Will GT5 and 6's Premium looks "standard" compared to GTS's premiums? That is something I worry about.
More brainwashing! All assets in GTS should be of the same quality. You have already accepted that they won't and your worry is how bad the sub standard content will look. Amazing!
 
Please explain. I thought 64bit and 32bit mostly refers to operating systems and/or apps and how they communicate with the CPU ?

What do you mean by 64-bit cars ? Never saw it used in this contest.

Considering the allusion to Standards, I'm guessing @05XR8 is making a reference to the sixth-generation of consoles, from which they all came from. Of course, the PS2 was a 128-bit system, not a 64, so that doesn't help. :P

I guess he's referring to the PS2-era cars, but the PS2 was 128-bit.
 
To be fair, when you think about how much time it would take to make premium models of all the cars. It was probably more sensible to smooth out the polygons of the standard cars, rather than recreating each one.
 
The fact Polyphony was able to take 7-8 year old car models, and upscale them to where they nearly blend in, in GT5, is a testament to Polyphony's excellent technical workmanship. Albeit, when you zoom in on the cars you can notice.

Why? They're still not good enough for PS4, they have no interiors. They're going to have to make premiums eventually or cut the cars entirely, why not just quit beating around the bush and make them?

It's not like having a handful more upgraded standards in the game was make or break for anyone buying it.

I meant standard cars on the Playstation 3. Having standard cars on the Playstation 4 would be totally unacceptable.

This is true IMO, but it also speaks to the diminishing returns you have from upping the polygon count in car modelling. Another issue altogether but it's why I also think it's a mistake to go with a 250k poly count in game as DriveClub did because it'll cost you frame rates and car count in exchange for details that almost no one will notice until it comes to the replay. Project Cars went with 80k and I don't recall any fans of the game ever complaining about the way the cars looked because they were so focused on the gameplay. Having said that, I think if every standard looked like a Ruf Yellowbird and came with a new, authentic (not generic) interior, equal in quality to full premiums, I think all but the most hardcore fans could live with that.

In the bigger picture though, there has to be severely diminishing returns in chewing up precious resources (time and money) in buffing up old assets. To create interiors and polish up several hundred cars would be a herculean task. There are nearly as many polys inside the car as there are outside IIRC, so the combined effort of modelling the interior and fixing up the exterior work might be akin to a half a car. Would you really give up say 100 brand new cars to the series, in order to have the ability to drive 200 cars you have driven for 10 years or more? Do you think that would be a tradeoff that potential customers would appreciate? What do you think would sell better, 200 brand new, unique cars in GT7 or 100 brand new unique cars + 200 standards brought to pseudo-premium levels?

The best bet is to throw away the duplicates, model premium models for community most requested cars (supra, m3, etc.), introduce a livery editor for players to make those duplicates themselves if so they wish. Or indeed turn to outsourcing like every other developer (racing and other genres) does, there is a point when developing everything in-house becomes unreasonable and overly expensive. Driveclub, Forza, NFS, The Crew all used the service of outsourced modellers and nobody cares because they all look good. It's not like they're some amateurs, they probably have 10-15 yrs of modelling experience under their belt, no different to polyphony.

It would take the same amount of time to "smooth out the poygons" on standards since standards are unusable as a moddeling platform for premiums. When PD says that they converted a standard to a premium that doesn't mean that they doubled the polys and updated the textures, that means they made a premium model from scratch.

Why not? I don't really see a reason why not having an interior is not good enough for PS4 compared with say the previous generation. In any case, it's most likely if you don't want to use them you won't have to.

Most shots certainly have a general look of the ring except the already identified Brands corner, but finding exact matches are not easy so far.
 
I think lighting in 5 is wayyy better then 6, most obvious reason is the square sun in GT6. Photomode was also so much better in 5... I miss Kyoto :indiff:

I agree, the Photo travel mode in GT5 is way better than in GT6, the only main flaw though is that you can't use Standard cars in them. And with the numerous destinations in the game (my favorite Photo travel location in the game has to be the one located in what would be PD's proposed karting track in Piazza del Campo in Siena, Italy).

Lighting wise, GT6 had too much glare. Especially when you come out of the tunnel in the High Speed Ring.

Does it sound crazy, if PD were to buffer up and polish GT1 and GT2 models? (that haven't been since remade)
Say they can make them look sorta almost like standards, polish the standards some more, and release them all, with a car count nearing 2,000? Does that sound crazy, or stupid, or delightful?

They may not look as pleasant as you think on PS4 and most of it are unnecessary duplicates. Even then the number of cars won't top 2000, rather 1500-1700 cars, but without unnecessary duplicates, it's rather around 1250-1300 cars.

Counted the way GT counts them, of course. So the highest number possible.

PD needs to bring back the photo locations that were in GT4 IMO.

In this day and age it isn't about poly count anymore, it's about texturing and lighting. You'd be amazed how much jaggy-ness can be hidden through clever texture and reflection work.

The trouble with standard/PS2-and-earlier-era cars is that most of their wireframes are triangle-based, which doesn't play well with scaling or tesselation models, and also isn't as easy to "polish" or edit beyond the initial model. That's why total rebuilds are necessary for conversions, and why standard/PS2 models have no place in modern GT games - they're becoming less and less reusable and and more and more difficult to maintain.

Can you explain more about adoptive tesselation, I've heard of it in the trailers but have no idea what it means

The closer you get to a model, the more detailed it gets.

You can easily notice it with the Mini VGT and a few other cars. There was a list of cars with that feature.
