BMW 2-Series & M2

I think the best conclusion to be drawn from this is that car companies need to stop showing off their new car inside a studio... :odd:

Also I might like this M2 if it was a skosh lower and had the old 1M wheels.

Already looks better in (relatively) real world shots

Disappointed to note that, it's actually 40kg heavier than the M235i, despite what Auto Express said.

Where are you getting your figures? Press release for M2 says 1495kg, while M235i DIN kerb weight figures in the back of our mag put the M235i 35kg heavier. If you've found lighter ones for the M235i it's likely they don't include the industry standard half tank of fuel/75kg driver.

I don't know..... it looks 'fat'. The bulging fenders are too smooth compared to the edginess of the rest of the car, so they look out of place.

It IS fat for it's size. 3550lbs for manual, and 100lbs less for the DCT.

Not a terrible looking car but it does look bloated. I think if it had less in the way of flared everything and more in the way of edgy lines that did not seem to make the car look a little podgy it would have looked really nice

It is fairly impressive that they managed to keep what is essentially an E46 M3-sized car to essentially E46 M3 weight without resorting to too many crazy things after fifteen extra years of nannying and what is almost certainly a heavier drivetrain.

It looks better in real world shots, but still doesn't suit the wheels it's on.

I guess the bonus of using what's pretty much the same engine across so many high-spec and M models is that keeping weight in check is easier.

This bests the E46 on power and weight. Here's hoping the handling is more 1M than M4, while the sound is more M235i than, er, M4.

While I'm positive the turbos account for a lot of weight, I've always been under the impression the S54 wasn't exactly light either, since it was still an iron block.

I'll have to try and find DIN weights for the M235i. It's hard to imagine them being lighter given the difference in unladen, but even BMW's UK product manager told me the M2 was lighter, so I'll have to investigate!

From BMW Press release "Specifications BMW 2 Series Coupe, 03/2014."
M235i
Weight, unladen, to DIN/EU kg 1455 / 1530 (1470 / 1545)

Who knows, maybe they were comparing it to the heaviest M235i.. the xDrive variant...

From BMW Press release "Specifications BMW 2 Series Coupe M235i xDrive, 228i, valid from 07/2014."
M235i xDrive
Weight, unladen, to DIN/EU kg 1525 / 1600

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm absolutely loving the look. I also loved the 1M but think I prefer the slightly larger look of the M2 (i.e. more coupe and less hot hatch), not to mention the colour (same as my E36 :))! So much better than the halo gold colour of the M4. Oh and it doesn't have to horrible sounding engine from the M4 so it's already a winner in my book!

Might have to drop in to my local dealer on the weekend...

I'm really liking how this looks. I'm looking forward to reading the reviews when they come out to see if the driving experience lives up to the M expectation.

I think it only looks good from the side profile, I don't like the styling at either end.

Some of the front and rear bumper detailing is a touch unnecessarily fussy, but overall it's the best proportioned 1-Series there's been. IMO.

So in Australia we get a Version called the Pure which is basically minimal options and manual only, and it's quite a bit chunk cheaper.

Is this the same in Europe?

Along with your V8 family cars, here's another reason why Australian car market is a petrolhead dream.
