GT4 WRS Week 5: "Big Apple with a side of rice"

Finally got a chance to spend some quality time with week 5. Thought I had a semi-decent time (at least for the mere mortals of racing in D3). Then I checked the current leaderboard. Darn, shouldn't have done that.

27.930
1'04.841

D3 racer with DFP.

SNAP!

I dont believe it, im losing to a rug.

Oh no wait, that was the genie in Aladdin.

I dont believe it, im losing to a girl.

Thats it, thats me. Well done Koly!!!

I have seen a 27.290 and 1'03.379, but i couldnt get thru the right after the round about without slightly grazing my paint on the wall...

Oh well...... plenty more time.... i hope.

Not enjoying this one.
Its too close.

Thanx Chips, you have helped a great deal.

And thanx Cervical Fertility Modulator, you have given me headaches. :grumpy:

:) 👍

If you've seen them, you can reproduce them ... so I fully expect tight competition from you, buster!

I also have a tendency to run fast sectors and lose it all in the last :( So maybe that's you streaking up behind in in y rear-view?

It's far from over, but to give you something to chase, I'm pretty darn sure that I can break into the 1'02's ...

Ha! I'm getting the hang of this DFP, and I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm losing time due to driving on the kids' 13" TV/VCR combo... :^) Driving on the "big" TV with some of the setups shared on this forum (BIG THANKS FOR THAT!!) I've been able to get down to:

T1 27.335
T2 1:03.412

I think that I've been using too much brake, spring, and running too low. Amazing reduction in braking distance now compared to my original feeble attempts at tuning. I wish there were some sort of brake lockup meter instead of that useless G-load meter.

One thing I don't understand is the lack of tuning response from front to rear roll stiffness changes. On my racecar, boosting the rear spring rates increases oversteer, however no matter how ridiculously rear biased I make this car, I can't get the rear out (and I drive FWD so I know in the real world how to induce drift with that layout).

Even tried toe out in the rear. BTW, has I'm sure it's been covered somewhere else, but which is out and which is in? Is + out and - in?

Later,

Now if i could only figure out how small fryz is getting these times using the EXACT SAME SETUP I AM, (Thanx again chippers) then i would be happy.

That's another thing about setups I'm afraid. A perfect setup for one person doesn't always mean it's a perfect setup for all.

And there goes my continued slide down the D3 leaderboard. Sigh. I'm going away this weekend so I won't be able to improve much beyond what I end up doing tonight, so I guess I'll drag in the caffeine tonight.

But no, that's defeatist! The father/son Team Wheels will prevail this week (if only to beat JMitch17 for the first time).

I'm curious about one thing, though. My son and I were swapping laps last night and he's running with only turbo stage 2 vice my stage 3. Before I sent him off to bed and ran another 45 minutes and shaved a couple of seconds off, he was getting very similar lap times as myself. I was surprised that the extra 80 or so horsepower that stage 3 gives isn't making that much of a difference in straight line speed (and more importantly, lap time). Or am I revealing how terribly awful our setups are?

Well, I've got time so I'm going to race with you guys. In fact I started last night with the Qualifyer and with this Race. Fun combos on both!

Just a few notes on things:
First of all, I attended the Drunken Rodeo Clown Driving School and graduated with honors (just a disclaimer on anything I post about settings). I just hate to use the brakes until I absolutely have to (I prefer the panic technique). Trail braking?!?! yeah right...

In this race I've been in the mid 27s through T1 and upper 1'03s through T2. I make 177mph(284kph) at the end of the straight and if I can get my corner exit correct I may squeeze another mph or two out of it.

My car is fully upgraded and tranny tricked and all that good stuff. (Time for an oil change).

Last night I went to the 1000m test track to find setups and shift points for straight line acceleration. (I prefer to stand on the throttle all the time, so TCS is my friend... sometimes). TCS at 5 was a full 0.3s faster than TCS at 0. (Mostly because this is a standing start test).

BIG EDIT!!! (I had the revs wrong)
I also tested for shifting points to find what happens when shifting at different rpms. Shifting at 500 to 7500 rpm above redline was consistently faster by at least 0.1s and sometimes 0.2s (sorry for not having the rpm numbers, this is from memory). I believe the redline is at 6000rpm, so shifting at 6750 was quicker. I tried nearer the rev limiter (7000), but it made no difference. With some practice I was able to hit the shift point by listening to the sound. I didn't touch individual gear settings... yet.

Suspension settings seem to be: softer shocks, medium to stiff springs, higher ride height (curb jumping), and a bit of added camber.

LSD went 10, 35, (I don't remember decel).

Sorry I don't have exact numbers on some of this. It's lunch time at work and my memory isn't what it used to be.

Stupid question .... LSD?
LSD = Limited Slip Differential
This is a part that goes inside the rear end to make your car handle, accelerate and decelerate better.

On a side note, I will not have internet for up to a week or so after today.
Good luck with all of the racing!

Thanks for the clarification. I'll start playing with THAT ball of wax .... sometime ... :nervous:

Good luck with the move!

There are 3 LSD settings:
- Initial
- Accel
- Decel

They are defined on the scrolling bar at the bottom of the screen in the settings area.

Boy have I got some catching up to do!

Only really had half an evening and about an hour so far today with this,my old 39003 model ps2 sucummed to the dreaded gt4 plague tuesday night, and is still on life-support!
Had to get a slimline on wed after (Ahhhh!, ain't they small and cute?)',but couldn't play last night or earlier today coz of pool-league and work commitments.......Boo Hoo!
Was still able to scan about and pick up settings, chat etc so picked up some good settings off hot, holl, and s_f (thanx guys)

T1 27.920
T2 1,04.853

Not good, but not too bad either!

Improved .8 at the line

T1: 27.468 (more than .1 slower, damn)
T2: 1'03.420 (.8 up)

Using a setup similar (I think) to h0tb0i
Need to improve, can't let koly beat me :sly: Stop being so fast girl, you're scaring the hell out of me :) 👍

Slight improvements

T1 27.694
T2 1,04.282

Nice times the rest of ya! 👍

Now all i have to do is, sort out the car being too twitchy on the brakes into the double-apex left at the end of the straight, and not screwing up the L/L/R/L complex onto the back straight.

at least i have the T2 plus section more or less sussed! Crossing the line at well over 150mph(240kph) so must be getting the final three corner's right.

But still lots to improve! :banghead:

auto back to TWELVE?

I thought th tranny trick was auto to right, final to right, auto the left, then set final setting to preferred amount.

My wife and oldest son (I Don't Know, the junior member of WRS Team Wheels) came out and joined me for lunch today. We were discussing that LLRL combo and broke out napkins and pens and discussed lines. We agreed on what we think is the best line, at least I know I got my best time using it last night. Now to refine it tonight!

But definitely kudos out to all, I seem to be several seconds behind so far. Gotta get the lead out!

ok, made some improvements (using setup that i made, similar to small fryz, exept gears are at auto 14, TCS 3 or 4)

T1 27.006 (had 26.91x)
T2 1'01.968 (had 1'01.894 but couldnt bring it home)

improved time by .121 i dont think that tranny trick works small fryz, i tried it, no good. and TCS at 1 is too low for me.

It's good to share your obsessions with all the family, causes less strife! lol
(except when there is only one ps2 set-up in the house!)

Best i can do at the minute is

T1 27.629

T2 1,03.951

Though LOTS to improve,

@ CFM or any other with real-deal confirmation

Can we cut the curbs on the 90 deg corners and the 2nd left in the L/L/R/L complex? ie ALL four on the curbs! As long as you don't hit a wall, have 4 off on the left of the rumble strip at the roundabout/island, and don't go down pit lane?
Is ALL else allowed?

If so i think i can shave about another 1-1 1/5 seconds off T2 (Maybe?)

@Neil from my understanding from earlier in posts, with the exception of those 2 areas you talked about, all is fair game.

That's what i thought.

just want to get it right.

👍

T1: 27.364
T2: 1'03.361

And I *KNOW* I can get sub-1'03 ... I'll be very disappointed if I can't get it.

ok guys, the tranny trick works both ways, the way i posted it, was how i did it. auto to left or auto to right makes no difference.

Just at least try them before you knock them ok.

update
T1 26.985
T2 1'02.021

but bet my time by .136 at the line with a fluky finish. unchanged setup DF 30/30 though, BB 3/3.

Sorry guys I haven't been racing in the past few races but now I'm into GT4 once again so I will be competing in this event.

Yeah, after a great first week you disappeared ... been wondering where you were at. Of course, I'm not struck with the idea of stuffing Div3 with people faster than me, but maybe you'll get promoted soon :P

UPDATE! YESYESYES!
T1: 27.329
T2: 1'02.831
YESYESYESYES! :irishjig:

OMG!! After 2 oil changes and a chassis straighten ( 700km worth of laps:crazy: ) I thought I was getting close to the pace, Nat well done 👍, thats a very good time. Back to the drawing board for me  .
After reading some of the set up and tuning tips here and there, I thought low and stiff would be the way to go if you stayed off the kerbs, alas that didnt seem to work and I find it seems better higher and softer, also ive tried not to overdrive the thing thru the corners, trying to hold steady corner speed and not jumping on the throttle a smidge to early, can make a lot of difference.
Anyway here are my updated Sector times :
T1 - 27.431
T2 - 1.03.682

Steve
