The 5spd vs. 6spd debate will always be up in the air in terms of overall feel. However the 6spd is definitely stronger and recommended for turbo'd track abuse. Having never driven a 6-spd miata I can't comment on the feel. As long as it's not like my friends gateless integra, I think I'd be happy.

It's extremely notchy. And the strength thing is not entirely correct. The Mazdaspeed version of the 6-speed should be the strongest because it has cryo treated gears. The standard 6-speed not so much.

I think we'll just agree to disagree here. :)

You need to run harder! I can honestly say that the turbo miata has evolved since 2 or 3 years ago

Oh I beat on that thing, trust me. I forgot to mention all my canyon running and *cough*streetracing*cough*. :D

For his purpose, N/A is the way to go..

Agreed. 👍

So that's why you watched fast five on the opening night!

We need PSN to go back up. I miss running with everyone!

^ I know right, GT5 offline is so boring.

Just to keep things interesting, we should pick a track and see how fast we can get that Alfa around it.

Yeah I tried it with the Spec Miata and it seemed really big. Might be interesting if I edit the track and slim it down some. I'm going to try and make some more this weekend so maybe something will come along that is more suited for slower cars. Although Kart tracks work well in that regard.

Lol you guys just killed me with all the miata talk :dopey: I love it!!!! :D

As far as MY buying goes right now (trying not to get ahead of myself) the biggest thing for me is to find one with the sport package (damn you entroper).

I know since I'm going to college, it might seem that I'll be an occasional tracker, but the guys there do about an event every month. I intend to do more :) Sounds like you guys are both saying that turbo is the way to go if I want to do that. I've always preferred an N/A feel so my question is how much power can be pulled out of the stock engine and is it going to be too much for the engine (reliability wise) if I do take that route.

edit: track looks great :) you missed the apex on turn 5 though ;) and what was that line through the turn 13 sweeper? :dunce:

As far as the Sport package goes, do you see yourself replacing all of the suspension with aftermarket stuff at some point? If so, then I wouldn't worry too much about getting the sport package because you'll be replacing all the "sport" stuff anyway.

As far as turbo goes, depending on your location you can run 10-12 psi on the stock motor, which is good for 230-250whp. Also depends on what octane fuel you have available to you.

I do, but since I will be working on my mr2 to get it track capable for my first year, I don't know how long it will be before I can actually start work on the miata. If you guys think that the normal ls package (01) or base(99) is plenty fun and track competitive then I'll take your word for it :) I just don't want to be driving a "soft" miata for my first year on SCCA if you know what I mean....

Coolio, now answer my real question ;) How much can you get out of the engine keeping it N/a

That corner is really hard to figure out. I still haven't gotten it down perfect yet.

And I misunderstood your previous question.

N/A you're really not going to get much out of it. Avoid the intakes that put the cone filter right next to the exhaust. I recommend the FM Randal Cowl intake with a high flow filter. Exhaust you can do a header and full exhaust. I wouldn't worry about doing much more than that. Expect around 120-130whp normally.

Lol well that settles that, those are the first mods I'll probably do (along with suspension, tires, etc) but I'll definitely have to run a turbo at some point :)

Maybe I'll have to namechange on here again ;) Something like BB1800turbo? BB for baby blue of course :dopey:

Stig - the 99/00 sport package is nice since can be considered a summer car. If I recall correctly it doesn't have power steering or A/C. The later gen sport packages include the big brakes. From smallest to largest, 1.6 brakes>1.8 brakes> 1.8(01+) sport package.

When it comes to N/A mods, the hot ticket right now for a dead reliable n/a track car is going with a VVT 1.8 liter motor, JDM/EUDM "square top" intake manifold, BP5A intake came from the mazdaspeed miata(which can be bought from various vendors like 949racing or direct from mazdaspeed motorsports development), Aftermarket ECU like the Hydra or Megasquirt with VVTuner to hanle the VVT and remove the MAF, and the traditional E/H/I mods. The above could dynojet at 150whp.

Some reference cars for you:

Add some super fly suspension with wide wheels and tires first and you'll be on the way to glory.

:dopey: Those cars are AWESOME. So I've been doin some fun testing on gt5 for the last couple hours. Any ideas which one's are comparable? I'm runnin a 98 1.8rs (nb, j) cuz I don't have just a plain nb from 98. And also a 2000 1800 rs (nb). The 2000 is WAY faster than the 98....also it's pumpin out 161 hp :P bone stock with an oil change and engine rebuild....yeah I'm that bored :) Anyway, turbo told me there was a slight power bump in the 01 facelift and I was wondering if it really is THAT noticeable. Obviously stock, no miata is gonna pump out 161 hp (maybe on race gas, but I doubt it)

Turbo is right on with the NB2(01+) miatas. The exhaust manifold, the VVT head(which WILL give you better mid end power, but won't help with peak power with the proper ECU), and 10.0:1 compression ratio all contribute to the added power. It's not like it's much though... guess maybe 5hp?

Turbo - Right after you said that I looked to see if that's true. It seems that I haven't seen anyone with both VVT and the intake cam so you're right. I wonder where I got that idea from?

Turbo 2 - If fast five was bad I'm going to run you off the road next time I see you on PSN. lol I'm watching it in a bit. I'm trusting you, man!

EDIT :: I remember where I'm getting all this VVT from. VVT will help the mid-range on TURBO cars while improving spool at the same time.

Yeah the VVT intake cam is longer and has the VVT stuff on it. (see below) The VVT is really nice to have, especially on a turbo car. If you can tune it correctly.

Huh? We're talking about the Variable Valve Timing on the intake cam for 2001-05 non-Mazdaspeed Miata's. 👍

stig I can't help but laugh that you're moving to Michigan and the first thing you think of is buying a roadster. 👍
really really really good snows on 14" wheels and a hard-top are the first "mods" you should be looking for.

Does it snow there? lol. I live in NJ so as soon as there's any time of snow I don't go to classes. 👍

haha... Kettering is in Flint, MI... Flint is actually north of Detroit... some of Canada is farther south than Flint.

They're far enough inland that they do ok on snow fall... It's the 8 months of freezing your bum off in a rag-top that sucks.

Though I'm not saying you *cant* daily drive a roadster... A guy I work with now does it with an MR-S. But that's mid engine, he has -1 wheels with excellent snows, and complains all winter about the rag-top freezing him to death.
I worked with another guy who daily drove an NA all winter (and knew a guy @ RIT that daily drove an NB that was nicely built with a roll cage et'al) they were both only *happy* after they got the hard-shell to keep them warm. And even with snows the miata is so light in the back it's pretty hairy on hills, in the wind, or whenever you get a dumping deeper than 1".

-- You've been warned stig.
Winter around the great lakes is not to be taken lightly if you're not a rally driver. Or you didn't grow up here.

anyway... I'm still bored and stuck in Dallas for another night; going to pop across the street where I can drink and watch a hockey game.
The wedding they had at the hotel this afternoon did produce some nice cars. Saw a LOUD Charger SRT8 in purple w/black striping, a hot ass orange ZR1, a silver 2010 GTR, and a black Bentley Speed GT. Odd when the GTR was the tamest of the bunch.
