You? Wanna drive or make destruction derby?

That silly penalties are GT AI problem but not GT Rally driving problem.

i find it fun, maybe thats cause i suck.. but my nickname for chamonix = shame on ice .. heh.. that is all. edit: i also found a way around the 5s pentalties.. go backwards.. lol, at least on mine, it doesn't restrict the rpms..

I hate it when I get rear-ended by the AI moron and I get a penalty. I want to scream.

Isn't the Escudo going to be the replacement for the M1A2 Abrams tank?

--------------------------

Mag I know the AI is far from flawless in normal racing also, but in that style of race 1. there are no 5 second penalties they inflict on you for THEIR bad driving (and I say again, I've even been rammed virtually at the startline in one race... driving line, neither of us had time to FIND a driving line!) and 2. In normal racing it's fairly easy to avoid most AI cars, by braking sharply and/or accelerating hard and driving around them... not so in rallying where your car sails sideways into a wall if you try avoiding contact using these tactics... and even worse, on some tracks the width of the track is barely wide enough for two cars to pass anyway!

I thought the rallying was bad in 3 (which I also did on every level of difficulty) but 4 is just beyond a joke!

Yeah, GT4 isn't that fun. The Rally Racing is proof of how bad it is. I just hope they get their act together for GT5.

You only get the penalty in the Driving Missions (ok, I can deal) and the rallying. That's the problem.

Having the deadly combination of a blind AI, the need to be all over the track and/or dealing with VERY narrow tracks in rally racing is a recipe for broken controllers. 🤬 :grumpy:

Of course, sometimes it's so incredibly bad I can laugh... Swiss Alps Reverse, get a car with the same acceleration off the line as the opposition and just go straight. The CPU will nail you everytime.

"Rallying" (since we all know it's not actually Rally racing - Special Condition is a decent name change) is a mixed bag IMO.

Really like the Tarmac courses, escpecially Citta and Costa. Penalties, OTOH, SUCK!

I actually have a have great deal of fun on the dirt courses (the Alps with its WIDE open track = powerslide city :sly: and the HUGE jump at Cathedral II Reverse 👍 )... except one... the GRAND frickin' CANYON! GAHHH... For the graphical showpiece of the game, they sure put together a disgustingly nasty track. There's just too much going on. Too twisty.

Chamonix's ok.

Whistler? Oh yea... 🤬 that stupid course! The only good thing is that it's short. I have more fun at the dentist.

Bit of advice... not only will you not incur the penalty if you hit the wall with your backside, the same is true if you hit your opponent with your rear. You won't get a penalty if they rear end you. :D

So there's some advantage to using a big car (I used the Honda Element and occasionally the Odyssey for the Beginner and Normal)

drop the ice and dirt track and add more tarmac stages. Nothing for satisfying than the tight twisty turns of the mediteranean towns.

especially when you are doing 140mph downhill it citta in the F1 car, now thats fun ;)

I hated the rallying in gt for a long long time. Then I devoted the mind numbing, soul crushing amount of energy and frustration to get the lines down so i can run excellent times. I've loved the rally racing just as much as the road racing ever since then. I was looking forward more to the rallying in gt4 almost more than the road racing. Both are alot of fun once you learn control and proper techniques. As for realism, I couldnt really comment on that as I havnt driven a rally car in real life, and im a little curious how so many of you are so sure the realism of rallying is so far off?

I wish i could get a copy of richard burns but unfortunately my pc would probably explode. Whats the biggest difference in the handling of richard burns and gt4 rallying(for those with both games)?

I can only guess that Richard Burns simulates some kind of grip when you are going sideways. Cos for sure, GT4 doesn't.

You won't hear me complainin' about the rallying. Yes, I know it's more difficult as it was in GT3, but why should that be a bad thing?
Practice, practice, practice... That's all there is to it. 👍

Also, there's nobody who's forcing you to do the rally stages. If you don't like them, well just don't do them.

Who cares about getting 100%? I surely don't. It's just a bunch of silly numbers on your television screen. To me, it's about the "driving" itself.

For the record: I really enjoy rallying in GT4 :)

All dudes rumbling in this thread... are rumbling about GT AI!
AI-> blind race line(from start to end of a race!) An AI car does see only other AI cars.
AI-> penalties - of course. GT physics is OK - AI does mess.

Rally is OK. Just drive like Dust&Snow GT Beast and try to cheat that crazy AI. That is very good challenge I think

But first of all go to new GT5 forum and start  for AI fix and stop :banghead:. It is bad for driving skills...

So... GT online is coming(soon I hope)... be prepared for real battles... with OLR rules - no penalties, no GT rally rumbling :dopey: If You become good enough to avoid that crazy AI manoeuvres... sure You will do big mess in online battles and win 💡

Finally people who think like me. Rallying is big bull**** in this game. I just wish they will pull it out in GT5. It's so boring to catch a penalty because the damn AI cars cuts you off. Also, in real life, no rally event consists of going side to side with your opponent, it's too goddamn dangerous. The ghost system in GT2 was better IMO.

I'm not very keen on the rallies either, though it adds to the longetivity of the game. But compared to other rallye games, its not on the same level (except graphics). I very very rarely go and race a rallye track and woud have preferred additional race tracks (e.g. Spa, Silverstone, etc) than the rallye tracks

I completed the rallies but I seriously doubt I'll revisit them. The hard run on Gran Canyon was painful. I had to blast ahead at the start, taking a penalty of course, and hold him off on the final turn of the last straight.(Was actually bumped out on this curve once and lost at the finish on an earlier run.) I like the Italian course and will do timed rallies w/friends but that's about it. DD

I know the AI problem sucks, but I gotta say when people have the problem of no sideways grip, you're probably being crazy with the throttle. I noticed a while ago that I was constantly flooring it during the turns, and there's no way I'd do that drifting in my Supra. So just moderate the throttle till she's sliding pretty shallow, grip, and off you go.

I find the invisible walls to be a major pain in my butt in rally races. I try to use the whole track to get some nice lines, and often thinks the track is a little wider than it is. I hit the wall and get my line messed up. Pisses me of.

There is just to many of these small faults. Calling it special conditions was probarly a good idea, because what we do in this game is not rally. Rally is a long point to point race, where the only thing you know about the next corner in front of you is what the co-driver is telling you as you blast through the woods at 150km/h+. I strongly recommend everybody to try Richard Burns Rally. It`s just a awsome rally game.

You may accept special conditions for what it is. But it still sucks in my opinion.

Madd Dog
Fair enough, I realise That it is a case of learning how to drive, I was only stating how hard it was to do. If only I had some spare cash to rent a rally car. :sly:

It actually wasn't that expensive. It was $650 for the day and well worth it!

Praise the Lord!!!!! Someone said it!!!! Rallying is a CHORE!!!! Wake up PD, this is Gran Turismo. If I want to rally, I'll buy a rallying game. Too bad no one at PD is listening to the fans who actually buy the game. Don't even get me started on the Mission Hall events!!!

Mission Hall is not hard! The first thing I do whenever I get a GT game is get my licences. Then I saw Mission Hall .Not sure what it was I went into it.I beat mission 1 - 26 in one sitting. The next day I did 27 - 33.After that I did 34 it was hard but fun.
