Great game, the pundits were all saying Germany had no chance of winning the WC before the match but i bet they'll change their minds now.

Great game indeed. I thought that the 2nd goal Costa Rica made was offside.

Mr Boy - Trinidad is going to lose big time ;)

They have no chance of winning the world cup with a defence like that. Costa Rica aren't exactly the best team there, but they still scored twice.

Hey wazup people!...Good God!! what a first goal from the germans!

I was working at wendy's right, so I went outside to check if the parking lot was clean (because today we had supervision) and I saw a Van parked all the way down the lot and a handicaped man getting off of it, so I decided to help him out a little bit and I saw another guy in the van who was about to help the other guy...he was setting up a TV with a not very good reception of the game!!, He looked at me like If I was gonna tell him to get away from my parking lot, but instead I smiled and greeted him ad of course I hung out here for like 15 min to watch the game :D...the game was just starting when I saw the amazing goal from Lahm...I stood like  ...this is not a good begining for Costa Rica.
I had to get back inside and continue working but my girlfriend kept me updated with text messages...

Taken from Thursday's press conference.

Q: So a question for all three of you: [Mark Webber, Jensen Button, David Coulthard] your feelings about the World Cup, who’s going to win, who will you be supporting?
MW: I’ve lived in England for ten years and I’ve loved the English people and the comedy and all that sort of stuff. But when it comes to sport, I hope they get absolutely battered in the World Cup, so I’m going for Australia.

Q: Do you know where you’re going to watch Australia’s opening match?
MW: Australia? I don’t even know when they are playing first.

Q: That’s how much you follow them!
MW: Err. Well I’ll take some interest when… like all the other Aussies, only when they’re doing well.

Q: Jenson?
JB: It’s quite an obvious one: England, I think, have got a fantastic team. Hopefully they can work well together and yeah, I think this could be a very good year for English football.

Q: Do you know where you are going to watch the opening match?
JB: My debrief room, after qualifying, I think.

Q: David, you’ll be supporting England of course…
DC: Yeah. Honestly, I haven’t really got a big interest in football but as the British flag, British passport holder… the St George’s cross lies below the St Andrews flag, I guess England.

Q: But you won’t necessarily be watching the match…
DC: It’s not my passion. I can understand the excitement of everyone here wanting to know what’s going on, but I take it as it comes. I guess everyone else is going to be watching it, so it’s going to be difficult to escape it.

Wanchope's feet were level with the feet of the last German defender. Level = onside.

It is my impression or we from the south really really prefer the blue uniform?

👍

Mr.OzzyGT
UPDATE: Poland 0 - Ecuador 2.
What a lousy performance by the Polish team.
Ciao...

Indeed. I thought Poland would kick Equatorians but i just don't know what happened.

What a shame for Poland. But I still believe in 1st Equador and 2nd Poland
(sorry, deustchland)

I'll wake up early tomorrow to watch England vs Paraguay, should be a good game. Also, Germany had a good start, I think they have a good chance of winning the world cup. You don't need a bright defence to get to the finals, Brazil is the proof of that. :)

Well, I like them both, but the yellow is still my favorite. This one I bought is the supporter's version and I never saw it in yellow, only blue, green and gray.

that's true. I laugh at how the commentators analyse Brazil's formation and strategy :D. First of all...I've been a Brazil follower since early days when I was back in Argentina (I liked them both), so I got to realize that Brazil is not a 4-4-2 or 3-4-3 team. They don't even care about that kind of stuff...they just play/dance football and that's it!, unlike teams like Italy with its famous 4-4-2 which is getting kind of boring now.

Brazil = Jogo Bonito ;)

well, its ok as long as the opponent is costa rica...but when you're playing against brazil or any of the other top teams then you can't rely on scoring more goals.
the defence has to get their act together.

that said, i have to admit i really enjoyed the game. it was quite exciting with lots of goals.

mmh, its really weird. we're in germany are all complaining and betting on brazil, while you foreigners view the performance of our team to be rather good.
we're such a lame bunch of snivellers. :D

The Germany game was entertaining but neither side played that well, Germany were the better side but I think Poland and Ecuador both played better. Poland played the best today even though they didn't win they were unlucky hitting the bar twice near the end, but they did everything better than Ecuador except put the ball in the back of the net. They held the ball better, passed better, had better movement and controlled the game better, they just couldn't score, which is about the only thing Germany was doing well imo. Imo if Germany play like that every game in the cup, they won't get passed the first knockout stage.

V,

We know our team. We all remember 1998 (the weirdest final ever), when Brazil arrived as semi-gods. We lost.

Then, in 2002, when the favs were Argentina and England. They lost. We won.

Perhaps we can break the rule and make the favorite win this time. But i'm very afraid.

Sometime ago I saw a documentary about italian football. Some very expecienced old italian told, mixing english and italian, that "the italian giocco calcio have an urgent need to suffer a giant shame before starting to play".

You, foreigners, may think that we are invincible and Ronaldo 1, Ronaldo 2 and that irritating robinho (yes, I hate him) and blablabla, but brazilian team works exactly like Italia (and Argentina, and France, and España, and mainly Mexico).

We have the worst defense ever. That Lucio deliberately let the ball to Owen in 2002.

I am only 20% sure that we will reach semi-finals this year.

What about Roberto Carlos deliberately un-blocking the ball from going inside the net on Zidan's second goal on the final of France 98'

Well, I think that's what Italy needs right now....a world cup would be good to lift up that reputation they just got from that scandal which I don't even wanna talk about righ now...

my mate is going to germany for the last sixteen, trouble is, he hopes we don't face poland as they have about 100,000 supporters crossing the boarder and they've said thier after the english and german fans :scared:

Yeah the german police quite like the english, because they say atleast theyre interested in the football, whilst the polish have only come to fight.

Well, I missed the first goal. So, that sucks.

Do I see a 6'7" British footballer with the name "Crouch?"

Awesomeness.

What in the name of trumpets is this referee smoking?

Booking Gerrard for not touching someone at all, and failing to book all but one instance of a Paraguay player swinging straight through a player after the ball has gone.

I know, the referee's a joke, not letting players get any drink and then booking Gerrard and not booking a high number of other tackles that actually made contact.

I'm not liking Crouch in this setup, he doesn't movce for the ball, he doesn't control the ball very well, all he is, is a 6'7" lump to deflect the ball off.

We've controlled the game, we just need someone to tell Steven Gerrard to stop trying to knock the bird down from on the roof :P. He's never as good for England as he is for Liverpool because Sven plays him out of position, Gerrard is one of the players who I'd move other players out of position to accomodate, he's superb when he's playing in the right place.

It's a shame Paraguay have been so poor, i was expecting a great battle but it seems like one way traffic at the moment. We're not exactly bombarding them but they don't seem to be creating much at all :indiff:

1-0 To England, Paraguay performed much better in the second half but could'nt get an equaliser.

An own goal in the 2nd minuite won it for England, they held that score for the rest off the game

Poverty
going by the performance so far england are not contenders for the cup.

While I've said that all along, I can't agree that this performance is an indicator of anything.

Take the referee out of the match completely would have made it a much better game. The Paraguay players quickly learned that they could tackle anyone however they felt and they'd get away with it - the only time I saw a foul given against Paraguayan players was at the very end of the second half. Peter Crouch didn't play well - but then every time he went to head the ball he was either blown for fouling, or just held down on the ground by the Paraguay players, and he was left isolated for a large portion of the match by the referee persistantly giving play back to Paraguay for no reason at all.

The performance by both teams - Joe Cole excepted - wasn't great, but the officials didn't allow it to be.
