Slot 1 (and not top split!): My Free Practice pace gave me cause for concern, since I was at least half a second slower than most of the people on my friends list that I usually end up racing against, plus historically I've been pretty terrible at driving the SF in GT Sport, in spite of it being a high downforce car, which I'm usually rather quick with. My qualifying didn't get off to the best of starts due to me spinning at La Source like a noob on my very first hot lap. In the end, the best I could do was a 52.0, which was almost 1s slower than my best FP time. If I'd even managed to get within a tenth of my best FP time I'd have been starting on the front row. Instead, I was P8, which honestly wasn't that bad.

I made up a place at the start, and another one at Pouhon when the car in front spun, moving me up to 6th by the end of Lap 1. Another casualty at Pouhon on Lap 3 moved me up to 5th, which is where I remained for most of the rest of the race. I could see 4th ahead, but he was several seconds up the road. As we each cycled through our overtakes, the gap would increase and decrease as one of us ran out of boost while the other still had some left. With each cycle, the gap between us became smaller and smaller until Lap 7 when I was in the slipstream of 4th place headed into Eau Rouge. Right as I was poised for an overtake down Kemmel, the back of my car stepped out at Radillion. Somehow I managed to avoid completely losing it, but I went from being right behind 4th place to over 2s behind, with only 1 more lap left. Fortunately I still had a lot of boost left and somehow closed that gap again to be right behind him headed into Eau Rouge once again on the final lap. This time I made it through just fine, partially because I had to lift anyway because I'd caught him so quickly and had no where to go with it until we got to Kemmel. I passed 4th place down Kemmel using almost all of the rest of my boost, but couldn't gap him enough through Sector 2. Starting the final sector, I was now out of boost, but he had a full meter and used it to great effect in Sector 3, passing me just before we got to the chicane. Because he had to take a tighter line I got a better exit and squeaked back past him just before the finish to grab P4 once and for all. Looking back at the replay, he still had plenty of boost left, while mine hadn't refilled yet, but for some reason he chose not to use it on the run to the finish. Had he done so he would've easily held me off. 249 points is a decent start to the season. This was also the first time I took home 200 or more points from a Super Formula race.

How close it was between me and 5th place at the finish

Question. If I only participate in one competition, say Manufacturers Cup, does that still count? Or do I have to participate in the Nations too in order to win the whole competition?

I think they are rushing it, the game is no where near in a good state for online lobbies, penalties and car dynamics. I hope so but I don't believe the 26/05 update will solve these issues and create a stable online environment.

It boggles my mind that PD/Sony think the game is ready for such events, but I'll wait for the update.

the announcement actually gives me a bit of optimism, along those same lines.

either they've taken their lumps and quietly fixed issues surrounding BOP / actually racing... or they are going to be exposed to a new round of public criticism. i know 'they have already made their sales', etc, but for the actual individuals making the game... if they blow this there may be some changes.

that said, i would guess lobbies (again) took a back seat for this update. if their plan was to start the competition this month, they would likely have been prioritizing those elements.

Definitely interesting that the details for two of the Nations Cup rounds are unconfirmed. I bet one will involve a new course, and another will involve a new car.

I hate how PD feel the need to rush into this. They could’ve at least been gracious enough to give participants at least a week in advance to prepare. Announcing the series 1-2 days before it starts is just ridiculous. Not everyone eats, sleeps, and breaths GT and can drop everything they’re doing to start practicing.

And then there’s the well-known issues the game has with lobbies, BoP, physics, etc. Surely the update tomorrow will address these problems. Otherwise, I don’t see this competition running smoothly.

You race in GT2 and GT3 grouping and play to win.....nothing, by the looks of it.

Once again it seems to be aimed squarely at the top 0.1% and they don't care about incentives for anyone else to take part.
Yes, I won the first test season of the GT3 Nations Cup a couple of months ago and got nothing. Not a set of red pyjamas, no AI named after me, not even a gold plated Dualsense. PD always care for the top 0.1%

What are the others supposed to win?

What about those below DR A???
The more you race online the more you can increase your driver rating. Eventually, if your rating gets high enough, you can start a Cup Series in GT1.

Of course, you have to take into account all of the idiots driving in sport mode but there is always a chance to increase your rating.
Just remember, the group you are in when you start the season is the group you will be in until the end of the season even if you increase your rating along the way.

Bragging rights?
