Andy Tudor: Gran Turismo and Forza Are Playing Catch Up With Project CARS 2

I mostly agree with his arrogant remarks but there's one thing that will ultimately decide how the game turns out - how the driving experience feels. If they nail it, pCars2 will pretty much be the best sim ever, clearly better than GTS and FM7

I enjoyed driving in Project Cars 2 when it was working. I think SMS would also have to include consistent QC in order to take the "clearly better" title. At the moment I think we're stll at the "horses for courses" stage where PCars 2 looks the best of the three on paper, GT Sport looks best in screenshots and FM7 makes the most favourable impression on games journalists.

Having confidence and beating your rivals at Top Trumps is good (resolution, VR, etc), but having a solid package is more relevant for most consumers. In my case, physics, cars and tracks available, since 12K and VR is way beyond my need$

I prefer polish in key areas over extensive list of... anything. In this regard, Slightly Mad Studios is years behind any competition.

I can't imagine to hear something like that from Kaz. That's the difference between humility and arrogance. Mr. Tudor can make a handshake with Mr. Greenawalt.

It's pretty crazy the amount of comments here saying they are being arrogant. What happen to the idea of being confident in your ability and your product? I guess that's modern times for you. If you speak your mind you're criticized versus just telling people what they want to hear.

With all due respect I think you're misreading my previous post.

I did read the article, which is how I know that the title is misleading with respect to its contents.
Fair enough, apologies if you feel mislead. 👍

#graphicsainteverything ;)

I understand many people have PS4s, but how many will use the PSVR feature? I'm in the minority with an XBONE, is it really a deal breaker?

Look, I'm a "PlayStation" console gamer and have been since the late nineties. VR for me is not that big of a deal and for a myriad of reasons, don't want to sit in a room with my ears and eyes covered, even if I'm spending all my time on the track.

Until the "VR" experience evolves to something less than essentially putting a blanket over my head and cotton balls in my ear for sound, it's nothing more than a novelty for me and the kids or when someone comes over to show it off. I'm a simple man - just give my my 65" 4K Bravia, crank up the sound and let the fun be had.

I don't disagree with him, but I would've touted the physics being ahead of the competition given the brands/people they've brought in to dial in their real world products.

SMS are some of the most arrogant cockwomble devs to ever dev, and for the most part they really aren't deserving of such attitude

and raceroom racing experience's sounds

I loved what SMS did with PC1. It filled a void for me after spending gobs of time on GT6. The game was not flawless and still has some annoying as hell glitches, but still, to have a full fledged racer on the PS4 was highly welcomed and I very much thank SMS and look forward to PC2.

With that said, the arrogance I'm hearing right now reminds me of something else I hear from a certain geriatric platinum blonde in the States, that also behaves as if those that came before them are inconsequential and somehow "less than", and that others have to catch up to be on their level. This is poppycock of course and I fully discount it. Sure, SMS have produced a cracking game with many things to laud, but to treat its tried and true predecessors (namely PD/GT) as just pedantic old farts in a lab trying to "catch up" sounds like a bit too much hubris before all of the chips are out on the table. This behaviour is not all that different than some poking fun and sneering at one particular title before its console racers stood on the podium at Le Mans and have since dotted numerous motorsport leaderboards. Let's also not forget that Forza/T10 in turn pushed PD to be better and step up their game in turn, making both titles better than before.

As eluded in the outset, I love SMS's tenacity and spirit when it comes to creating a great motorsport sim experience, but I truly believe, SMS would be better served in my opinion if they just make the game, and let us "drive the game" before they start self glossing, and stroking their own egos a bit too much. Those situations hardly ever end well. Besides, in the end we just don't know what all Kaz and co. have up their sleeve [in total] for this new iteration of the GT evolution over the coming months and years. Happy racing all.
:gtpflag:

Granturismo is playing catch up with everything just as Project cars is playing catch up with Assetto Corsa.
Keep improving, keep getting better, we're loving it.

I could not disagree more. Sure, GT is "evolving" - even Kaz stated to think of GTS as the next generation of GT games, but without GT we wouldn't even be here (GT planet). I think GT is playing catch up to itself (its own lofty goals, namely Kaz's) because it's never been in a real "race" with any other company.

We all know they [PD] move at a snail's pace because they are so freaking meticulous in certain aspects. I'm sure they draw inspiration and let other good ideas in other titles influence their decision making, but love them or hate them, PD moves to the beat of its own drum.

He did say 'in many respects' to be fair and those might be fully dynamic and positional weather, Livetrack, full day/night cycle (this time around handling for sure, you'll see)... We are also playing catchup with them in many respects. Now, back to being humble :)

Screw humble, crush the enemy!!!

I'm not sure I see any arrogance when someone qualifies their statement with the words, "in many respects", especially when the claims made are actually true, but whatever.

Can I have your WMD Forum ID please? I would like to have a conversation with you over there.

You do know that Kaz said a few years ago that the premiums from the PS3 era were future-proof right? It turned out not to be the case and yet he still has made the same comment about the models in Gran Turismo Sport. Arrogance and humility indeed.

Not sure if serious.

I actually think that the PS3 models were future proof... just for some odd reason they decided to scrap them. :(

Well, I was so excited with Pcars1 but was a huge letdown because of a) force feedback (using a g25) which kept going from bad to worse as the game progressed towards the final version and b) the AI that caused destruction derby when too many cars were crammed.

To be honest, visually wise, the best racer out there is still GT Sport - no matter what modern gfx techniques Pcars 2 uses. For the weather effects, Driveclub is still the king.. Concerning technologies, Pcars 1 was supposed to have the 'most advanced tire physics' but still felt like crap...

Well, I'm in a quandary. PCars2 looks and sounds like it's going to be at least as good as Gt Sport.

But, not only are my regular crew going to get Gt sport but also casual online mates too - and I think that that's the challenge for PCars2 at least on ps4 - it's social gamers that'll bump the numbers up for gt sport and for some of us drag in other players.

I'll get both, but Pcars2 will be waiting on a discount whilst I play online with my friends on gt sport even if it's the lesser game for me...

pCars is an awesome title (been part of the development since the WMD site first started) but to say that other titles are playing catch up is a bit...false. But I'm rating this one up to be a marketing hype generator more than anything, so it's not a big deal.

To say other games are playing catch up all depends on where you draw the starting line. SimBin's FIA GTR games had dynamic weather, awesome track selections, amazing physics, dynamic time of day, incredible graphics and sound design, officially licensed racing, realistic damage, accurate racing weekends, helmet cam w/ turn into apex view and I believe it was the first to have fully rendered car interiors; plus many, many more things that would suggest pCars is playing catchup to a game that was released in 2004. Granted, pCars runs on much better technology so it does a lot of those things better, but the GTR games were groundbreaking for their time, so the fact remains.

You also have to consider the audience of each title. To say you won the race between you and your friends on who can drive to the movie theater the fastest, despite the fact that your friends are stopping by the library first and then going to the movie theater and then claiming you won cause you're the fastest - is a bit thick headed, even though you'd be right. Forza Motorsport 4, for example, had a huge roster of cars - a number Forza Motorsport 7 is beating with over 700 cars on launch. pCars doesn't come anywhere close to that. Have you guys seen Gran Turismo Sport's photo mode? This website alone is a testament to how many people use that feature in games and GTS is gorgeous. Not to mention the eSports events and the "GT Academy" stuff that put gamers on the podium at Le Mans - an aspect of gaming GT did way before anybody else.

Each game has an identity and a goal to reach amongst its gamers. Gran Turismo crowns itself as a "Driving Simulator", not a racing simulator. Forza Motorsport runs with the ethos of "Where Dreams are Driven," which is ultimately true with its awesome car selection, tuning, upgrading system and the incredible and unprecedented livery system - not mentioning its open world cousin, Forza Horizon.

pCars is the spiritual successor of the original SimBin titles. With GTR3 in the works (and hopefully with a release date within this decade) I believe that game will be the true competitor to pCars. This is a soccer player saying he's better at kicking balls than a basketball player. Forza and GT are not 'driving' down the same road as pCars, so I don't think it's a fair comparison - because those games do things pCars cannot match.

Very excited for this title and I hope their launch goes well!

Arrogance equals confidence. Look at any sport personality, celebrity or anywhere in life in general and there is arrogance in all of them. Whether it be Usain Bolt, Roger Federer, Rory McElroy, Steve Jobs etc. If they weren't arrogant, they wouldn't be at the top (or were)
I don't see the problem with Andy Tudor's comments. All power to him I say.

By the way Ian, really looking forward to that monster which is the XJ220 S TWR  Must have been quite difficult to get a hold of!

Entertaining thread and comments, but PCars will still be my main racing game and FM7 will be my car collecting fun game.
I'm trying to do the math here to figure out when you have the time.
roflmao.gif

For reference, Project CARS dropped May 8, 2015 for you...790 days. I'll let you do the math on how many hours per day you've played it...
And that's not counting any hours you may have played it while not logged in on Steam.

2.5 HOURS A DAY

Difference between Arrogance and Confidence:

Arrogance breeds superiority, while confidence makes others comfortable.
Arrogance may be a way to suppress feelings of insecurity for other areas of weakness.
A confident person takes into his stride both strengths and weaknesses.
Arrogance feels good by making others feel lesser.
Confidence is an attribute liked by others which fosters security and faith in each other

After watching all of his (and other SMS employee) interviews from E3 in which this exact statement was made, I never thought he sounded like a prig. If you take the quote on its own, separated from context, you could certainly infer arrogance. But no one with sense would do that.
