Am I the only person who hates the rallying?

i drove the escudo twice and then sold it. Just too twitchy!

Im not a fan of the rallying, i prefer normal racing.

I loved rally in GT3, but its just sooo hard to corner in GT4. I remember drifting through the corners in GT3 so easily. And in GT4 the penalties are so stupid. One thing I learned is if I know I'm going to miss a corner and I know I have a big lead, I just hit the hand brake and do a 180 spin and hit with the back of my car. You don't get a penalty if the back is hit.:sly:

I actually enjoyed rally in GT3, but absolutely hated it in GT4...I'm not finishing the Hard races in the SC Hall and you know what? I don't really mind not getting 100% for the first time...

maybe they could still add the rally races but improve them alot more... Point To Point rally racing!!!!

IDK if someone said this already, but if they bring PTP rallying in, they need to put Pikes Peak back in, along with the 2 Pikes Peak Suzukis(keep the Escudo, and bring back the Cultus)

I know what you mean, in GT3 rallying was very fun, but not so much in GT4. Maybe because of the 5 second penalties, but it just feels more frustrating then anything.

the cars handle too badly in GT4 in comparison to real life, for those of us that like watching wrc, you can see you the cars can actually go round the corners without having the tail step out. I would love to see PTP rallying in GT5 aswell as the cultus, throw the escudo away, its only good for breaking lap records and then you cant beat it so theres no point trying!

Oddly enough, I adore the rallying sections in both GT3/4 and have repeatedly returned to them after stints on the likes of Colin McRae Rally 2005 and V-Rally 3. Maybe such "flaws" actually mean something more positive to me due to finding those two said games a touch too accessible. :\ Ah well.

even i'm the real rally driver still the rally physics in GT4 need more improvements...its because the way of the car reacts was to slow...the steering wasn't sensitive enough...and doing scandavian-flick looks like just cruising around...no real rally adrenaline...soul-less compared to other rally games...

*other than that, GT is top notch...

-don't forget to bring back the cultus PP special+Celica GT4 PP special+Tacoma PP special+Audi PP special and other Pikes Peak Special Cars....

Always been a problem in GT I think. The sense of speed, or lack there off, is a let down sometimes.

The rallying definately sucks
Especially because of the stupid 5 second penalty thing
i end up with one of those every like 2 corners because of the cr@p handling
if i want rallying i would play Colin McRally 2005
get it sorted PD

Actually, just today I was on the Chamonix (sp?) 'Hard' event, using the Toyota RSC Rally Car. I can understand the point about the penalties a tad more now. It seemed like the only place where I could steam past the Impreza was that final tarmac section but actually, I managed to gently and unexpectedly bump past him somewhere else.

i hated playing gt4 rally races in easy, where i had to do only 2 laps. i dont want to imagine what it must be to do 5 laps, its horriblee

Heh. Because of this thread I dived into the rallying and got that Super Rally Evo, and I've actually been having a great time. The thing is that even cheating is a kind of kinesthetic fun- in order to do tailslides around all the corners and hit with the rear of the car for no penalty, it's much the same as powersliding around all the corners in one big drifty thing, just much faster.

It's fun obliterating all the AI cars, but it's even more fun going everywhere absolutely sideways at WOT :)

In fact in some ways it's even MORE fun than the proper driving, because it's so crazy, and to really push it to the limit you've got to use exactly the same tools you use for if you were rallying properly- just more so. You set up the switchbacks to bounce the rear of the car off the wall by flinging it sideways well ahead of the turn and then flooring it, and sometimes you don't even hit the wall, you just blast screaming through the turn facing so sideways that you can't see any of the road, just the apex of the turn. Or, you do the same thing but a bit early, and find yourself roaring through the turn completely sideways while gently nudging the apex with your front bumper.

Something with 4WD is pretty crucial- FWD in a pinch- you have to be able to turn the car somewhat when it's sliding completely sideways. You only need a certain amount of power, my Super Rally Evo is totally unmodified, no extra turbos or anything as that is missing the point. And with a DFP it's a workout whipping the wheel around though 900 degrees is perfectly adequate- my arms never cross unless I'm about to screw everything up, and ideally it's all using the momentum of the car to initiate turns and then having all the wheels clawing basically forward with small steering inputs adjusting the car's rotation.

Guys, you're crazy (or are doing it wrong) if it's not being fun. If you're hitting a lot of walls head on and getting penalties, you're doing it wrong. You should be hitting the walls backwards or sideways, and you can do a surprising amount of full throttle madness if you're okay with the idea that your car is like the spaceship in 'Asteroids' and the full throttle might well be applied while you're going mostly backwards to kinda slow down... none of the normal driving rules apply. Drive like a raving maniac and try not to point forwards ever :)

yup...totally agree with jinxtigtr.....that's the real way to turn rally in the GT4 into fun play.....

p/s: but now i just prefer to practice maximizing power slide without touching the barrier...

I too hate rallying because all the rally cars handling sucks. The only track I like is the Capri Rally track which isn't even a rally track.

I actually like the rallying. GT3 is another story. Smokey Mountain in a WRC Car, I'm flat out except for one turn.

All these people who say the handling sucks... how so? Your only experience of virtual rallying must be on some arcade game, where you can go round corners flatout.

Dirt driving in GT4 is an art. Just like on the circuits. The only reason you think that cars can only go round corners at "12mph" is that you're just not driving correctly. Dirt driving is so different from the road racing, and that's why I love it. It requires a whole different technique.

In a 4WD - I rarely drive anything else offroad - I get it totally sideways, and the 4WD keeps me in the corner, totally sideways, at very high speed. I'm sorry, but you're just not trying.

Dirt/snow driving is a whole different thing. Look at Ken Block's Gymkhana 2 movie - THAT is how you need to learn to corner.

EDIT:

See?

Actually, it was described absolutely perfectly just up there. It is EXACTLY like Asteroids. Dirt driving is a skill. If you don't like it, don't do it, simple.

Awesome insight there, EJ Rocky...+Rep ^

Yea I love it when people say "rallying sucks" or whatever, and they totally miss the point that there's a whole different set of techniques involved.

I'd recommend getting a steering wheel of some sort. I despised rallying until I finally get some proper feedback from the car which allowed me to understand what I ought not to do whist driving on treacherous terrain. I STILL DISLIKE ice racing! Insurmountable!!!

All of you who are complaining should stop because they are called "special conditions" for that very reason. When I drive my kart in the rain I have to take some corners at half speed or less if I don't want to fly off the track. You should go slower into the corners and steer with the rear, and so what if there is a penalty? It will help you become a better driver if you learn to maneuver around a slower car in low grip conditions.

I can understand a lot of people don't quite grok rallying in GT4 because it requires learning a different technique. But, GT4 isn't quite the perfect representation of rallying either.

For one thing, the low-speed handling is definitely off. Not by a huge amount, but off nevertheless. The car slides too much in 20 mph hairpins, especially on dirt (feels like you're driving on ice in gravel corners, where there is none).

On fast corners, it's better. But since a lot of rally tracks in GT4 are narrow and full of slow bits, the less-than-perfect rally physics start to outweigh the better bits of coding rather soon.

Secondly, I can imagine the track design doesn't help either. If PD had designed tracks like Ice Arena a lot wider, you'd have less complaints about rallying being a drag and needing 'newbie loser' tricks like wallriding a lot to even win the missions/races.

Which brings me to the third less-than-optimal aspect of GT4 rallying: the AI. It's well-known it's darn dumb in this game anyway (being punted to a 5 sec penalty would be the prime example where rally missions are concerned). But in GT4 rallying, it also has its faults speedwise. I noticed several corners in for example Grand Canyon which the AI takes *way* faster than your car ever will, even when you're using a top car like the 1,2million Evo Rally Car. (Of course, I'm talking about driving with all driving aids off - anything else is for noobs who will let the computer take their corners for them.) It's not all bad, but it's definitely unbalanced in a lot of places - and it feels like the AI is being allowed to cheat, bigtime.

In all, rallying is less well-developed than other types of racing in GT4. It can be fun, but its faults prevent it from being really good.

I LOVE dirt driving! its awesome, and my favourite car is the Lancia Delta S4, c'mon . . . a RALLY car with 500bhp+? haha insane! 👍
Like other have said, dirt driving takes real skill, anyone can just drive round a circuit. i dont really like the ice racing though, can anyone suggest a good car to drive on ice tracks with? maybe i just need more practice . . . hmmm :sly:

in arcade mode, if you glitch it and get a car in there that normally cant, its really fun.

The 63 corvette race car is a great drifter on dirt tyres, lol

Yeah, Chamonix Hard is hell for me

They're all hell for me :ill: i just end up spinning, ive done all of the dirt events but cant seem to do the ice ones :grumpy:
ive found awell that my driving on tracks has increased, epecially in unpredictable cars, now that i have completed all the dirt events. it might jut be me im not sure, ha anyone else found this? :)
