Following a player on the Utah Jazz testing positive for the coronavirus, and two players falling ill prior to the Utah Jazz vs. Oklahoma City Thunder game (postponed), the NBA has suspended the season.

Player to test positive for the virus is C Rudy Gobert.

There are concerns about Emmanuel Mudiay as well on the Jazz, or at least that's what local media is reporting.

As much as I hate to see the season canceled, it does make sense. The likelihood of the entire Jazz team coming down with the virus is pretty high and as much as Utahns love basketball, it'd be hard to keep people away from areana.

...but on the other hand, it's detrimental to their guy, and it's beyond a stretch, even for Fox News, to make it brown people's fault. There's no silver bullet of xenophobic dumbassery that is applicable. So mostly...the coronavirus seems to have minimal coverage on Fox vs CNN & others.

In his TV address Trump pointedly referred to Civid-19 as a "foreign virus". So there is that.

Because I was sick last week it sort of forced me to kick my soda habbit. Now that I am in need of drinking water, all the hoarders are taking it.

Guess I'm drinking Gatorade until they knock it off.

The surreal thing is that the Knicks-Hawks and the Nuggets-Mavericks are STILL playing despite the suspended season. Literally makes no sense unless they are suspending it for all games that haven't started.

EDIT: All games AFTER tonight are suspended.

In other sports news, the NHL is also likely to suspend their season and even though the NCAA made the announcement earlier, it is still possible that the tournament is canceled altogether.

I wonder if the MLB will postpone its season too since Opening Day is in a few weeks? Seems like the MLS should follow suit too.

Is your tap water that bad that you can't drink it?

It really is a challenging situation. Rogan’s recent podcast with Michael Osterholm really hit the nail on the head; we probably won’t get a new vaccine for awhile so at some point we have to evaluate whether completely stopping life and commerce is a good thing to do here, especially when a good portion of people aren’t going to be severely affected by it. Obviously instituting some limitations to contain rapid spread and prevent avoidable death is important, but the issue does seem to be more about keeping cases at a controllable level, since in the long run everyone who is susceptible to get it is likely going to get it. Also one thing that’s pretty damning about that interview is the fact that the severity of this virus was completely avoidable, but the classic mentality of ‘if it’s not a problem now than it’s not a problem’ won out so here we are in a panic. One note from the podcast was saying ‘we spend tons of money on defense, but not on issues like this.’ You wonder if a lot of both the nativity and individualism of present society really compromised our ability to deal with a threat like this. With me I feel I’m not worried about myself but rather my family such as grandparents who would not be able to deal with this well.

This is the most comprehensive run down of Coronavirus statistics I have come across.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Assuming they are correct, they reveal some interesting things ... like Japan has had a very low infection rate relative to population. Turkey has, so far only one case, in spite of bordering Iran. Switzerland, Norway & Denmark have relatively high rates: densely populated countries with populations that travel a lot?

The US & Canada have currently very low infection rates, especially considering the vast geographic areas involved. Your chances of contracted the virus in, say Wyoming, must be minimal. However, densely populated areas are presumably vulnerable to rapid spread of the virus.

Yes, Switzerland some tourism from Asia oike the rest of the Alps region. The more travels the more Corona. Norway was a result of skiing holidays in the Alps.

Turkey, what we see is that some countries test a lot and therefore have higher rates of Corona. Like South Korea. Unsure ablit the amount of testing in Turkey.

Might as well drink out of a swimming pool. Tastes about the same.
So it is drinkable but you choose not to. Why not get a filter? It would be far cheaper than buying that bottled ripoff crap and you wouldn't have to worry about shortages as much in these sort of situations.

I buy it in gallon jugs for, I think, around $1. Apartment complex keeps a close eye on the faucets and their "water saving" restrictors they have installed.

This is quite a useful, if slightly out of date video that clears up a few questions.

I’m currently living in brisbane which as of yet isnt teeming with the stuff, but essentially my entire life requires me and my girlfriend to use public transport almost every day. I’m currently really struggling with the idea that maybe public transport isn't the beeeesst place to be at the moment, but i don't really know what the other options are until it really hits the fan and the government starts banning things. In the meantime I'm washing my hands even more obsessively than usual and trying my hardest to avoid facial contact until after ive thoroughly washed my hands twice.

I also work in a kitchen as a souschef, so contact with potentially contaminated things (such as dirty dishes) is almost impossible, and potentially unknowingly spreading the virus is also very difficult. I am certainly not particularly fearful, but i am tossing up wether or not to continue using public transport at the moment; something that is going to be very difficult for my current living situations, and probably quite expensive.

I’m also worried for the saftey of the buisness i work in. This time of year is already quite difficult for small family businesses and I honestly have no clue if its capable of surviving this, despite generally being a healthy and successful little food place. A lot of our customer base are also the elderly, which is scary for multiple reasons: they will all probably stop coming to the restaurant quite soon, and if they don’t then its quite likely that we will indirectly or directly infect them with the virus despite our best efforts.

Basically, theres a whole lot of unease in my life caused by this damn virus, and I’m one of the lucky ones who will likely be completely fine in a direct sense. Fun times

I have been watching and following a lot of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 material of late. Even here in Houston, the 2020 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo by the City of Houston. I even tried to follow some of the news from a Twitch stream. The immaturity of some people in Chat for that stream, though, annoys me to no end. I can't stand some people who troll like mad and make some things seem worse than it really is or not taking a certain situation more serious than it is or could be. So a lot of what I read basically make it seem like this is all a joke. Yeah, I can take a joke; but there are some situations where you can't joke or make things lighthearted. This is one of them. So I can't help but cringe seeing some people troll and such regarding Coronavirus/COVID-19 on Twitch. I am not freaking out over all of this, but I am surely concerned, especially now.

All I got to say is... take care of yourself and your family and loved ones as best as you can.

From the bbc live page;

Why are UK airports not screening people?

Given that this is happening in many airports abroad, lots of people have been asking this question and we’ve been asking Public Health England. Their line is still that this is not deemed a necessary step.

This year is going to be historical, this will be the biggest stoppage in the Sports Entertainment industry since WW2.

We finally, finally have the chance to reset all sporting statistical canon. It's no longer a post-war record, it's a post-corona record.

Sports TV companies must be wetting their pants at this free reset button.

I'd reckon they're far more concerned about inevitable lost revenue, since live sports are one of the very few profitable things left on broadcast television nowadays. Satellite companies like Dish Network are probably worried as well since a good chunk of their subscriptions are for (massively overpriced) sports packages.

One comparative statistic stands out to me:

South Korea - 7,755 cases, 54 deaths

Italy - 10,149 cases, 631 deaths

What's the explanation for that?
There have been several swings at this question, but another explanation is that in South Korea there was one major epicenter of a religious cult which was quite easy to identify and quarantine.

In other news, the basic question of how the novel virus might be spread is revisited:

Federally funded tests conducted by scientists from several major institutions indicated that the novel form of coronavirus behind a worldwide outbreak can survive in the air for several hours.

A study awaiting peer review from scientists at Princeton University, the University of California-Los Angeles and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) posted online Wednesday indicated that the COVID-19 virus could remain viable in the air "up to 3 hours post aerosolization," while remaining alive on plastic and other surfaces for up to three days.

"Our results indicate that aerosol and fomite transmission of HCoV-19 is plausible, as the virus can remain viable in aerosols for 42 multiple hours and on surfaces up to days," reads the study's abstract.

The test results suggest that humans could be infected by the disease simply carried through the air or on a solid surface, even if direct contact with an infected person does not occur. That finding, if accepted, would come in stark contrast to previous media reports that suggested the virus was not easily transmittable outside of direct human contact.

In the middle of a global health crisis:

"You know, my uncle was a great person. He was at MIT. He taught at MIT for, I think, like a record number of years. He was a great super genius. Dr. John Trump. I like this stuff. I really get it. People are surprised that I understand it. Every one of these doctors said, 'How do you know so much about this? ' Maybe I have a natural ability. Maybe I should have done that instead of running for president."

Pathological. Narcissist.
