I agree with SrD Racing, the preorder McLaren is crap

Not only does it have a lame paint job that offends a purist like me who does not want a livery editor in the game for that very reason, paint jobs and colors that are not true to the real cars, its not even the car in it's original right out of the factory specs.

I don't want my first experience with the F1 in GT5 to be flawed. This 'stealth' McLaren will be lighter and will have more horsepower then the "real" car. Basically your first experience with the mighty McLaren F1 will be counterfeit.

I'll cash in my preorder and get the car, but if there is more 'stealth' mclarens in the game to be had I will sell it on Day 1. Otherwise I will keep it for the purpose of collecting but it will be months before it gets any miles, well after I've gotten the "REAL" F1 and have driven it in it's true specs and true factory colors.

Seriously? So do you drive every single car in the game in it's stock specs? You know, since it's the purist way? And how is a livery editor against that either? Race cars are inherently less pure because they have some paint or vinyls on them?

You talk like you'll somehow be forced to drive this car. It's amazing people would be offended at PD offering a tuned vision of a car in their eyes, especially considering the normal version is also in the game. I guess the FTO LM, and all the other PD-created cars are somehow offensive too. Wow.
 
There is no one right way to play the game. Some people will enjoy it for it's RPG like elements and follow the motorsport career path from the bottom to the top, and others will collect cars as fast as they can so that they can get into the online game or into photomode as quickly as possible. I have my own preferred way to play GT, but that doesn't make someone else's preferred play style invalid. Not to my mind, anyhow.

Agreed, it just seems a bit overkill to refer to the car as crap and write off huge swaths of creativity-fostering features as "unpurist".

It'd be counterfeit if they lightened the car, increased the horsepower, and called it the "normal" F1. There's no attempts to pass it off as the "real thing", so I don't see what the fuss is with PD having their own little shot at creative license with what is one of the most important cars in the past 25 years (and arguably even the history of cars, period).

One is a P.O.S. gimmick advertisement from GameStop that we've seen in all other games this generation.

And thats bad because...? And why is wrong that its Gamestop doing it? Would that make Best buy and Amazon.com just as guilty by your definition?

It is easy to obtain and you will have it as soon as GT5 is in your PS3. I have little respect for that car.

Can't the same be said be said about the cars you'll be able to transfer from GT PSP? Its not as if its been said that you'll be able to use all your pre-order cars in GT mode so I still don't see the problem.

Especially when you have the choice of simply not using it. You don't want anything to do with it fine but don't take away what someone else might want.

Agreed, especially since its clearly not the first to have had this. Its funny how its only the GT's tuned Mclaren getting the heat when there is also a tuned Mercedes SLS and lets not forget the Ford GT, which sports similar colors in GT5P.

So, because it's lighter & will have more horsepower than the F1, it's a counterfeit?

Damn, I hope you never drive a F1 LM before the original F1, then. Wouldn't want to spoil your first experience with an even faster F1.

This is turning into a elementary school yard battle: "You're stealth McLaren is stupid." "No it's not" "Yes it is." Sounds like "You're dad is stupid" "No he's not" "Yes he is."

I was talking to a Gamestop guy who mentioned he heard that GT5 was delayed because they were working on damage models. As in they were trying to decide which models to use and stuff. This also leads me to believe we won't be having Premium vs. Standard car races. (except for maybe online) as the damage models would be completely different. Maybe, however, Premium cars will just use the standard damage model when racing against them. However, I have a feeling that if you enter a race with a Premium car, you'll get a bunch of Premium cars to race against and when you use a standard car, you'll get standard cars.

That doesn't sound any better. More like a High School Lunch Room Gossip among girls. You know, "Lisa didn't sleep with John, of course she won't, she's Aleesha's best friend and you know, Aleesha would kill her!!!", "Mia couldn't have gone out to the movie with Duron because she's going out with Randy","I thought Randy was gay?!!!". Hmmm.

Second thing is the F1 being an "easter egg". I don't really get what this guy is trying to say but I think you have to unlock the F1 like every other car as well.
Maybe it's a bit harder to get (like collect 600 cars and then you'll get it) but to unlock a car the normal way has not much to do with an "easter egg".

By that logic you're also only allowed to use the exact same set-up as the real car in the game and only buy tuning parts the real car has applied as well if you're a true purist that is.
If it only extends to the visual elements that philosophy is hypocrite or flawed at least.

It's a question of what you consider to be "real" in the context of a game or simulation.
If you regard GT as just a truthfully replicated real life situation to experience as a game a livery editor might be considered not real.
If you however, like me, can imagine GT replicating a possible real life scenario whereby a livery editor can be used in a way you would do if you had the means to do it in real life it's just as "real" as setting up and tuning the car in game to your personal preference.
But then again, I'm not a purist in any way but still want GT to be as accurate to real life possibilities ( not the actual real life situation ) as possible.

I agree. These mega-purists are just strange. I don't know, maybe it's a snap grumpy reaction, but I just don't get it, especially in a game which offers a plethora of tuner cars to start with, and tons of modifications you can make to just about every stock car.

But if they're serious, maybe they can start their own little car club. "I'm Earth, and I refuse to use S Class tires." ;)

You're not alone there, I can't understand these people that deliberately want to limit everyones choices. Give people the choices and if they don't want to use them then so be it.
 
Fans Can Experience Virtual Green Racing

The American Le Mans Series not only advertises itself as the Global Leader of Green Racing, but it is firmly at the forefront of developing green technologies, alternative energy uses and environmental consciousness with its teams and manufacturers at each and every race.

It’s no small feat to be working with officials from the U.S. Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency as the series does. The latest innovation sees the green racing platform transition to the virtual world for fans to try out on a regular basis.

Salt Lake City marked the debut of a Green Racing Simulator that takes elements from the alternative energy uses of ALMS teams and the MICHELIN® GREEN X® Challenge and converts it into a video game. It’s developed by the DOE, EPA and SAE.

The simulation uses the Gran Turismo 5 arcade racing game for the Sony PlayStation 3 as the outlet, and a team of developers who have integrated portions of the MICHELIN® GREEN X® Challenge. Fans can now experience firsthand what goes into determining the winners of the race within a race that rewards teams that travel the farthest, fastest and with the least environmental impact.

Right now the simulation is set up using a Chevrolet Corvette that, like its brethren in ALMS, runs on Cellulosic E85 (second generation ethanol). But this Corvette also has a hybrid system developed with boost levels. The simulation captures the speed and energy consumption, which combined with the energy use, braking and acceleration, and fuel use, go into calculating the Green Racing Score.

“The way it’s set up now, upper 8’s is about the limit,” said Danny Bocci, a research engineer for the Center for Transportation Research at Argonne National Laboratory. Joerg Bergmeister and Gunnar Jeannette tested the system and set Green Racing Scores in the low 9’s, but Bocci said these were slightly inaccurate due to tweaks with the system. Adjusted for the proper system, the scores would have been even lower, to indicate a consistent balance of pace and efficiency over a race.

Bocci spent hours developing the simulation and integrating the Green Racing Score into the system. He explained the process of how the simulation came together.

“We started with Gran Turismo for PlayStation, because we didn’t want to develop an entire race simulator out of scratch,” he said. “So we made a system that sits on top of the PlayStation game, and it watches you play. With that information, like vehicle/engine speed, it runs this through the actuality of what the vehicle would be doing – say gasoline versus E85 and the differences between that.

“It also implements a hybrid system so it recharges the battery in the system,” Bocci added. “This allows you to have the boost functionality in the game. It’s the same equation used in the MICHELIN® GREEN X® Challenge to give you a Green Racing Score.”

The display at Salt Lake City was set up next to the first hybrid race car that competed in the ALMS, the Corsa Motorsports Ginetta Zytek 09S Hybrid that ran in the LMP1 class in 2009.

The simulator is in its earliest stages, and Bocci did not rule out the possibility of expanding to a multiplayer platform that could include other manufacturers, for instance Porsche, Ferrari or BMW.

“Right now it’s Corvette-themed, but possibly multiplayer down the road,” he said. “Calculating the numbers based on your Green Racing Score could possibly save you a stop in a 12 or 24-hour race, which is huge. This allows you to improve and capture the analysis.”

Fans can test out the simulator at all remaining U.S. rounds of the series, at Lime Rock, Mid-Ohio, Road America and Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta.
