Engine Swaps in Gran Turismo 7? New Screenshots Raise New Questions

If we’re talking about dream engine swaps now, I think one I’ve always wanted to try is a Ferrari 458 Italia with the Enzo’s V12 engine. I get the point of the 458 is to be the lightweight V8 car but I’ve always been insanely interested to see what it would be like with a larger engine stuck in the back.

Also an EK-9 Civic with some sort of V6 (possible Renault?) in it would be pretty cool IMO

I guess one final one I can think of is doing a Hyundai Genesis 3.8 Track and swapping in the V8 from the Corvette Stingray. Make it a true Mustang or Camaro competitor. So I guess sort of like the Rhys Millen RM500.

.....but his point isn't adding slower cars "just for the sake" of adding slower cars. There is legitimate reasoning behind it of which I happen to agree with. .....besides some of my own points of the view on the topic.

For one, slower cars are much more forgiving to drive and allow much more time for players to assess situations, plan and react. Simple mistakes don't necessarily turn into costly consequences like dropping a tire off the edge of the track or being nudged traveling 150MPH down a straight. They are easier to recover and keep racing.

There's also something to said about these more common car types that tend to speak to the everyday driver. How many times have we heard people reminiscing about cars they've owned and wished they were represented in the game. .....many, relatively common cars but people still form connections with them.

To your point, the fact that we are now able to customize these vehicles again brings it to a whole new level. Players are able to grow and appreciate their efforts by upgrading their cars. Maybe a dream they always had in real life but never did / could.

Don't get me wrong. Driving exotic & race cars is great. .....GT3 happens to be my favorite class but I also wouldn't mind a wider selection of more "everyday" cars that I can own and modify.

Being a 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T owner, I loved having the '08 represented in GT5/6. I was hoping the modern Challenger would make a comeback personally in GT7. .....as well as a 1969 Charger given I'm a fan and owner of that car as well. .....and maybe the 02/03 "bugeye" WRX because again, I have a personal connection with one I owned over 8 years.

I think these slower cars are simply more accessible to most and (I think) most will feel more of a personal connection with these that they interact with in their daily lives through ownership, a realistic desire to purchase and so on.
When people speak of slower cars, they mean things like a Prius. The '08 Challenger you mention (SRT8 I believe in GT5/6), is not really a "slow car". Then again, there are already easy cars to drive in the game, like the Golf GTI and such. I mean, an Evo X is as easy as it gets really, being both kinda fast and usable.

Then again, just because people have a connection with a real car, doesn't mean PD now has to model that car for the game. Why? Because if 10000 people owned 10000 different cars which they created a connection with, then PD would have to model 10000 cars. Is that achiveable? Of course not. Either that, or they select just a few, and the rest will remain disappointed.

With that said, the developer has the choice of either add cars that will only please a very limited number of players, or add actually popular/remarkable cars. And the choice is usually with the intent to please as many people as possible. In the end, what matters is where PD spends their resources, because every "slow car" PD adds, is one less highly requested car that we get. Just to give you an idea, the McLaren P1, is the 3rd most voted car in the Suggestions forum since 2014. This means that they prioritised cars like the Toyota Aqua or the Honda Fit Hybrid over the P1! Which is crazy to think of.

I think that, for most people, playing a racing game is a way for them to drive cars that they will never be able to drive in real life. Driving cars that they actually own/owned in real life, is something that only a few would be able to do so, because out of millions of players, the game can't have every car they may or may not own.

As for the usual "everyday car" argument, people need to understand that a BMW M4 is an everyday car, just like any other 4-series, just faster and better. This aplies for the Polo and Golf GTI, Focus RS, Charger Hellcat, and so on. They are performance versions of everyday cars, and having a slower version instead of the performance one, makes no sense from a gaming perspective. When PD chooses to model an M5, we are getting the best of both worlds, being as much of an everyday car as it is a performance car. This is why I always say, when in doubt, just add the performance version, as that version will be a lot more interesting to drive in a game.

I’m going to disagree with that personally. Having the slower versions of certain models in games is useful for filling up different performance brackets in the game in a cheap and easy way. For example a base model Charger would be racing much different competition than the Hellcat model because of the speed differential between the two, so having them both allows for a quick and easy way of filling up different tiers in the game’s ladder with minimal effort on the modelling side of things. Also gives fans of that model of car more opportunities to use it in different scenarios.

Might be kind of boring but it’s good for filling up a car roster with semi-duplicates.

I will agree though there are some weird examples in GT7. Both the Renault Clio models (2015 and 16) for example are too close for me not to consider them duplicates. Also the base E30 M3 and the Sport Evo are only a couple of PP points off. But in other examples, the base 993 and the 993 Clubsport RS are quite different cars, same goes for the Camaro SS and ZL1 1LE Track Package thingymabober.

Also, sleepers are cool. Everyone loves sleepers. That will definitely be facilitated by engine swaps in GT7.

Oh dear, Everyone just needs to have the mindset that these engine swaps will be apart of the 'racing modification' upgrade and that way we can all be happy and surprised if engine swaps do turn up in the game. Even if this is the case it won't be on every car?

If people get their hopes up and think that seeing the Porsche engine in a beetle means they can swap anything into anything, they'll end up disappointed.

I got a win straight away with the opening clip showing a standing start which i was worried they wouldn't have

It's all relative but when I speak of slower cars in the context of this game, I'm certainly not just meaning something like a Prius, more Kei cars, etc., but I that's why I provided the lengthy explanation I did.

....and yeah, something like the Golf is a good example but wanting more of these types of vehicles doesn't mean every possible year, make & model or "10,000" more of them. Obviously you can't represent what everyone wants in the game but you can certainly include more examples without going overboard. .....especially those types of cars that people would want to modify and have a history with "car guys".

I had a F40 poster on my wall in high school in the 80's but I never realistically thought I would own one. .....but there were a lot of other "slower", more affordable cars that I thought were cool too. Ones I knew I might own some day and eventually did in some cases.

....and with the new upgrade mechanic making a return in GT7, I think I might actually start enjoying the cheaper cars even more.

It depends on the car, and how it's done. They don't need to add the base model Charger, we could use the one in GT6 (SRT8 '11). Then a modern Challenger as well, SRT8 and Hellcat for example. I don't think it's common to add a "downgraded" version of an existing car to the game. Having the M4 '14, there's no point in adding an inferior version, people would rather have the new M4 or another entirely different model from the brand (be it an M2, 1M Coupe, M135i, M8 Comp., M5, etc). This gives us both variety, and different options from the brand in multiple PP ranges.
You mentioned Porsche, which lacks a modern road car bellow the GT3 RS, right? Instead of a base 911, a Cayman GT4/S/GTS (pick 1) should do the trick.

Sure, a few Kei cars won't hurt! The same goes for 1 Prius (plus the Touring Car version from GT5/6). The problem is if they start adding every Prius ever, and 20 Kei cars, and so on. And this would hurt the appeal of the game for the general/casual audience. Some Kei cars were really cool, others not so much. Some "normal" cars are cool, others not so much. So, it's fine to have some.

Meanwhile, just to give you some context, GT7 is a modern racing game, to be released in 2022, and has only 6 road legal hypercars, the Veyron, LaFerrari, One-77, Huayra, Veneno and Ruf CTR3. And yet, only two of them are really hypercars.
We could stretch the definition of hypercar so it would contain the Enzo, Carrera GT, SLR, McLaren F1 and even the new Ford GT, making it 11 cars. We could loosen up the criteria even more, to include some VGTs that look like hypercars... let's say 10 more, there are 21. I will loosen the criteria one more time, to include race car versions of hypercars and such, so these include the Vulcan, FXX-K, P1 GT-R and Zonda R. So the total ends up being 25 "hypercars", 26 if we include the 917 Living Legend. Meanwhile, there are some 28 really low powered cars in GT7 so far, not even counting with the small hot hatchbacks. Didn't even bother to count with every car under 200hp in the game. The point is, do we really need more very low powered cars? Food for thought I guess.

Back on topic, it just clicked in my head, that hopefully PD got the Carrera GT sound right, and we can swap its engine to other Porsches.

....again, not what I was saying at all but it's clear I'm not coming through on my point.

Kei Cars are especially appealing to me if I can swap in the engine out of the confirmed Radical SR3.
200 HP Hayabusa-swapped Honda S660 anyone? Honda Beat? Honda S600?

Also it might be possible that other Radical cars are included, which would give more swapping options

While on the topic of the Radical, wont that thing have the most engine swaps due to the fact that you can have basically any engine you want in one?

It may have zero.

Whats being forgotten, but we know very well from Forza, is that manufacturers will limit what cars they will let there engines be swapped into.

Don't expect many swaps outside brands or brand families.

I met a guy with a 2.7 S motor in his Ghia. Some nice swaps if we can do the same with the 356s and Spyder. Keep it water cooled or air cooled?

I remember back in GT6 when some people I guess was hacking the game but they were using motors and offsets from different t cars. They made some good combinations, I’m thinking PD saw this because I was never expecting us to change motors!

Engine swaps would not only open up a ton of potential for fun modifications, but I think it'd also address anyone upset over being unable to hack their game to do exactly that. I'd welcome the idea with open arms.

I can almost guarantee this will be more realistic. You can put a VW 1.8T engine into a Mk1 gti. You can put a Porsche air-cooled engine in an old air-cooled bug. Stuff like that. A Honda k20/k24 into a EG hatch, etc.

What I really hope is that it also affects the weight and balance of a car. There are tons of VR6 mk1 golfs out there, but they're all front heavy as **** and handle like crap and I hope that type of thought is put into the engine swap feature.

To me, the three most important engine swaps will be:

  • 13B from the RX-7 or RX-8 Spirit R into the Roadster Touring Car
  • 2JZ from the Supra into the Prius G (with full race kit)
  • S65 from the E92 M2 into the E30 M3 Evolution

Anything else is fairly insignificant for me!

Hmm, swapping that Super GT500 GT-R 4-cylinder in a 240Z. The GT500 Lexus SC430 V8 in a Crown. Mmhmm.

What? No F1 V12 in the E30? ;)

Ooooh yeah … if gearbox swaps are also included one can easily recreate the
Driftworks S65 M3 E30 with DCT gearbox 😎

I think engine swaps are going to be limited.
Yeah, I hope people don't let themselves get too carried away with this. If they approach it the way Forza used to by using correct engine names/source cars etc then it isn't going to be as free form as people seem to think. I expect the iconic stuff like the Beetle/Porsche swap, Honda B series, LS, maybe the 2JZ and SR20.

The newer Forza games kind of got around the licensing side by turning the engine swaps in to generic engines (but easy to figure out what they are if you know) which certainly increased the number of swaps you could do (especially with things like the 1.6l turbo rally engine). But there will still be limitations even doing it that way.

That isn't to say that Gran Turismo hasn't gone that route, we have only seen 1 piece of the puzzle. But it is unlikely they'll have gone generic.

Most likely it wil be a car of 10... but best thing is swapping any motor in any car but that won't be the reality..
I think the most important thing is there adding motor swap so they can add a lot of more in the future....

Like i mentioned before the greatest will be if you need to search for a UCD for a old car with a good motor or a great car and bring in a motor from a newer car, something like the supra of FF1....

Now that would be something else! But no, that would be a bit too much of a fantasy swap for me to buy into! It's like having an Audi R8 V10 engine dropped into a Scirocco - completely mad.

I also saw Anti-Lag in the tuning menu. I wonder if this will work like real ALS, or is it just something that will add horsepower? The first thing I noticed was the displacement of the beetle.

I wonder if we’ll be able to do engine swaps on a kei car? That could be real fun. Like putting the engine from the S2000 into the S660.
