It's a perfectly believable claim. You seem to agree that initially there was a small cluster of human cases. There was no evidence, and there is still no evidence, that any of that cluster caught it from a human rather than a common non-human source. The WHO reported that fact too. We now know that human-to-human transfer is possible and the WHO updated their advice as the situation changed. I don't see the problem?

The two can be mutually exclusive. The Chinese diplomat who retweeted the clip of the American doctor being asked (by an eejit) if there was a possibility that some cases of covid-19 had been undiscovered in the US. The doctor had to admit that the possibility literally existed.

Sounds to me like they don’t even believe their own BS.

Humanity is in a medical, economic, and sociological war with a virus - a global pandemic. We are not doing terribly well at the moment.
It's interesting to see which side people choose.

I say "no" somewhat sarcastically. I'll do what I can to help, but this didn't have to be my problem, but the government made it my problem directly. (speaking as a business owner).

I like Eunos's opinion on allocation of government money. Given the choice between shutting down the global economy (costing the world trillions of dollars) or investing a fraction of that to prepare for an influx of Covid-19 cases at hospitals, I'll take the latter. We can't guarantee we'll eradicate Covid-19, or that there won't be a second spike in cases after the spring, but we can guarantee preparedness and practice basic sanitation without decimating everyone's livelihood.

Whenever I speak of “China” in this context, I'm speaking about the CCP specifically. I’ll make more effort to differentiate between the two. In no way do I hold the average Chinese citizen responsible for these events.

Over decades, the US has outsourced roughly 90% of our pharmaceutical and medical equipment industries, as well as vital automotive, aviation, electronics and other industrial supply chains. Now they threaten to cut us off from these vitally needed industries which form the basis of our national health, economy and military backbone. They say our military and basketball players are the source of their coronavirus. We may be only millimeters away from catastrophic conflict with our frenemies if certain issues aren't straightened out, and quick.

Exactly this. It’s not at though the South China Sea was a playground where everyone was getting along...now throw WuFlu in the mix, it’s not a good situation.

Several Twitter accounts dedicated to covering China that I follow have been saying for a while now, “it’s not just a trade war,” and I’m starting to believe them more and more.

Edit: I also find it beyond hilarious that after the NBA’s debacle over the Hong Kong protests, they’re now being thrown under the bus by the CCP

Since then, China has recorded less than 300 new cases - but the rest of the world has seen more than 90000 new cases.

Kind of crazy how a country with 18.5% of the world's population can contain the virus so effectively that the rest of the world now has an infection rate some 300 times higher, despite having only 4.4 times the population.

Well, at least the planet is getting healthier as the rest of us get sick: There's been a measurable and significant decrease in nitrogen dioxide levels in the last month, thanks to factories closing and cars not driving.

Given that this is a respiratory disease we're dealing with, less air pollution is certainly a plus.

While I, like others, question the figures coming out of China, there is a marked difference between east asian cultures and western cultures in how they respond to authority, and how they act.

If I was going compare east asian culture with western culture then I'd probably say this.

East asians are like a colony of ants in that they are perfectly organised, everybody knows their jobs, and more importantly respect authority.

Westerners are like a herd of cats in that they are out for themselves, couldn't give a toss about what anybody else thinks, do whatever they want, and have absolutely no respect for authority.

As an analogy I think that it holds up, especially given the behaviour of people that I've seen reported in the European and American press of late.

Disclamer - I'm a westerner - I just see things how they are.

This would explain why Russia only has 253 confirmed cases. Even Iceland has more confirmed cases at 409. It doesn't really shock me though since the Russian government isn't exactly forthright with its information. I honestly feel bad for the Russian people at times, especially with Putin running the show until something like 2036. At least here in the US, we can change out the head idiot with another person after 4 or 8 years.

I must say Germany's death rate is extremely low. They have almost as many cases at Spain but with 68 deaths compared to over 1,000. Good healthcare or robust Germanic spirit?

I think like S. Korea, they haven’t wasted any time getting into action. From the beginning, it would appear Germany has been at the front of keeping its outbreak recorded and treated properly compared to everyone else.

So I came across this interesting read regarding a meeting before the 2017 inauguration meant to help future administration officials with preparedness for a situation such as this in our country, and while exercises were purely hypothetical, there's an eerie similarity to what's going on now.

As is mentioned in the article, no hypothetical exercise could have truly prepared such a group, but a number of those in attendance who would soon be in a position where they could have to address the actual situations had no interest in taking things seriously.

My work might switch us to AM/PM shifts with an hour between for cleaning. One shift would be 5am to 2pm and the other would be 3pm to 12am. So we can get the same amount of work done but cut the number of people around at any given time in half. This is assuming Arizona doesn't go all shelter in place like California.

@PeterJB I think Germany started testing more people earlier. Also, they don't do post-mortem tests to know if people previously not tested as carrying the virus, actually were infected. But I'm not sure which countries do that and which don't tbh.
