FREAKIN' SWEET

Okay, Alex is not only an inspirational sportsman, a great driver and an awesome ambassador for the BMW brand.. but he's also such a nice bloke. Honestly, I was questioning the expense involved in going to the 24 at Spa this year but this totally makes it worthwhile. Genuinely I think Alex is awesome, and when I watch clips like that below it leaves me with a lump in my throat and a small tear in my eye... especially the WTCC win clip.

Look what showed up at VLN pre-season testing. Unfortunately, from what I can gather, the chances of it actually racing are slim, as it may not get an exemption to run in the XP classes, and wasn't produced in large enough numbers to qualify for Group H.

Confirmation today that the British GT and BRDC F4 Championship Media Day will be held at Brands Hatch on Wednesday 25th March. I'll be there, is anyone else likely to attend?

Ha, I remember him dominating in the Wilkinson sword Lamborghini
I have a feeling that you're referring to the Gallardo, but you just sent me on a nostalgia trip to the old Nations Cup days with the Diablos, Ferrari 550, the completely against the rules but still awesome Monaro 427s and of course Greg Crick's silver and blue Viper.

FIA Confirms GT World Cup for 2015

Epic!

The FIA announced today that an end-of-season GT World Cup will be held in Macau on Nov. 19-22.

Welp, so much for that idea.

But if Macau is the only one willing to field it, then I'd rather they do that than not do it at all. If anything, it will be a bit of a leveling field, since very little GT3 racing takes place on street circuits. And if you're going to do it on a street course, Macau is certainly the one I'd pick.

I now suddenly want to see someone develop a GT3 series with open tire competition (on a larger scale and broader market than GT300 and VLN). I'd love to see Yokohama, Michelin, Dunlop, and Pirelli duke it out. Maybe Avon, Hankook and Continental, too, if they could field competitive rubber. Falken could enter their works effort as well.

Granted I can only imagine that BOPing the cars and the tires would be a nightmare, but it just seems like every series is a spec tire these days and the few that allow open competition seem to be dominated by one brand more or less. I feel like the GT3 format has enough brands who already have rubber to start from that it could be a better show than ACO GT and Prototype Racing.

Well if they just used stock FIA BoP for the cars it could probably work. I'm so tired of "spec tires".

There would have to be rules or regulations in place to prevent one tire from being too dominant so the series doesn't turn into every other "open" tire series out there. If a particular brand starts to look too dominant, they would have to develop a new tire or, alternatively, all entrants using that tire would receive a BOP hit of some sort.

Using those kinds of rules might be intriguing since teams may avoid jumping on any one particular brand in the event that that brand is dominant and thus they get penalized. Another option would just be to assign a brand of tire to a particular model or models of car and then using that as the BOP (ex: BMW's run Dunlops, Mercedes run Yokohama, Bentley's run Dunlops, Mclaren's run Michelins, etc).

Of course, doing that might make the whole point of open tire competition rather moot. Hmmm.

Cost cap the tyres so the manufacturers can't charge more than a agreed fee for the tyres.

That should stop really expensive development.

Changes to the Spa 24

SRO and the Royal Automobile Club of Belgium (RACB) are set to announce new and revised safety measures to come into action for this year’s Spa 24 Hours.

These will include:

A test for bronze and young silver categorised drivers;
A track familiarisation ‘walk’ and briefing to be carried out during race week;
The current test session for Bronze ranked drivers will be extended to all Silver ranked drivers and to any higher ranked drivers without experience of the track.

BMW Marc VDS Racing team boss Bas Leinders will join the SRO team and RACB stewards to evaluate these sessions with Jean Marc Gounon joining the roster of Race Control Officials.

The SRO and RACB partnership is also considering a new full course yellow procedure which could see cars being slowed to 80kph. ‘Black box’ recorders supplied by the FIA Institute are also set to be a mandatory feature of the GT3 cars.
The moves come after a troubled 2014 race which saw several serious accidents and injury to Ferrari driver Marcus Mahy. The British racer has since gone on to recover from serious head and neck injuries.

The new set of measures sit alongside those announced last October as part of the adoption by SRO of the Sean Edwards Foundation’s SET test.

The future of the Spa 24 Hours is also set to be bolstered further by announcements of the continued partnership between the RACB (Royal Automobile Club of Belgium) and SRO (Stephane Ratel Organisation) as DSC understands that an agreement has been reached for their collaboration to continue until 2018.

That's quite the driver lineup they have there there. My bet is on the 2nd Phoenix car for overall victory on the N24.

I've seen his car for the Blancpain Sprint Series events, but wonder how it will be for the Spa 24H. Are the other 2-3 drivers going to use his specialized car?
