Damn! I shoulda stuck with Handley Page and not chickened out and gone to the Gotha.

The current one is a Dehavilland fighter... Hornet or Wasp or something, to go with the Mosquito f/b.

[edit] No, I forgot the Hornet had a low horizontal stab, not a T tail. Westland Whelkin, maybe? No, the stab's not right for that either. Hrm. [/edit]

OK, got the stab figured out. This is a Westland Whirlwind.

Just confirmed it is a Whirlwind via google (a helicopter shares the name with the heavy fighter), so I believe it is Duke's turn

OK, assuming Mike will confirm my ID, here's one for y'all:

Since I appear to have that spot on, here's the next plane:

(They're all the same plane, you just have to identify what type they are).

Did you cheat?
:irked:
That is entirely correct. Go ahead and post a new one!

Northrop Flying Wing, I believe B-57 but don't quote me on the number.

There's a great scene in the old War Of The Worlds movie where they nuke the Martians with one. There's quite a bit of flying footage of the Wing.

No, I remembered it from watching Wings on the Discovery Channel years ago :P

And yes it's the Northrop Flying wing, but they built a few prototypes. This one isn't a B-57.

I was going to say it was a german prototype, that supposedly formed the basis of the flying wing concept, but theres a few too many of them.

is it a B-49?

Yes, It's a B-49. The ones in the pics actually look like B-35s which are being converted to B-49s by removing the propellor engines and installing jets.

I do know that Edwards Airforce Base is named after an Air Force test pilot killed during testing of the B-49.

Technically the ones in that picture are B-35s, you can see the propeller shafts on the first and last planes in the picture. But yes, they were converted to YB-49s and YBR-49s.

On the right track...

Hmmm.... only one resembling a Goblin is "Flying Barrel".

Edit: Proper name is F3f Flying Barrel. That little circular marking below the cockpit is a obvious marking.

Can someone else confirm this :)

Edit edit: Its not a marking! Its a wheel :dopey:

👍

Clue: This particular aircraft was made under licence from the original manufacturer. Because it was built under licence, it has a different name to the original craft. What is it?

Ya, I'm good at aircraft markings.

edit: It's the Atlas MB-326K Impala. It was built under license from Aermacchi.

Bleh, so confusing. All of these licenses and renames.

edit2: eh, I think it's it.

I used to build a lot of models, and for reference I had a copy of Jane's All The World's Aircraft from 1945-6. Since the war had generated a lot of development, obviously, it listed a ton of esoteric and experimental aircraft. It had 3-views and photos of thousands of aircraft, with their model histories. I don't have the book any more, but I read it a lot when I was younger.

I can't belive there is an aircraft forum here ....cool. Ive got one but judging from the previous I think you guys will find it easy. Its a cool plane though

Hi, DQuaN, glad you found us! That's a MiG-29.

These "Guess the..." threads are organized so that the last person to correctly answer the question gets to post the next picture. We're currently waiting for confirmation on ViperZero's answer above. If that's correct, he has the next go.

Welcome to another propellorhead.

Wrong im afraid....doesnt look anything like a 29....well.....maybe a little

More than a little. But you're right, with the flat bottom and the tighter engine spacing, it's a MiG-25.

Regardless, we're still waiting for confirmation of ViperZero.
