Assetto corsa coming to PS4 and Xbox one

I was shocked to see how many butt hurt Gran Turismo players there are when many were abandoning GT6 for pCars 1 & Assetto Corsa.

I am one of those people. You have missed the whole point here. GT6 was released on a superseded console. All the PS4 owners had their nice new shiny consoles and we did not have a driving game at all for nearly the first year of release. Even Drive club (that was supposed to showcase how good the PS4 was) was withdrawn and completely redone.

So yes, by the time PCARS and AC came around PS players abandoned their obsolete consoles and flocked to games that they could run on their nice new PS4s that were gathering dust ;-)

I should add, further to this point, GT Sport is about to do the same. The PS5 is touted to be released at the end of next year so GTS is about to be released on a soon to be superseded console.

I was one as well months ago.
A quick look back though my old posts will say I could not stand Assetto.
Now, it is all I drive. Daily.

I really hope Kunos comes out with alot more content. Has there been any whispers or rumors of AC2?

Content is great, but a quick look at some of the games that are the best reveals content is secondary.

AC is as good as it is because they didn't go crazy for content, they went crazy for detail.
I truly hope they don't lose that approach if they (hopefully) make AC2.

I try to stay on top of the state of the console version of Assetto Corsa, well, at least the PS4 version since the XBox version got sidetracked with such an enormous delay in updating. Anyway, for as much as i try to keep up, I can never remember exactly where the PS4 version stands...but, I will say that I didn't know about the stuttering problems/screen tearing. I do remember hearing about a bit of that on console launch and even after an update or two, but I thought they took care of that.

One of the first updates for the console version addressed screen tearing. No idea if there's stil some tearing, but since then I haven't noticed anything affecting the experience one bit. As for FPS stuttering, it becomes a gameplay issue when there are more than 8-10 cars racing together. On some tracks it seems worse than others, but I drive solo most of the time with relatively stable frames well above 30 or 40 FPS (rough estimate). Stuttering during replays depend a lot on camera angles, and one single car is often enough to make it look really bad. The above applies to a standard PS4 system.

Don't quote me for this, but I've read some reports that AC keeps a stable 60 FPS in nearly every situation when running the PS4 Pro with Boost Mode enabled.

I dont suffer severe problems of stability with 16 cars. I played in a lot of tracks (Nurburgring, Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Silverstone classic, Monza classic...) and the only one that suffers from stabiliy it's Nordschleife (specially if there is a crash at the begining). But after a short time, you get reasonably good fps (40-50?). Im with a base PS4.

Digital foundry made a video after 1.03

Frame rate seems to be pretty good, although it's not 60 fps. Not by large. And X1 users have worse frame rate.

It's a good thing threads like these emerge on the forums. I was thinking of picking this up just yesterday but I think I'll steer clear for now!

No official whispers but a few comments here and there can lead us to believe there will be an AC2.

I do notice frame rate issues but very rarely and momentarily. I don't let it destroy my enjoyment like some others do.

What is it you are looking for in a racing game and what is it that puts you off from picking this up? Do you play with a wheel or pad. You never know, you could be missing out on something you might really love. The driving is exceptional and that is what AC is about. If Assetto Corsa was a Hollywood movie it would be the Godfather, rather than the fast and the furious ( explosions, fireworks etc).

on Xbox1, I have the updates except the new one, I never noticed stuttering or screen tearing.

Granted I have the xbox1s, so add a hdr and higher clock rate, I believe.

Well, I just want the experience to be smooth and seamless. I'm playing Forza and DR on Xbox One so anything less, I'm simply not used to. I hear the graphics almost look last-gen by some standards, but that isn't a concern really. I'm on a pad, but even then I'd choose good physics over visuals any day. How do the cars sound? As good as DR/Forza?

@CSLACR Is the Xbox One S really worth picking up just to get rid of stuttering and/or tearing in games? From what I understand, it has a slightly overclocked GPU. Does it also have a faster HDD, to your knowledge? I don't have an HDR TV however.

Well, I always thought Dirt Rally looked fantastic and super smooth, then after going back to it after playing AC I noticed how bad the screen tearing was, I never really noticed it before. AC had bad screen tearing on launch but its non existent now.

The graphics certainly are not last Gen, that shows you peoples priorities. It's like being dazzled by Pamela Anderson and saying Rachel Riley is a 5 ( she's really clever, hot too but no Hooters to throw you off ). The trees are 2.5D, the spectators certainly are last gen, that clearly wasn't a priority. The track surface and cars look great. The headlights certainty aren't super detailed. No rain or night time.

The sounds vary from average ( not many, but a few early Lotus) to amazing (Audi S1). They are as Good as DR imo, some say DR has the best sounds but for me, as good as they are, they are very similar and not much variety ( not surprising really as they're all rally cars). The sounds could be better though as they've had to disable reverb.

If physics are most important to you then it's certainly worth picking it up as they're are easily the best on console and if you can pick it up cheap, what do you have to lose? Just bear in mind using a pad won't be as easy as Forza and will need some tweaking and time to adapt. It does have some other flaws though like lack of polish, winning a race can be anti climatic etc. But the driving itself is bliss.

I will risk myself to do something you should never do (because this time I see almost an unanimous opinion) that is asume other people priorities and wishes: the bast mayority of users that are waiting for the next update desire the AI improvement more than other thing.

I can say that the current AI is very good. The more time I spend with it, the more I like it. So Im not agree with what the people are saying that the AI has improved from rubish to perfection. The current AI doesn't give up most of the time when you are fighting with them, is extremely fast in some cars (thanks to tricks like ABS, TC, ESP and more grip in some cars than what is real), they block the tyres sometimes, always reconize you... The biggest issue is that they are afraid of overtaking. With all the videos Ive seen of the new AI, probably solving that issue is the cause of such a noticeable improvement.

@lancia delta hf Assetto Corsa graphics are just like almost anything else on the game: not designed to be impressive but to be enjoyble. The 2d trees, the average lighting, the average textures are soon forgotten. And there are some qualities of the graphics I absolutely love: the clarity of the image it's insane. You can see a car almost in the other part of the track. The colors are very natural and pleasant.

Kunos have their issues (BIG ones), but that quality of making always decisions that in the long term will be better, is what make them so special. Example: not developing rain because they dont want to just make it with less grip. They want to make it good.

Indeed, it's a bit underwhelming.

Personally, it's not even the pack that I want, but the latest AI.
I'm Really looking forward to the R2R pack, especially the MC12 and the Lotus. But when I think of the next update I completely forget about the R2R and think off the AI.

Yes the AI are very fast, if you come straight from GT then there's nothing to complain about. Though with the new AI they just look more human now.

Agree, though I think the lighting is very good and as you say the clarity is sweet. As for seeing cars on the other part of the track. That's me top left by the stands on the start/finish straight.

I think you misunderstood what I meant. I was trying to say that I was shocked by seeing GT6 users expressing dismay, frustration and in many cases just straight up jealousy over the people who moved onto pCars. As you said, here we have the PS4 sitting around collecting dust waiting for a great racer to come along - of course, I'm sure millions were hoping a new GT7 would surface in 2015. With no word of a new version even on the horizon, pCars took a nice bite of GT6 users who were thrilled to be able to put their PS4's to work, finally. My astonishment was in looking at these people and think, "What? You really thought these people were going to stick around grinding out Seasonal Events when this bad ass looking game just hit the market?"

I used the wrong word. Instead of screen tearing, I meant to write "stuttering". I see Donnced refer to severe problems with Assetto Corsa stuttering, mostly when having 10+ cars on the track.

Nice. I must warn you that I shall be stealing this statement from you...very well put. 👍

Boy...I came across a video for the GTSport livery designer or car painter...whatever they're calling it. That looks pretty awesome! Unfortunately, I think the people talking about it in the video did a crappy job of actually showing wide varieties of different possibilities. Still, just seeing what buttons were on the screen let me know that this skin creator is going to be awesome for the GTSport player.

Alright but did you not read the entire post? I did answer your question about stuttering.

Yes. I did...and I thought it had been fixed with that update way back near the launch date, just as you and others said. But, Donnced is still claiming it exists to this day. So, I hear mixed things. I take all of you at your word. No one has any reason to lie to each other...so, I'm sure Donnced is still experiencing those stuttering problems. I'm very glad to hear that you are not (as well as many others who've posted in these forums).

Yes it's good to see PD finally add a feature the GT community have wanted for years and not half ass it. I agree that's it's a shame it hasn't been demonstrated to its full abilities.

Feel free to steal my quote lol.

The sounds in AC are top-notch, imo. The LaFerrari (dlc) is so godly you'll find yourself crashing because you didn't want to lift off the throttle.

The graphics are fine, I haven't seen anything that looked bad. It's not a brand new 4k game like GTS or FM7, but then nothing on console is until they release.

If you have an Xbox1, it depends on your budget.
As far as I know the only difference between the X1 and X1S is an HDR, overclocked GPU, and supports 4k blu ray. (And 2x sized HDD's)

If you have the budget, the X1X coming in November is the clear way to go.
If money is tighter, you could sell the vanilla Xbox1 and grab a X1S without spending too much.

I grabbed a 1TB with FH3 for $250 in February.
I had a PS3 before that, so I can't compare game performance between the 2 Xboxs, but everytime something loads Im happy I have that extra speed.

I have a PS3. The HDD in that thing died, which is hilarious because I probably used the console 1% as much as most gamers do. Anyway, I slapped an SSD in rather than spend money for a new HDD. I had the SSD sitting around collecting dust. Oh, it was so nice to see improved loading times. I can imagine with the size of PS4 and XBox One games that loading times can be a little bit of a wait, no? I've since pulled that SSD from the PS3 since i'll never use the console again and added it to my laptop as my 3rd SSD which is good for storage of mods and other crap.

I would guesstimate AC, FM5, FH3, and Pcars1 take about half the load time that GT6 did.

oh wow...well, that's not that bad then. AC load time on my PC is good. I think it's 16 seconds (the last time I timed it), but I use an entirely different launcher so it's 16 seconds from the time I press GO! and the control is given back to me with my car ready to drive.

As I said, I am experiencing problematic frame stuttering but only under specific circumstances, like when more than 10 cars are racing close in a pack. But as others have also said, the problem usually sorts itself as the field gets spread out. The mixed things you hear probably come down to different people having noticed different things and solutions. Bottom line is that frame stuttering definitely exists in the standard PS4 version, especially during replays, but it's hardly ever a gameplay problem once you learn how to avoid it. Overall, no doubt that AC is one of the smoothest running PS4 games I have played.

Oh, so the load times are faster? I doubt that has anything to do with the overclocked GPU, but I didn't know the One-S also had a slightly faster HDD... or does it? It has the exact same RAM specs though.

I think I'm fine with my current console - I will eventually have to get external storage however, and I am eyeing one of those SSD drives to enjoy faster loading and install times.
