Formula One Eni Magyar Nagydij 2011

It occurs to me as I watch qualifying that the 107% rule isn't quite apples to apples. The frontrunners setting the times are usually (unless Massa needs help) on the harder, slower compound, but the backmarkets are usually on the softer, grippier one. If the comparison of the frontrunners to the backmarkers was on the same tire, then HRT & co. would really be outside the 107% cutoff...

The 107% rule isn't a rule that is designed to eliminate cars that are over 107% from the race, its a rule that gives the stewards and opportunity to remove really slow cars from racing. Such as HRT in the first race of the season. It's not strictly enforced at all.

Mark Webber said he was dumbfounded as to Vettel's time. I think RBR may have taken a shave of performance from his car to prevent him beating Vettel, may have gone a little too far.

As I have said before I know people who have been in the industry, they say it happens more than we think.

And I say nothing but a conspiracy. If they hate Webber so much and want to make Vettel look good, then why don't they get rid of Webber and bring in Buemi or Alguesuari? Mateschitz wants to keep Webber on.

Bollocks.

They're both still young. No point sending either of them to the top team yet. Besides which Webber is at least still among the top 6. It could be much worse :dunce:

Some would say that, and some would say he is just a wise driver not to throw away points with uneccessary contact. Sometimes its not all about defending your position every corner, defending loses you time to whoever else is around.
Kobayashi has the same approach - he more often than not concedes positions to cars that are far, far faster and doesn't waste time trying to defend from the inevitable. But when he is on pace or faster, he will defend as hard as anyone.
Its not neccessarily being afraid, but a different approach to racing.

It usually works for Button. However, in some recent races being crowded out has got him behind a slower car and cost him dearly. Petrov at the Nurburgring for example. He had a great start but on the outside of turn one he could do nothing, and once he gets stuck behind a slower car his race is ruined and he has no chance of a podium never mind a win. Though in that case it wouldn't have mattered due to his Hydraulics problem, the problem still persists. He got crowded out last year here aswell and lost many places as they went 3 wide into turn 1.

Well, Vettel is on pole and Mark is 6th. If they were only a place or 2 behind, I'd just say Vettel got a better lap in, but no, 5 places behind is a bit more than Vettel getting the upper hand, and especially considering Mark had been fairly quicker than Vettel the past 2 races, its not impossible. Plus, Mark is the main challenger for the title right now.

I'm not debating whether or not Webber deserves to be at RBR (he does imo). I was simply stating reasons why RBR wouldn't "shave some performance off" as Alex suggested.

At least someone can see why I might suggest it. Pole at Silvers and Nurb, then 6 tenths slower? Makes no sense, especially seeing as he didn't make a mistake.

You could say the same thing about Vettel. How many poles this season, then has two off-ish races.

Except Vettel is the clear #1 at RBR, and it would make more sense for it to happen to Webber after he beat Vettel 2 qualis in a row. Just to ensure that it doesn't happen again. All it takes is a couple of clicks more or less in a setup parameter for a tenth or two.

Well, on this occasion I must be wrong, but I said it at first because Webber stated he had no idea where the 6 tenths were from. :irked:

Button was a second of Hamilton's qualifying pace last race. I didn't hear anyone stating foul play there. I know he said he wasn't entirely happy with the car but still. I know people are looking for reasons to explain why Mark has been lacking in pace at times this season, but common sense suggests the team aren't sabotaging his car as it is little to no benefit to them.

Don't get me wrong man I'm a Vettel fan 100%, I was just bringing up a possibility which people inside F1 had mentioned to me before :) 👍

Amazingly Massa beat Alonso, Hamilton just missed out on pole but still had an excellent session with Button, Di Resta 11th, Trulli found some good pace in the Lotus.

You know, I saw the pitcrew working on Vettel's DRS in the pitlane. Wonder why not Webber as well, or maybe I mistook them, and Webber's DRS was being tinkered with.

Was that at the same time as when Adrian Newey was standing, looking at the rear wing with a look of concern?

That's one hell of a prank if it's fake. If he's in critical condition then I think it's pretty certain he won't be racing, surprised it needs deliberation.

EDIT: It's disappeared. ???
