Morning folks. So, I spent a good few hours testing some cars yesterday with my Clueless brethren and I think I might have come across an idea for a FITT event. However, this one may take some serious organisation and some serious commitment from any participants. As it stands, I think I can muster enough troops to support it from this end, but in order to make it spectacular, I'm going to have to rely on you guys and any peripheral members/supporters to help.
In short, I was inspired to try and replicate cars from the
BTCC Touring Cars. It's well documented that I love these cars and this style of racing and that I am indelibly scarred about not being able to do so properly in the game. It's also well documented that I'm stubborn and pig-headed, so I went ahead and made the biggest fist I could of it
The conversation starts
HERE in the Clueless Outlaw garage, which includes extracts from the regulations for the BTCC. I've included the salient bits below:
- 300+bhp 2-litre turbo-charged direct-injection engine
- 6 speed sequential-shift gearbox
- Carbon clutch
- Suspension
- Flat floor
- Specified rear wing profile
- Stylised front
- Increased driver protection
- Front and rear-wheel drive, 975kg and 1000kg, respectively
- Dunlop: 245 x 650 x R18
- AP Racing specified brake package
- Cosworth Electronics specified ECU
I duly went about trying to find cars that I could install all the above parts on (or nearest approx), whilst in some way resembling cars that feature in the actual championship. I ended up with the below list, you can see the actual cars
HERE:
- The Ford Focus ST '06
- Honda CIVIC TYPE R '08
- Volkswagen Scirocco R '10
- BMW 135i Coupe '07
I then set about trying to coming up with some game specific regulations, jump
HERE for the conversation, I've copied the '
regs' below:
The Cars
- The Ford Focus ST '06
- Honda CIVIC TYPE R '08
- Volkswagen Scirocco R '10
- BMW 135i Coupe '07
The Restrictions
- Tyres: SS
- Power: 315BHP (exc Scirocco which must be limited to 300BHP)
- Weight: FWD - 1300kg RWD - 1400kg
- FWD Weight distribution: 54/46
Mandatory Parts
- Front, rear and flat-floor aero must be installed. Rear aero settings may be adjusted
- Racing Brakes
- ECU
- All adjustable parts (suspension, transmission and differential)

You may make BHP however you want, as long as you use the Sports ECU, this includes power limiting. Testing should be done in a private/online lobby, with the following restrictions:
Grip reduction:
Real
Visible Damage:
Off
Draft:
Real
Tyre/Fuel Wear:
Normal
ABS:
0-1
Hopefully I can upload a couple of videos later today (provided I can sort my IT) to show how close the racing is between these cars.
During the course of our testing and balancing of the cars it occurred to me that we could easily make an event out of these cars, but as per the start of the post, it will require commitment from a fair few people. My proposal is that instead of testing cars offline against the clock, we test against each other online. Fortune lead me to just 4 cars, which lead me to think about 4 races over 4 weeks at 4 different tracks. Ambitious, I know, and fraught with perils and pitfalls. The unformulated idea is that tuners would pick or be assigned one of the four cars, the tester likewise. Instead of submitting times, the testers will race in packs of 4. The winners will be decided as per a normal race championship, with added bonuses for quality driving cars. I had the idea that the tuner and tester could communicate during the week, in between races, allowing changes to be made to suit the forthcoming race. Almost like an actual driver and engineer. Tracks are undecided yet, we tested at Brands GP and the Ring, where all cars were well balanced. We tested at Spa too, where the Beemer dominated. Initially I didn't like this, but then I thought it might be nice to pick each track so that it benefits one particular car, to give them all a fair crack. Must be real world and must be the type of track you'd expect touring cars to feature at.
If there is sufficient interest, it'd be really cool to sort people, geographically, into quartets. I know that
@NEWDRIVER2 and
@danbojte will be willing to test/race and I'm sure I can find a fourth. Would there be enough interest to find another 4 or even 8?
Right, I'm sort of losing my place now, so I'll take a step back and leave the above for you folks to digest. I'll be back later, with strong coffee...
