Just to point out, no virtual thing can be classed as a 'sim'. Yes, people can call it realistic, but calling it a simulation of the real thing is an overstatement. Add to that the fact that nobody here or on the Codemasters team has ever driven an F1 car, and Anthony Davidson only gave advice. So whatever the outcome, those who haven't experienced it can't compare it to the real thing.
I beg to differ. F355 Challenge, for example, can easily be classified as a sim, esp. considering the fact that the man behind it used his own F355C as the basis for the game.

That said, any game can be classed as a sim if it does the job well enough. Just because some of us can't compare the cars doesn't mean no one can.

This gets me so confused and irked.

Who decides what a sim is? How realistic should it be?

Because by definition almost all racing games now can be considered a sim.

Simulation - "the imitative representation of the functioning of one system or process by means of the functioning of another." - from Webster dictionary. It does not state how real or accurate it should be.

So is this just based on someone's opinion that some racing games are sims and others are not?

That video is very disappointing to me. It looks very much "like a game", with sudden AI movements, imperfect graphics and very basic graphics and animations for the pit crews.
I've come to expect better these days, F1:CE still looks better simply because it uses a clean filter (not this daft brown filter), as F1 2010 doesn't appear to have any improvements over it in graphics or animations, maybe the rain effects.

Hopefully this means the physics and gameplay are good though and that they spent on time on those. Not off to a good start though. A bit odd that Codies released such a video without touching it up a bit.

Trailers of this nature are never supposed to be representive of actual gameplay, not forgetting this video is in 360p at most, of course it will look rubbish. Just no evidence to base any substantial opinion on it, it's a minute or so of gameplay in a low resolution.

No matter how mutch the physics are tweaked it will still be central-axis steering and not feel very nice to drive, just like lot's arcade games (GRID especially) and F1CE.

I've seen this come up several times, but no one has ever specified exactly what the problem was. What's wrong with F1CE's physics?

I'm not going to claim that they're the greatest thing I've ever used, but if there was another F1 game that drove like that I don't think that would be the worst thing that could happen. They very much emphasize cornering speeds and racing lines, which feels about right to me in a F1 game.

Yeah between the recent videos and the recent screenshots on the F1 official website, I'm a bit disappointed as well.

You mention a "daft brown filter", and I think I see what you mean. By comparison, the colors in F1CE seem far more vibrant and clear. Yes, I've been playing F1CE on my 720 32" TV, so its not a direct comparison, but the colors do look like crap in this video, and in screenshots. Particularly, the yellows of the Renault cars look to be the wrong shade - perhaps its the brown filter you've described. In every F1 race I've watched this season, the yellow of their cars is much closer to the primary color yellow, and much more vibrant.

I've noticed in final video they've released on the codemaster's website, that all the video footage says "Work In Progress". So, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now, in the hopes that the final product is everything it should be. F1CE is my favorite racing sim of all time right now, period. That makes it a very tough act to follow in my book.

I'm not sure if anybody else has ever thought this, but there seems to be one major flaw with the F1 games career mode. You start off at the slower teams and then over the seasons you make your way through the teams and eventually race for one of the top constructors. But the thing is through every season you are racing with the same cars. This isn't anything like real life because obviously the cars develop and change throughout the seasons. I have just always thought that if they wanted a truly amazing F1 game then they should start many seasons back, say 2004 and finish your career with the latest season. That way you could see teams come and go, along with the drivers and see the cars develop. I know this would be incredibly hard to do, but it just sounds like such a great idea and it would make one hell of a game.

Then the game producers could always improve the game by adding the latest season each year and even older teams. Now this is completely farfetched, but imagine if there was enough seasons then you could even pick which era you wanted to start your career. Such as the turbo era in the 80's or whenever you liked. Racing all of the old and iconic cars would just be so cool, and you could get to race against all of the legends of the sport as well. But like I said, that bit is very unlikely. Just a thought.

But yes, I'm so glad that another F1 game is being made after a few years, and from what I have seen so far it looks like the best one to date :sly:

They have mentioned that teams will receive upgrades over time and that a lower level team could eventually be a top team performance wise. They haven't mentioned much more than that though, chances are the cars will look the same no matter what, but the performance will increase.

What you are suggesting would be cool, but would be more work that it would be worth.

For that level of detail you need the raft of mods for Rfactor, they have the different updates for the cars over the seasons, I doubt the cars will change appearance in this game as Justin says.

Chase and Status was a damn good choice. 👍

Agreed as the local Chavs would say "thats a peng chune" :)
I will probably get this now tdu2 delayed :( I just wonder What Abu Dahbi(SP?) race will be like being a twilight race and how have they modelled S.Korea its not finshed in real life yet?

As long as the graphics are up too par with CE and I can hear random bits of commentary and My team orders I will be happy.
But if I hear "Fernando is faster then you do you understand this message" im going to sell it ASAP. :D

It's Codemasters, so the handling should be pretty good.

I'm well aware of the status of the videos....but you don't release trailers of alpha builds. Pretty obviously any trailers at this point start to be representative of the final product.
Like I said, I expected Codemasters to ramp up the polish but instead they've released what looks like an early build-based trailer. Now, I still expect the game to look a bit better, but even so, its disappointing that Codemasters didn't even bother to release a more polished and up-to-date video. And it doesn't really bode well.

If an official trailer mere months before release isn't an indicator of some kind of quality, then I don't know what is.

Codemasters (and other developers) have used the brown filter on their graphics to help smooth out the jaggies without using AA. It was parodied on Uncharted with the "HD vision" cheat, which made everything brown .
Its a cheap trick and personally I think it looks horrible.

GRID featured the same horrid brown filter. I fully expect this game to feature it at release.

How awesome would it be if they hid that one quote in the game for the specific situation that you're driving for Ferrari, you're first and Alonso is second and he's right behind you (say, less than two seconds)?

I think I'd probably crash after I heard it because I'd be laughing too hard. This is exactly the sort of thing I'd put in games if I was making them. Also, all of Vettel's in race whinging.

Be thankful the first part of that song goes
"When the blood dries in my veins and my heart feels no more pain, I know I'll be on my way to heaven's door"

Oh, and after seeing this my advice for people who want to drive realistic F1 cars and don't care too much about the media side is, wait for Rfactor 2. RF1 is already the best F1 sim out there by a long way.

I would say wait and play the game first, rFactor is good yes, but we havn't played F1 2010 yet so you cannot possibly make judgement over how real it is compared to RF1.

The team are working flat out at the moment to meet the release date is what was expressed to me.
Aparently the version shown at Gamescon will be a newer build than the one shown at E3.

Their wont be a public released demo prior to the games release. Which was a surpise as Codemasters usually always do have a demo.

Well, we only have to wait about 1 more month. I"m chomping at the bit as much as anyone else, but I'd rather they put the effort into making it right for the official release.
