There have been numerous comparisons lately between Gran Turismo 5 and Forza 3. The ironic part of this all is that Gran Turismo 5 isn’t even out yet. Everything we’ve been basing our comparisons on have been still shots taken from the photo mode, promotional releases, and/or handy-cam video footage of the game. The fact of the matter is that we all know Gran Turismo 5 is going to LOOK amazing, no questions there. And from what we’ve SEEN, the game should deliver in the physics department. But until we actually have the game in our PlayStation 3′s and are playing first-hand, there’s really no comparison to be made.
That said, GT5 is already a success, financially at least. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which came out in April of 2008, has sold approximately 3.86 4.84* million copies worldwide. Assuming a $15 profit (on average), that’s roughly $72 million. The actual profit may be less or more depending on Sony’s cut, but the rumored $60 million budget for Gran Turismo 5 has been almost completely paid for by Gran Turismo 5 Prologue alone. When GT5 launches in November it’s going to sell millions, that’s a guarantee. How many millions will likely depend on how fans receive the game, but considering we’ve been waiting for nearly six years…
In terms of Gran Turismo 5 versus Forza 3, based on the available information, GT5 is poised to come out on top. GT5P has sold nearly as many copies as Forza 2 (4.01 million since may of 2007) which had almost a full year longer on the market. That isn’t to discount Forza 2, it was a good game, but for what many consider a glorified demo, GT5P is a great benchmark of what is to come. If Gran Turismo five doesn’t sell more than 5 million copies in it’s first two years, I’ll be shocked. People can say Polyphony Digital is putting too much into the game, that they are perfecting the wrong details, but let’s face it, GT5 is going to have something for just about anyone interested in racing games. Whether it be NASCAR, WRC, Supercars, or your daily driver, there’s something for everyone, and that has A LOT of potential when it comes to sales.
Say what you want about which is better, that’s pure opinion, but come November, the real numbers will start pouring in and I think it’s safe to say Gran Turismo 5 will come out on-top of Forza 3 in the end.
**UPDATE: This was never meant to be an actual comparison, graphics or otherwise. Those bits of the article were simply my opinions. I simply wanted to point out that Gran Turismo 5 has already succeeded. It is basically going to start at break-even when most games need a year or two to reach that.
