Hey Guys, with the new season only 61 days away and the unveiling of the 2012 cars just around the corner, it promises to be a great season. Some new drivers on the scene, some old returning(GO KIMI!!), United States is back on the scene again after a few years off. A total of 20 events is planned for 2012, fingers crossed we get to see the Bahrain event go ahead this year. Will the wonder boy Vettel make this year his 3rd consecutive drivers title and constructors title for the Red Bull team, who knows, but ones things for sure, the boys at Mclaren International and The Prancing Horse from Maranello will be giving it 110% to make sure they don't...

Ferrari confirm February 3 launch for new car

Ferrari’s 2012 car will make its public debut early next month, the Italian team have confirmed. The new machine, the name of which has yet to be revealed, will be presented to the media at the Fiorano circuit near Maranello on February 3.

Its predecessor, the 150° Italia, brought Ferrari relatively limited success in 2011, scoring just a single Grand Prix win in the hands of Fernando Alonso and powering the team to a distant third in the constructors’ standings, well behind rivals Red Bull and McLaren.

The new Ferrari, which will be raced by the unchanged driver line-up of Alonso and Felipe Massa, is expected to be given an initial shakedown shortly following launch, before making its full test debut at the first pre-season, multi-team session at Jerez in Spain on February 7-10.

Raikkonen to test 2010-spec Renault in January

2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen will get back behind the wheel of a Formula One car for the first time in two years later this month. Raikkonen will sample a 2010-spec Renault at the Spanish circuit of Valencia during a specially-arranged two-day test designed to help him reacclimatise to F1 ahead of his return to the sport this season.

The Finn, who will drive for the newly-rebadged Lotus team (formerly Renault) in 2012, visited the outfit’s UK Enstone factory last week for a seat fitting and to catch up with engineers. He last drove an F1 car at the 2009 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix when he bid farewell to Ferrari.

Raikkonen will be in action at Valencia from January 23-24 and is expected to run on Pirelli's demo-spec tyres. He is then due to join new team mate Romain Grosjean at the first multi-team pre-season test, which will take place at Jerez from February 7-10.

And we can't use the respective separate Grand Prix threads that come about to discuss this in then?

Can't see the problem, it worked for the WRC 2012 thread, I guess some people are just never happy with others doings or just like to complain...
Anyways, I hope everyone enjoys the coming season and this thread gives them up to date news on this years events and keeps multiple F1 threads from appearing, reducing the clutter on GTPlanet... 👍

F1 gets a lot more discussion than the WRC, so it warrants individual threads. Helps keep things organized and easy to find.

Last year we had individual threads for car launches aswell, it helped keep things organised rather than lumping everything into one thread and having multiple discussions going on at once (Which is what threads are for in the first place, to divide the various topics of discussion).

Not a bad idea for a thread but everything that can go in here has it's own respective thread e.g. the GP specific thread for anything GP related, car launch threads for anything related to specific cars/teams, driver transfer thread for any discussions on drivers, F1 Mechanics and design thread for any technical innovations, along with other big story threads like the Kubica crash thread and the Raikkonen/Schumacher return threads.

I still believe F1 should have it's own sub-forum as the tagging system is not great so the Motorsport section gets bombarded with F1 related topics, when as you say most other motorsport discussion resides in a single thread (Which just wouldn't work with F1 due to the sheer amount of discussion it creates).

WRC has about one response per race...so that's like saying 1 sleeping pill is good but 12 will be better.

One F1 race thread per week or two doesn't make for much clutter. The problem could be with you and not us. 👍

The difference between the WRC and Formula 1 is that Formula 1 has a massive following, justifying individual race threads. The WRC does not have that following, so it gets one thread for the entire season. This thread, on the other hand, will probably die out once the season starts.

Also, there is nothing official about it.

£201 for the cheapest seat for Sunday at Silverstone even this early. Why is it so impossibly expensive :(.

This.

Feel free to start a pre season testing thread, but this thread as it is does not get to live.

Oh, and only a staff member can create an official GTP thread

Yes.

No.

It creates more clutter, and less searching. "One thread to rule them all" is annoying for us to moderate, difficult to join, newcomers won't read the whole thing, and thus far, our thread-per-event methods used in the past 10 years have worked fine so far.

We used to have a separate WRC forum, but it wasn't as popular, so one thread seems to work. Same with NASCAR, IRL, and non-motor sport activity, although there's technically nothing wrong with starting a new thread for s particular event, or events "outside the race track" or between the flags.

With all due respect, perhaps you speak from experience at other boards, but we've had little to no complaints about the way we've done things here so far. At a message board or forum where F1 does not have as great an audience, the One Thread idea is fine.
