I was finally able to race today. I focused on B. Two races in the Mustang and one in the RC-F. Missed a podium from P8 due to a penalty. Penalties are not normally my Achilles Heel, but this week...I had one lap where I accumulated 2 seconds of penalties!

Should I also be using my feet to activate pedals and hands for utilizing my steering wheel? I've been kinda laying on the floor and pushing the pedals with my hands while my feet hook into the wheel spokes. Driving upside down is tricky. Is driving while seated the recommended position?
its a massive help if you rotate your tv 180degrees so it’s facing a wall 👍🏼

Okay, I ran 5 races on Daily B. First field was all D/S drivers. Got 2nd. 2nd race was CD/S drivers. Won that one. 3rd was all C/C drivers, got 2nd or 3rd. 4th was all C/S drivers. Won that one. Got upgraded to DR C. Ran this last race with all C/SA drivers. Had the lead for the middle couple laps but got a .5 penalty and the guy behind me slipped past at the hairpin on the 4th lap. I couldn't catch him by the end. Got 2nd.

Overall a much better experience tonight than last night and I improved my best lap to the low 1:34's so I pole a bit better.

It doesn't help that Deep Forest, especially the middle sector, is a very tight track with a lot of bumps that can throw people around as well as having a single line through for the most part.

It brings out all of the flaws of sim racing versus the real thing, in the limited FOV, lack of actual racing experience and knowledge, and general preparedness as most players will be chilling on the couch with a pad, some high, drunk etc. and not focused fully on a competitive endeavour.

Not that they have to be, of course, it's just a game, but it brings the expected results on a track like that.

Finally got some time this week with the game after work yesterday. Ran some q laps for deep forest and did a reasonable time with the moostang 33.7xx if i remember right. Iam confident i can trim that close to a 33 flat. No races though. I will probably do some today. Will move onto the alfa and /or the wrx, but i much prefer how the rwd cars feel. So i started with the stang.

Q lap is shared with gtp and tpc tags

When it comes to aids. I absolutely support people running what they feel is the best compromise between speed and confidence. It is sadly a fact though that generally speaking the fastest way to get faster is to drop them. They activate fairly often when they are not needed in my experience, and everytime it does, it costs you time. I don't think anyone is saying it so much in a git gud sorta way, but more likely pointing it out because it was a big help for us

As for getting around drivers that are holding you up. I also have this issue, and i generally feel that becoming more assertive and confident is a big part of it.

.
Some of us are perfectly capable of functioning behind a wheel when drunk at work etc

A couple of really great experiences at Suzuka over the last 24 hours...

Using my "tame-but-stable" S15 (top speed 230) I had a nice fight for P10 after a legit overtake on lap 1 through sector 2, but some horribly embarrassing rinsings on the straights. Left fighting for the humble position with a Sileighty driver for the second half of the race, each lap earning myself a decent gap through the twisty bits only lose a whole second on the home straight.

On two occasions we hit Turn 1's braking zone at the same time inspiring some very cool side by side racing, only for me to recover my lead up the esses and eventually prevail in the duel.

Using my "wily-but-quick" 180SX I set a much better qualifying time and managed a Q5 to P4 with a fellow A-rated German driver on my tail throughout the contest. He had me through the Degners but I held my nerve to take advantage of my superior pace through the rest of the lap.

Credit to the author of my base tune which I modified slightly just not to kill myself.

Heres my 180sx tune. For those that dont have the sileghty. Im p42 atm, so should be quite competetive with the meta.
If you need more stable car, raise braking diff to 30.

Someone upthread mentioned two hours of QT before racing. Is this what others do as well?
I usually do 2 or 3 laps. That's probably why I am hovering at the DR C/B, SR S level.
That and my refusal to drive 4x4
Absolutely
I use ABS, default in GR cars and weak on street cars, but I weaned off the other stuff, but very gradually. I usedTC2 for the longest time in GTS, along with AT, but once it became a hindrance for me I stopped.
I realised I was much more safe in the MR cars with it off because I could feel the car moving better. With the TC on I never felt the problems before it spun.
There's also a lot of leagues that doesn't allow CS, ASC etc so I thought it was best for me to learn to drive without it.

I just want to clarify something. To all of you good enough to be able to turn off the assists and not wipe out all the time:

The only reason I'm defending assists is that I think that I'm doing fairly well in spite of using them. But no way do I think that makes me the better driver. Not at all. It's more like "Hey look how fast I can go with training wheels on!" I hope that makes sense.

I didnt mean what I said that way, I was just pointing out the problems that can arise by following those assists religiously
LOL - that's the problem with written communication. I thought I was telling you that I knew what you meant, and it came out wrong. We're cool.
But I get snubbed when I say "Howdy" to you before the race.
I figured it was a bad day. :grumpy:
LOL. First off, I didn't know that was you. Secondly, I rarely text before a race, because I'm not fast enough to get the message out before the timer runs down. So you can rest assured I read what you text, but I probably won't reply.

Absolutely 100% understand this. And I also understand how using them can actually develop bad habits. When I turned them off for a while at Deep Forest yesterday, I discovered that a couple of my favored lines were not the best, because I couldn't keep it on the track. The assists kept me on the track with those lines, but clearly they aren't the most efficient lines. That was good to learn.

To be completely honest, I'm going to try to see if I can run without the driving assists turned on (TCS 0, etc. but I'll keep ABS) at Deep Forest. I found out last week that with Gr.4 4WD cars, they're not much harder to control without the assists. Except for the final hairpin at Deep Forest. So I may keep TCS at 1 during actual races just for that corner, but that's it. And no, I can't turn it on and off during the race, because I want to keep the radar up, and that's too many buttons to push or dials to dial during a race, for me.

We'll see how it goes.

AFAIK @sturk runs with TCS, we had a member here called Groundfish that made A (was no A+ back then) with TCS on.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with using assists, that's what they are there for.
For me it was faster to turn them off but plenty of people much faster than me uses them. Like you :)
I am not some elitist that try to dictate how other people should play
Every one should play the way they enjoy the most.

In the name of whoever, don't ever ever ever turn ABS off, or the gates of hell will open and earth will disappear in a black hole!

Or you'll just spin off in the braking zone. One of those two options.

The way I race would probably horrify some of the sim racing elitists. :scared:

Apparently, I do all the worst things.
-I recline on the couch, with my feet stretched out on a coffee table.
-I use a controller, but don't modulate my throttle or brakes. I just go and stop with the X and [ ] buttons.
-I use auto trans almost exclusively. The exception being manual for some low powered street cars.
-I use traction control, counter steering assist, and braking zone markers.
-I chug beers throughout my driving sessions.

To some, it would appear to be a total **** show, but I've actually had more than my fair share of success.
Regardless, I enjoy myself.

Who cares if someone uses assists or not? Run what you want; no need to justify it to anyone unless maybe they're specifically asking or trying to help.

We need to all get together and protest. That way Sturk and PD get the message!

Feel like I'm finally making progress. Moved from DR D to DR C last night doing a couple of C races. I've a good QL for my class and every race I've been on pole.

Race 1 was an easy drive in 1st. By end of first lap I was 8 seconds ahead and it only increased from there.

Race 2 I was still DR D but right on the cusp of C. Got grouped with better drivers, mostly C, one B and a few Ds. I was still pole but only by 20 thousandths this time. Good start off the line and I was building gap but leader nerves got the better of me and I stuffed it in the S-curves to drop to around 10th. Then managed to stuff it again to drop to near the back half way through the first lap. After that I focused to catch up. Worked my way back for a 5th place finish. Doing OK against "better" classes was enough to move me comfortably to DR C.

I took at look at race B but I just can't find a competitive time there. I still stuck in the mid 1.35s, so I abandoned daily races and did some grind to earn credits at LeMans instead...

Oh yeah, I use assists but tweak them per race. For C it's currently TCS 1, driving line and markers, braking indicators and counter-steer strong. Usually it is TCS 0 with counter-steer off or weak but with C this week, ! need the counter steer.

Haha, I do exactly the same. With legs crossed. Fun fact: Usually my right leg is on top of my left leg. If I do it the other way around (when it starts to hurt), my lap times go down significantly. 😆
My biggest regret moving to a wheel set up is that it no longer feels like a chill time relaxing on the couch. I've found an uptick in the amount of time I'm not playing GT. Part of which is I've run out of content but another part of it is that it's far less easy to just pick up and play.

I just experienced something I've never seen before, and I suspect nobody else has either. The guy I was battling for 2nd starting vanishing from the game right after the finish line, kind of like "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" if you ever saw that:

38 second video:

I'm guessing his machine booted him, or froze, or something like that. I'll take P2, but it was literally just given to me. Wow!

I've had guys quit on the line like that from 2nd - guess they want to preserve some winning-only streak

The only time I can remember that I got a reply out of you was the last time we raced at Alsace and my Q time went down dramatically between races and I was suddenly positioned in front of you. It makes me kind of proud that it actually elicited a “What the hell?!” from you before the race!

My thumbs are thanking me for getting a sim rig and wheel. When I use the controller I use the D-pad and the buttons for accelerating and braking. After about a month of using the controller my thumbs were raw.
back in the GT5 days my accel was X and my brake was square. I didn't use triggers at all, couldn't get to grips with them. I earned my thumb callouses on the Nurburgring and Le Mans.
Then I bought Project Cars and that game used triggers for accel and brake. I never looked back after that. Using triggers is a little more ergonomic than the buttons. I couldn't use the D-Pad for steering though.

I do remember wearing out several D-Pads on the OG Playstation with Tony Hawk though!

I am a disgrace to DR B drivers everywhere. Earlier I got P1 in a lobby of B/S drivers, and ended up P15. I drove like a complete idiot. I even hit someone from behind and didn't wait for them. I should be ashamed of myself (I am, actually, which is why I'm writing this confessional).

The race that followed, I started P5. I lost control in the esses when I got hit from behind by someone. I ended up P11, and unfortunately took out my aggravation on an innocent driver, who did nothing wrong except dare to pass me when I was pissed off.

These are my sins today (so far). My penance is that I dropped 10 DR B percentage points in 2 races - from 95% to 85%. I'm almost afraid to do another race.

What I remember, and maybe it wasn't you, is seeing you behind me in a lobby. That was the real shock. That was you, right?

I got a time for Daily Race A that's within the top 2k times, and what I discovered along the way is that having TCS to 1 definitely helps with this car - at least, in my experience. Pretty fun layout, too, even if it's pretty much entirely blind corners.
