Also, when you pause it to compare directly it's really hard to tell whether the GT5 track really looks that much better or if it is just that GT5 runs at a much higher resolution than GT4.

It's shots like this that really show how poor the textures are in 5. I know it has YT compression + jpeg compression but really:

Really poor. Even if I was still playing GT5 I wouldn't pay to download this.

Only the textures on the background hills really look that bad, the asphalt and grass textures have a nice depth to them (they really don't look as blurry as in your picture), like on all the (proper made) tracks in GT5 (Tsukuba, Le Mans, Fuji etc.).

256 Mb just is not enough.

All this Spa picture proves is there is no "Premium" or "standard" tracks, its got not so good background textures as well and I'd also like to point out that actually all the real life tracks in GT5 have low quality background textures. I'm off to bed now, hopefully, this debate about background textures is done by the morning.

Nordschliefe and Spa are premium :)

How does that make any sense in the context of your previous post?

Are you sure?

Yes but importantly that poor texture isn't visible when you're driving and I don't remember any bad textures that stood out to me on Spa, it looks great. The poor textures jumped right out at me on Motegi though.

Well 256 Mb is enough for what GT5 currently offers but clearly it is also the bottle neck of the whole system. If GT5 had more RAM you could more easily snap higher resolution textures in without excessive optimisation what textures should be large and what not. So I think problem with motegi could have been fixed with more RAM or more time to grind more visual quality out of the current specs.

GT5 Textures are really poor. Even the tarmac textures are. And most tracks have just flat green blury grass textures. Except for some tracks. But it's not really to blame on PD. It's just the PS3's Power :D If the game was running on 720p and 30fps the textures could look way better. But to keep everything on 60fps+the 1080p they have to do trade offs. Let's hope Sony gives the PS4 enough Memory :)

I'm sure you're right, but there are massive differences between tracks that cannot be explained by hardware limitations.
Some tracks look so last gen compared with others. There is no technical reason why all the other tracks could not be at the quality of the best (Nurburgring). Laguna Seca is a horrid version of a brilliant track, with low levels of detail in everything. Even the gt3 version looks way nicer because of the sunset lighting.

I'm sure, like many others, I had hoped these tracks would be fixed over time, but that doesn't look likely now, does it?

If they can model Nordschliefe and Spa without these texture issues there is no reason why Motegi couldn't be, that I can see.

So again, how does this make any sense? You comment that 256Mb is not enough, then say the reason Nordschliefe and Spa look better is because they're "premium"? Are they not restricted by the RAM then?

Yes it's right that the Premium tracks look better than the old ones. The Nürburgring, Monza , Spa etc. also include poor textures, there isn't actual grass or natural looking textures. It's more like the same texture over and over again. The Nürburgring looks better than the old GT tracks which they just upscaled such as Deep Forest, Laguna Seca etc. But still the textures are extremely poor if you watch them. Suzuka, Fuji, and Eiger doing it better because you can actually see there is grass and flowers such as in real life. It gives you a better sense of speed because the moving objects and a more natural look. Other racing games such as Forza 4 and Shift 2 do also have alot of grass and flowers and not only blury flat textures over and over again. But the overall graphics are lower in resolution and details which allows them to do. But what I find really poor is that the textures on Trail Mountain and Deep Forest and soooo bad. And also same over same. If you look at the Rocks you passing, it's the same Rock every few Meters. The same for the Tunnel on Trail Mountain. It's like every 10 Meters the same Texture. Which makes it look really artificial and unreal. I hope PD fixes the Standart tracks. Because they look really awful...

@DonZonda I so agree with you. That's why I love playing Forza 4 a lot. Not only because it has cars, but because its scenery it looks better. I also love GT5's Eiger track as well, because the grass and flowers actually has life and movement in them. The next problem is GT5's trees and water don't move period. They make the cars look good but not the tracks? That's just sad.

GT6's scenery better look good, especially if its on the PS3. Have more imagination for the GT classic tracks too btw.

Tracks like : Nurburgring , La Sharte, High speed ring, Monza , Spa, Suzuka, Fuji, Eiger, Rome, Madrid, Tsucuba look very good in GT5. but track like: Grand valley, Laguna Seca, TM circuit, Deep forest look bad and need to be remade for GT6
