My experience of parallax occlusion mapping is that most of the time, especially when moving, you won't notice it. It'll look great in photos, though, and the odd time you stare at a given surface long enough to crash...

The self shadowing might make it more obvious, but at the same time less jarring and weird-looking (as parallax mapping sometimes can, almost like the old voxel games of the late '90s.)

I was just thinking if that was you

Can you further elaborate of the defintion? and will it actually be noticable?
As Griffith500 said, it's more a subtle change, but it will make rough surfaces look less flat and give pictures more depth. I'm pretty stoked about how flexible the engine is, he also tweeted that tire deformation will be added. Upgrades like this a whole year+ after release are stunning. Might be a sign that we'll see the engine in the next generation too.

Yeah they'll no doubt be using this engine this gen, which is why they're having such gorgeous visuals, would be interested if they loan their engine for other first or second party stuidos.

Interested in knowing what is their plan for the future, I bet we will here something next E3.

There is actually tyre deformation already in place with the bikes, but I suppose that is logical considering they have been released so close to the start of the graphical upgrade.

Finally got all the stars on the bike tour, took me a bit longer than most of the car events.
The race with 9 laps was the hardest.
Still prefer the cars over the bikes, so can't wait for december.

Regarding SSPOM, is it implemented already? or did VVV get it wrong, my understanding was it will be in a future upgrade.
I just swung by to say that I'm surprised no one has posted any pictures yet. It's already implemented (which I only found out about twenty minutes ago when reading through the FB posts.)

I have two replays ready to try this out, but sadly no time this evening - so tomorrow morning it'll have to be.

@MeanElf I drove over the cobbles and at speed they looked more raised and felt rougher and more vibration on the tyres (Although I could be imagining that as I knew they had worked on them and had a Car tailgating me but that corner was always a lot smoother I am sure!) but forgot to stop and take a picture as I was flying over them, and didn't have a replay so will have a look tomorrow now properly if I get the chance.

After a cursory inspection, under less than ideal lighting...I know, I must say that the areas under this effect do look impressive.

I'll have more time tomorrow to explore this - preliminary feeling though is very positive.

Should've used tessellation... :P

It doesn't really work at oblique angles, the planar nature of the (real) geometry being evident. But it is pretty when presented well.
Yeah, sort of noticed that too low an angle is also a bit hit and miss, but for the purposes of photo mode a bit of artful depth of field wizardry and it all comes out good.

Forgot to add that only sections of the cobbled bit are under this effect, mostly in the centre of the road.
