I've owned muscle cars with 7+ liter engines, one even ran on av gas...none of them even remotely sounded like that. To me, that video doesn't even sound like a car. (even with Sony headphones)

A big V8 is violent. It's really too bad that GT5 couldn't tap into that. Everyone, at least once, deserves to take a quick ride in something as brutal and unsophisticated as an overpowered muscle car. There's nothing quite like it.

Here's a video of a Ford 427 (7.0L), skip to 0:45:

I agree that it could be much better. I'm just happy it doesn't sound like a 4cyl. Have you heard the new Camaro in game? Seems to sound pretty nice.

Here's a vid upload that was not taken with a cell phone camera nor was it recorded off of someone's TV;

That's the 'Trans-Cammer' SEMA winner. Does that sound like a V8 to you? Does it even sound like a car? Nevermind the fact that it's supposed to have a ginormous V8, does it sound 'unique' or does it sound like a generic appliance?

Sounds like a V8 to me, just way overpowered by the whine (Supercharger maybe?) which I believe was the same problem with the NASCAR COT and the Corvette Stingray.

Anyone gotten the ae86 yet? Still racing like crazy just to check the used dealership to see if the ae86 is there..

I need to hear the sound!! :P

Hate to say it but the GT sounds have always been a little... tinny and simulated. Least that's how it has sounded to me. As much as I dislike the game, the best engine sounds I've come across yet is actually from Shift. Just try the Zonda R on the main straight at Road America and tell me that's not an insanely good sound indeed!

Sorry for taking so much time, but here are the exhaust vids:

Next upload will be an f430, audi r8v10 or ford gt.......now i must farm money :sly:

I gotta say, sounds have improved a lot! I hope I'm still alive when GT6 comes out. Hopefully engines will sound more mechanical and raspy, and not as synthetic as they do now.

I think PD has definitely taken a step in the right direction as far as sounds go. Sure some cars still don't sound like their real life counterparts, but for the most part, they at least sound pleasing to the ear and sound like the correct type of engine (American V8, high revving V10, V12, etc.).

At least the sounds change when you put mods on, I think the sound is a lot better having played GT4 recently. But as with every game, could be better, no game is perfect even if people think it is.

C5 Race exhaust sounds like it have a I6, definitely lost some V8 characteristics
is the C5 a premium or standard?

Anyone managed to get the ae86 yet? I`ve been doing a race, then checked used dealership, then another race, then used car dealership again, for the entire day, and the ae86 still hasnt popped up there.

I was just wondering if anyone has checked out the sound of it yet? Or what about the 240Z or the 280Z?

Strangely enough the AE86 was the car I bought straight off the bat, the game forced me to "buy my first car" before entering into the license tests. So I spent 12,000 credits on an AE86, done all the license tests, some karting, nascar, mercedes challenge etc and by the time all that was done I had enough money to buy numerous cars, I've driven the AE86 once on a drift trial on the TGTT and it sounds... nothing special, but then i reckon a bone stock AE86 IRL sounds pants too.. My tuned tommi mak on the other hand.....

Found this video of the mustang gt in the wet, it sounds passable, not good, but not terrible. That trans-cammer sounds weak, though, Is that supposed to be blower whine? It doesn't sound like a charger belt at all.

Sounds fine to me.

Guess I'll be keeping the stock exhaust on that car.

I've driven three different cars so far. Impreza '10 and BMW M3 are far from spot on but the Ferrari F40 isn't all that bad. I hope they will continue to work on the sounds that need improvement. Not just for GT6 but also for future patches.

The Corvettes both sounded better stock. As soon as the race exhaust went on, they sounded buzzy, high pitched and nothing like a V8.

Usually the exhaust sound gets thinner but the engine sound is still there, this is like they just made the exhaust sound without blending the engine.

Nothing new with GT, but it works with some cars it does not with others, generally, it comes down to the "exhaust sound model" or capture.

I think they just EQ the original sound to make it have that effect. But EQ'ing cant be done in the complexity needed to capture something like the sound of an exhaust(or guitar amp for example), in music digital amp people are working with "virtual models" or Impulse Responses, these are waves or Impulses which are played through the desired hardware ( the interior of an exhaust, or through an amp through guitar speakers) a sound like a gunshot or pink noise and capture the "response".

They then record the characteristics with a mic(like recording the exhaust) in a WAV file, which can be applied to the chain of sounds, except this wont model the engine(and have the eq remove its characteristics) it will only model the exhaust independently and then that ultra complex EQ called Impulse Response can be applied in the 2nd chain of sounds that goes Engine--Exhaust.

So they can have their stock exhaust and Engine captures then just apply the appropriate exhaust Impulse.

From my experience with gt and forza games is that the street and sport options alway sound more realistic. However in gt5 we have the ability to buy headers and cats so this may have an affect on the sound? Not long now guys! :-)

For me unfortunately the sound lacks detail. Ok they have a change in engine note when you swap exhaust systems, but there seems to be no crackels, grumbs and aggression to the sounds. It still sounds too computerised, especially if you using the car view. You want to here

The sound needs much more passion!!

Yup, we are FARRRRRR from it.... maybe GT10...

What I notice with most of the videos is an overabundance of mechanical whine at high revs. Most sound good below 5k but sound quite far off at red line. Its like they overemphasize the belt and transmission sounds at higher revs. The engine sounds seem to get overpowered and lost.

It's due to aliasing and the pitch shifting involved, with short samples.
I don't think PD can do much more with what they have to work with. Wait till The PS4 for better.
Sound is only just one aspect that is fighting with a lot of other stuff for resources.

What ? Is that serious, when you change the exhaust on a 1960's corvette it sounds like that ?

The stock sound is acceptable
The Sport exhaust sounds like a 6 cyl engine.
and don't even talk about the titanium exhaust that sounds like a 4 banger.

Did PD sound departement ever heard a low rumbling V8 ? Not all engines sound like generic V6 or inline 4.

Note to myself: Do not change the exhaust on American V8 cars.

:( Stock exhaust WILL stay on ALL American v8 cars. How and why? What is causing them not to be able to get this right. No doubt I am getting the game will enjoy it but this has got to stop. They may as well have kept the sound of the stock exhaust on the V8's when upgraded rather than putting these terrible samples in. Most if not all other games with customization to cars can get the V8's right. I love the gt series but its killing me. Come on PD, please get it right next time or try some patches with gt5 at least to correct some of these engine tones
