Gran Turismo 7 Custom Race thread

I find that nearly every time I set up a custom race, I either sit at the front and get bored lapping alone, or 1-3 cars at the front take off and are never seen again until the checkered flag appears next to their name a minute before anyone else's.

I set up a Gr.4 race, forget the track, with BOP on and boost set to weak, Professional difficulty. Somehow the lead two AI cars finished more than 40 seconds ahead of everyone else. Those two were close, the rest of the AI cars were decently close for an hour of racing, but there was a huge gap between those leading two and the rest of the cars. Nobody needed to pit. And I do expect some spread after an hour, of course. But this just feels like two of the cars cheated and left the rest behind. The real race was for third and below.

I just don't understand how to keep things relatively balanced without picking the cars myself. Even with the game's settings that are designed to keep the racing closer, I run into very unbalanced cars and/or AI.
That sometimes happens...but is it really a problem, when there are two cars far ahead, as long the battle for 3rd to tenth place is tight and challenging and you are right in the middle of it?

Sometimes that even happens with coustom races when you pick the cars yourself(although not so often), but as long the race is challenging and tight, I don't care...

I finished like 12th anyway, the lead 2 cars being entirely gone didn't matter a lot. I'd still like a shot at winning though, instead of needing to accept that 3rd is essentially 1st for the race. It feels like I'm making excuses for myself, even if I'm just ignoring unbalanced AI. Not that I had to do that when I wasn't exactly close to 3rd anyway...

Ran a 10-lapper at Monza with the Group C cars. I took the lead on lap 8 when the leader in a Tomahawk got caught up in traffic. It seemed that the AI was faster today.

Ran a 10-lapper at Daytona road course with the Group C cars. Passed the leader on lap 8. Won by a shade over 5 seconds. Good fun.

Ran a 10-lap custom race at Spa with the Group C cars. Running the 787B, took the lead on lap 6, then trying for some hero laps, I made a few blunders. I fell back to 9th. I got the lead back on the last lap and won by 2 seconds.

Been trying to get similar GT3-GT4 multi-class racing like I get in ACC.
Experimenting with 5-minute, 10 GT3, 10 GT4/Gr.4(Vantage, 2 Cayman, 2 M4, Mustang, 2 Supra, 650S, SLS). This time, BOP on. I don’t trust it, but my results definitely shocked me.
Some silly behaviour by the AI at some points in both games, but GT7 seem way more improved than when the game debuted. Physics in ACC determine pace. Tyre temps and steering angle trajectory are more pronounced.

Three races at The Glen, Bathurst and Monza. My biggest surprise were the GT7 AI at Bathurst. For the AI to go full speed through The Cutting to The Dipper. Usually, the AI touch the brakes through Reid and Sulman. Didn’t happen. They kept pace and even pulled away from me. The Cayman at Bathurst makes a dumb unpredictable braking application at the grate. Other than that, the split times show AI pulling away. Good stuff.

A question for the experienced Custom Racers here:

Do you tune every car in the race or just let the AI run on the stock settings?

Thanks.

I tune...when it comes to one make races(I have a grid for Golf GTIs Mk1 and for BMWs M3/M3 evo '89) I give them racing hard tires and select a PP I am aiming for(for example 635 for the BMWs and 540 for thr GTIs), and then tune every car, so they reach that selected PP(within a variety of +/- 1point).
I try to use different tunes and set ups for every car, so that they don't behave exactly the same on any track and I get some variety in the results(but I think there also people here, that prefer to give them all the same set ups...) and I also see which tunes work better and which don't...

I tune every car of the same model identical. Differtn cars on the grid will vary the PP. I’ll spread them around randomly. The main thing for me is, I run all cars, including my own car, with RH tyres.

I’ve run stock road cars to replicate Gran Turismo 1 & 2 grids of six cars. Example: Viper ‘02, NSX ‘92, ZR-1 ‘89, R33 Skyline, R32 Skyline, Supra ‘97. The Viper and NSX run away. ZR-1, R33 and Supra are a bit quicker than the R32. Only two laps for those, as the outcome is pretty set when the green lights up.

Gentlemen, thanks for the insight. It’s much appreciated.

I’m getting closer to a full Group C grid,(12 as of now). I started a ‘60’s and ‘70’s Trans-Am grid today. I bought four Challengers and two ‘69 Corvettes. I tuned them as close to each other as possible. I have one ‘69 Z-28 and I’ll get three more tomorrow.

I have a Trans Am Grid with 5 Mach1 Mustangs, 5 Pontiac TransAms, 5Camaros and 5 Challengers...I tuned them pretty close to each other, but the Mach1s ant the Pontiacs were dominating... (wich reminds me, because i wanted to swap the TransAms for the GTOs

I picked up 3 more Z-28’s and tuned them. I also found an extra Boss 429 in the garage and tuned it, too.

So, now I’m sitting on 4 Challengers, 4 Z-28’s, 2 Corvettes, and 2 Boss 429’s. It’s getting there. I’m plan to get the Mach 1’s, another 2 Corvettes, a few GTO’s, and a few Super Bees.

For anyone interested, I posted some specs of the Gr.A RS500 in the tuning thread.
Cam across some specs for the Gr.A ATCC R32 https://www.whichcar.com.au/features/aussie-legends-group-a-r32-skyline-gt-r
Heavy to begin with, Godzilla’s racing weight was increased from 1350kg to 1500kg as CAMS tried – unsuccessfully – to rein in the ATCC-devouring monster. Following intensive development and refinement, the red rockets were producing 650 horsepower (485kW) in race trim – later reduced to 620 – and, with the boost wound up, 700bhp (520kW) for qualifying, with drive to the four wheels controlled by what was then sophisticated computer management.
I‘ve had mine tuned to Calsonic R32 specs at 550hp/1260kg, as per NISMO Global specs. Big difference.

Has anyone set up a BTCC/Group A grid using 80's and 90's cars? Which cars did you use and what are your specs for equal racing?
Currently I'm using the Trueno/Levin, 88 Supra, 84 Skyline, 88 Silvia, 89 M3/M3 Evo, and the Alfa DTM

I added the RX-7 FC, as we don’t have the SA22 model. The Civic TC to fill for the Vauxhall Astra. Also, the ‘83 GTI. Can’t recall the PP settings for those. This site http://touringcarracing.net/Pages/1983 Cars.html can give you an idea of where to tune.

Found another Boss 429 in the garage and also a Mach 1 that I forgot I had. I tuned them both and ran a 10-lapper at Willow Springs.

Batschisane52, I see your point about the Mach 1. The car handles great. I'm looking forward to getting a few more of them.

Now with BMW M2 in new update it will be great candidate for TCR BMW car instead of M4 group 4 :)
My thoughts exactly. It’s going to be my first time buying multiple cars to fill a grid. Any pointers? How to manipulate which tyres the AI would use?

Everything seems the same.

Edit: Did a few GR.A races and the AI are pretty quick around the circuit.

Ran a custom race at Road Atlanta. A 10-lapper with my Trans Am grid. Good fun, using a Mach 1, (starting form the back), won by a shade over 3 seconds.
