I'm tempted to say Stefan Kuntz, but that would be childish.

I don't think there are footballers with a surname of Lichtenstein, so that rules them out...

Mike England wasn't English.

I'm struggling. Matt Holland is Irish, Pat Holland was English and never played internationally, Mike England was Welsh, Ryan France is English and hasn't played internationally either, Jason Scotland played in Scotland a lot but plays for Trinidad & Tobago and Alan Brazil was very English.

Can we get an era or a continent?

Edit: And if it's going to be Petr Cech I'm going to kill you in the face.

Joe Jordan, but he played for Scotland. I've got a funny feeling it might be Petr Cech. If it is, give me time to get the popcorn.

I've just looked this up; it's not Cech, and I wouldn't have got it just guessing countries ... Good luck!

It is not Petr Cech.

Clue, it is a small European nation, he does currently play for them, and he also shares his name with the club he plays for.

Is it Andorra, I have vague memories of there being an Andorran player named Andorra, whilst playing FIFA World cup 2010. I might be completely wrong though.

You are correct! Andorra of Andorra and FC Andorra.

It's the European link that got me :)

Anyway, my question is based on the Johnstone's Paint trophy. It has been won a maximum of twice by 8 teams ... Name these 8 teams.

Carlisle United are one :D. Haven't a clue about the rest. I'll go Chesterfield as well since I think they won it this year...

Ahh the Johnstones Paint Trophy, the one they all dream of winning.

I'l guess Bury, Chester and Walsall.

I presume we're covering all of the Football League Trophy's history rather than just the JPT era? I remember when the competition was LDV Vans, Auto Windscreens and Autoglass before that...

I know Birmingham won it twice in four years and Blackpool twice in three years relatively recently. Other than that I'd be guessing at big clubs who've been in League 1, pretty much... Swansea? Bolton? Bournemouth?

Im a swansea fan...and we won the autowindshields trophy in '95/96 (cant remember which!)..and we won the LDV vans trophy in 2006..so that twice for the swans 👍

Famine

We are indeed covering all of the competitions victors under it's varied sponsors. Birmingham, Blackpool and Swansea are correct. Bournemouth have the one win.

Yes, unfortunately Famine beat you to it. That's five down now, three to go.

I'll guess some more larger League 1 clubs over the years then :D

Wolves, Bristol City, Bristol Rovers, Port Vale (don't remember them ever winning anything, but they've had 40 years to try), Wigan and Tranmere.

And Famine sweeps the board! Port Vale (Yes, Port Vale), Bristol City and Wigan are correct. Wolves bear the distinction of being the only first division winners to hold the Football League Trophy. Over to you, Famine.

EDIT: That's 6 for Famine and 1 apiece for Ferrari_458 and NINE_HUNDRED, as far as scoring goes.

EDIT 2: I obviously meant Bristol City not Rovers, but since you got them both it doesn't matter :guilty:

Whut? Port Vale and Bristol Rovers? Good lord.

Since European football commenced in 1955, there's been many a participant from outside the English top flight - a good season seeing them win a cup (League, FA, Welsh). However, only four teams have played European football the season after being relegated from the English top flight and only three of them have been English (Swansea qualifying for the 1983/4 Cup Winners' Cup after being relegated from division 1 in 1982/3).

Name those three clubs...

TL;DR - name the three English clubs who've been relegated from the top flight but played European football the following season

Portsmouth I think are one.

No. Portsmouth would have been one but for one technicality - they didn't play in Europe the following season.

They were relegated from 20th place in 2009/10 and having reached the FA Cup final - which they lost to Chelsea who qualified for the Champions' League through winning the Premier League and thus not been able to take the UEFA Europa League place for the Cup win - they would have been eligible for the Europa League. But they had been placed in administration and lost 9pt - UEFA barred the club from competing in European competition and gave the place to Liverpool (the next highest league team) instead.

Birmingham after beating Arsenal last year I think would be another.

Birmingham City are one, yes. They won the League Cup final in 2011 and qualified for the Europa League in 2011/12, but were relegated from the Premier League in 20th place in the 2010/11 season.

They did reasonably well too - only failed to progress from the group stage by a single point, despite winning 50% of their games.
