GT6 Sales Discussion

Ok but when you see how AI cars slow down, rubber band, park the car on corners waiting for human user to come back from a 20 sec gap in tha last 2 laps because he/she sucks at driving and spun out on 2nd lap...

..you can't really blame people. It's not pre-judging, it's the offline mode that is totally designed for casuals.

Yes, that is annoying, especially if that's important to you, but it's not the whole picture.

I'm curious to know what Kaz meant by "hardcore mode". But that's probably a good way off yet and I'm more interested in Ronda right now. I have other racing games I can get my racing fix from, luckily.

How exactly is that not good? Not good would be not in the top 20 and a lot of those games ahead of it aren't even $60 or as large of a download.... Minecraft is only $20 and a small file to download so of course that would sell more digitally.
The fact that GT6 actually made it to the Top 20 list of PS3 games is not bad. Probably expected it to top 1st but how when GTAV and Mindcraft are there? I'm surprised that GT6 still made it around no. 9, so that is good.

Japanese gamers love GT6 for sure! :D
GT6 : 300000 after a month.
GT5 : 780000 after 3 years.

It could be much better than that!
Every first GT in each generation sales better than second GT and GT6 could sales better on PS4. PS4 sold 4.2 million units in 2013 and its out of stock in most countries! (Xbox One sold 3 million units and GT is more popular than FM)
GT3 released only 7,8 months after PS2 and it was the best selling GT of all time. (albeit it had outstanding quality ===> amazing reviews, not like GT6 with 81/100 rating)

GT6 was released specifically for the Japanese fans of GT. Unlike NA and EU, PS4 will not be released in Japan until next month.

The sales number being disastrous is a bit of an exaggeration. A disaster was when the Titanic hit, or when Bush became president, but I mean this just shows that people might have some GT apathy and lost a bit of its luster and appeal. All the people that I've talked to in Gamestop when I went to buy GT6 who were also buying it, owned GT5. I don't really know anyone that bought GT6 as an entry title.

GT5 did well because in my opinion it was the main racing game, the first big racing juggernaut for that console. It was not really a "its really really good racer go buy it" it was more of a "its a must have if you have a PS3". By the time with GT6 all this attention was on the PS4, and those that still had PS3s felt that GT6 was a meh compared to next gen.

GT6 really only appealed to a specific category this time, those that bought GT5 or those that were into racing. GT5 had a universal appeal, as a family game or something to buy for PS3 owners.

In fairness I have enjoyed the game most of the time, as it is not without its faults, but thats me from a longtime GT player and a racing and car enthusiast. If I was looking at it from the average gamer, the regular buyer, I wouldn't buy GT6 at all, it doesn't have that general appeal that GT5 had.

yes, but when u watch, for comparation, xbox360 minecraft sales http://www.vgchartz.com/game/51765/minecraft/Global/ you will see that the numbers are not high, avg 100k per week... Lets say on ps3 is the number higher, from 17 december, there is no way they sell more then 350k.. so place 9 for GT6 will not be more then 100k.. and luckly in EU is far better situation.

Guys this game is doing really well for a game that has just been released after the release of Sonys 8th gen console and it is enjoyable for something that is incomplete with bad sounds, rolling starts and crap/unrealistic AI for example + a load of bugs.
That sounds a bit contradictory

Why are you comparing GT6 digital downloads against physical copies of xbox minecraft?

For Japan
Pd shows GT5p at 740, Vgc which uses media create numbers shows 0.57m

Difference, digital ? potentially shows 23% of GT5ps sales were digital.

just food for though.

Possible but it depends on when GT5P became available for download. In the UK it was after pretty much everybody who was going to buy it already had it on Blu Ray.

Or it's a case of Vgc being Vgc.

Maybe i am wrong, but, physical copies are almost, allways higher number selling, it was just for orientation comparison..
Minecraft is not a good comparison, since it is bigger than any Console sim will ever be in the future. It's pretty much a behemoth in the industry now. :(

US had digital on day one, im guessing Japan was same... but im not sure.

I was trying to point to big dani that Minecraft wasn’t the best standard to gauge Gran Turismo, specifically as they likely have different if not opposite physical vs digital sales ratios.

VGChartz doesn't track digital sells, they have no way of knowing how much it has sold. They guess numbers and then update those numbers when they are released by official tracking companies. These companies such as NPD in North America and Media Create in Japan do not track digital sells. They are retail only and the PS3 does not have a retail version of Minecraft like the X360 it is only available on the PS Store. Furthermore the X360 version of Minecraft has been out for a long time where as the PS3 version just came out so it will be higher on the PS3 this month naturally. GT6 being at #9 for being a full release at $60(only two games ahead of it are a full $60) and a 15 gig file is pretty good I'd say.

Didn't the 360 version of Minecraft have software issues to dog it? That'd explain quite a bit.

GT is a solid game, played by a reasonable number of people - it simply won't compare to other genres on a number one basis though - I mean FPS titles have always been more popular than racing ones. I think it's doing quite well to show so high on the charts to be honest.

Sales numbers are still good in Europe, but in the US they seem really disastrous; 52nd place in the last week of Dec?:

Edit: 21st place in Japan??

To be expected when you do zero marketing in the US... They are putting all their bets on ps4/GT 7. And if that hunch is remotely accurate then it would be the only suggestion that 7 will come sooner than later...

My guess is at some point GT 6 will simply branch to the ps4 late in the year and a relaunch will happen. Perhaps like GT 5 XL but it will be 7 because of all the tech in the background being turned on will likely look 10x better, and aesthetics has always been a key selling point in a new console cycle.

Mod: any chance to change the thread name to "sales data" or something less dramatic? Not to mention VG charts is complete crap but the only thing accessible to the general public...

Actually there is'nt a lot of marketing here in Europe neither apart from seeing it in the stores, but here it is still surprisingly selling well.

I doubt PD can make a deadline like that, people won't take stuff like hoover sounds, standards and chase the rabbit anymore so I hope they will finally update those and knowing PD that will take a looong time.

Or they could indeed just give us GT6 which better graphics  (seriously).
Doubt that people will still fall for that trick tough...

You make a good point for us here at GT planet... But with GT 6 being a relatively silent launch they could get away with a "re-launch".

If there is in fact a much more robust graphics engine with features disabled and all they had to do was remake previous features, new audio, repurpose assets like old tracks, and do another one of there under inspiring spreadsheet careers... That could easily be done in a year as there isn't really anything creatively risky in that...

But as always, this is pure speculation and not grounded in anything other than the relative ease in using logic to ground an assumption. And this had never worked in predicting GT releases for us in the past.

Great news that it's sitting at 2 Million already(According to VGChartz, take that as you will), can see 6 reaching 4 million by the end of this year. GT6 will be a slow burner for sure.
