Fastest You've Ever Gone in Your Car?

My car has a factory speed limiter, at 174km/h, but it has more in it, if I ever decided that 174km/h wasn't fast enough, when I stick to about 120-140km/h on the open stretches where there are no white cars with P, O, L, I, C and E written down the side, and 3 million aerials on the boot.

I was riding with my dad somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Kansas. We were in his convertible M3 with the top down. We were on a long flat stretch of road with no people on it and it was about 5 miles. He had his little police radar thing on and it didnt show anything. I was sitting there playing my ds and then all of the sudden i just feel my body push back into my seat and just kept on playing. after 1 minute of that i looked at the speedometer and it said 155. I almost crapped myself. And then his police radar starts beeping and he just slams on the brakes and i flew forward. Thats the fastest ive ever gone.

on a side note, I decided to do what I joked about before, disconnecting the speedo from the trans, resulting in a chack engine light, and a dead speedometer, along with an active tach (fortunatly).
according to the best 4th grade math I could muster, I got 133(give or take 1mph), but had to quit as I was approaching a civilized area.
I can tell you 2 things: 1. Grand-Ams are not very stable over 130mph, (fear was approaching me, which is impressive, because I'm usually to stupid to get scared) and 2. GM has definetly saved lives of stupid, or just bad drivers, all possible passengers, and all possible innocent bystanders by putting a speed governor in at 105.

Try driving a Honda CRV or previous generation Toyota RAV4 above 80mph...you talk about scary! Oh and the Escape/Tribute is very scary over 90mph.

Bad 'Control' is when you take a half-restored 1952 Morris Minor that has no tyre grip, seats not bolted into place and you're going 55mph and you a hit a 3 ft Jump spanning 2m and your head smashes against the cold-steel roof.

My wife's '00 Honda CR-V can get up to 100 mph with not much complaint. The motor's not the quietest, but the wind noise is pretty much a constant volume from 70-100 mph, so it's really quite sedate. The car has always tracked straight and true, hardly a vibration from the steering wheel. I've driven several 1000-mile distances in it, and it's always been trouble-free, and the 146hp motor is adequate for it's heft. I don't really like the "bus driver" driving position for short trips, but the position is nice for touring/sight-seeing, and and it's quite easy on my body after 12 hours of driving. It could use a 5th gear, too.

As for cornering, that's another matter. Not reccomended unless you're used to it's bodyroll motions; even then, I have to take sharper turns with considerable easing of the throttle.

So my answer for the CR-V is 100 mph; the wife doesn't like me going faster than that in her car. It is a high-mounted Civic station wagon, when it's all said and done. I haven't taken the Lexus past 95 mph yet, but we'll see as I have a little weekend vacation planned in a few weeks...

Drive the CRV/RAV4 that fast and brake hard...infact drive 55mph and brake hard...it doesn't matter. They feel like I'm driving a cardboard box. The CRV is one of the worst things I've ever driven. It makes my Focus feel like it's built in Stuttgart. I had to drive those things everyday when I worked at a Honda dealer...and I HATED them more than anything. I'd rather drive a used rusted out Chevy over 150mph than drive a CRV/RAV4 anywhere at any speed.

Dont' worry, cars aren't personal, no matter how much the fanboys squeal.

Although the CR-V/RAV4 are boxes on a small-car platform, they aren't exactly dangerous or scary to drive. I've driven some scary cars:

- A '73 VW Beetle that couldn't stay in a straight line at anything over 20 mph and certianly not helped by a very windy day.

- An '85 Escort station wagon that nearly shook the fillings out of my teeth 45 mph and up. It smelled like dead rat when the A/C was on. I first drove with that car (notice I didn't say "learned").

- An RX 330 with no brakes. None. Zip. Zilch. Downshift-to-first! Had to pick it up 2 miles from my job...no tow truck!

I also found out my braking system's going bad... as GM uses an X system, where one balancer controls rf, and lr, and the other controls lf, and rr, to give braking on both sides of the car if it goes bad. but at 130mph, that son of a b**** dove harder right than I ever couldve imagined, as I never felt it do that before, even up to 105.

But, it's gone now, thanks to a horrible driver driving through a stop sign, into the side of me, in the rain. "I couldnt see" "then get off the road, B****!"

That was the speed the tach was showing, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's off by 7 kmh or something like that.

It felt like there was still quite a bit left in the car (VW Golf V GTI) , but I didn't want to push the rpm's too far because the car only has 1200 km on it.

Nope.

The GTI goes from 60 km/h (37 mph) to 100 km/h in 5th gear in only 7.5 seconds and reaches its maximum at 235 km/h (146 mph).

Wouldn't be the thing I'd be doing with only 1200 on the clock either.

Well, that's why I said that I wouldn't be surprised if the tach is off by a certain margin. So in reality, the speed could have been something like 224kmh.

And you're also forgetting that external factors like wind direction/speed
and the angle of the road (downhill and stuff) influence the speed of the car.

Jeez man, It's easy to quote some articles from the internet, but I've actually driven the car so I know what I'm talking about.

Typical error on mass-produced road cars is a 7-10% overread.

An indicated 235km/h could be as much as 235km/h (146mph), or as little as 212km/h (132mph). You'd need a GPS-device to be reasonably sure what your speed was to within a percent or so. Or you can work it out from your engine speed, gearbox ratio, final drive ratio and wheel rolling radius.
