this sport is just watered down hockey with swarms of hornets in the crowd... I don't understand why everyone likes it so much

Why would you come into a socced-based thread and say that? C'mon man....

Because I'm watching a soccer game for the first time ever... I'm expressing my opinion, not trying to start anything. lighten up (ibinfraction/ban)

In the scheme of things this game means little more than bragging rights in our group. I would expect both teams to progress past the group stages but, the US are pushing their luck if they go all out to beat the English team. I doubt the US will get many more 'lucky' breaks like the goal that was gifted to them.

EDIT: did anyone see the Addidas advert with snoop-dog in the cantina bar from Star Wars? much better than the Nike ad.

So long as Rob Green stays in goal, they will. His first act as a keeper in the match was to spill a ball my dog could have stopped.

As usual.

You are assuming the English defence will allow more shots at goal. Maybe Green will sharpen up a little now; it is only his tenth cap!

He's been on the England scene 4 years. He's never been anything but terrible.

Everybody wins! Good game for both England and USA!

It was a terrible game. England being their usual, negative, bad-passing selves and letting the US in - and the US being unable to capitalise. Not to mention Robert Bloody Green.

England should have change to 4-2-3-1, in my opinion that way would have more ball possesion and a better flow for the attack. The football technique was far better (naturally/obviously) but the US had a good defence. Too many failed shoots on goal... bad game for England , good game for the US!

there's a long way to go yet Famine, don't get too disheartened.

Eh, what do I know? The game of "Foccer" is still new to me.

Change your avatar. Now. I left you a VM about it an hour ago.

Done. Was whatching the game and making some quick comments. Didnt saw your VM, otherwise would have change it earlier:tup:!

Thank you. Much better (well... from a family-friendly point of view).

If you mean that it involves players scoring goals then yes, it's almost exactly the same....

The pass near the end summed it up when it was in extra time and Carragher had the ball, he was directly facing Johnson (or Lennon) who was up the field, well on side and in loads of space and he turned round and passed it back to to Terry. I just looked at Charlotte and said what the hell was that. We didn't play positively for enough of the match. Green directly cost us the win and I hope he doesn't start another game for England again, both Heart and James are better than him so why he gets the nod over them both I'll never know.

Also he takes off Milner in the first half, Donovans got the beating of him and he's picked up an early yellow after a few rash tackles. Fair enough, but he replaces him with Wright-Phillips, a right sided winger and arguably a better right sided player than Lennon who we actually have on the right, and leave our best left sided player in Joe Cole on the bench.

Is it just me or did anyone else find that a little bit odd.

I don't think England did so bad. Of course, I would have been as happy as anyone else to see the team win 14-0 but, it doesn't always pay to go all-out in the first group game. A draw in the first game is steady and it will not affect the chances of progressing past the group stages.

Things to be pleased about:
Green will me a sharper and more focused keeper and will probably do a lot more work with the ball.
There were no injuries to our players.
We didn't bust a gut or get walloped.

Good day for the Scots! USA hold England to a draw and we beat Argentina at rugby.
:D

He only touched the ball with his hands while it was in play twice. One of those was to knock it into his own net.

He's inept. He always has been and always will be. I'm quite a critic of David James as a keeper - though he is an excellent shot-stopper and penalty saver - so it has to come to something when I say I prefer David James to some other keeper. I prefer David James to Rob Green.

I'd prefer to put Susan Boyle, Angelica from the Rugrats, my dog or fourteen cubic feet of argon gas in goal than Robert Green.
