Well I only used the controller so far.
But when driving the m3, full gas round a corner only leeds to understeer, Unless your in first or second gear. I always have cockpit view, and pro physics.

Maybe it will be different with a wheel.... Going to find out soon.

I read people finding some cars tale happy, so maybe it's just the car setup or the fact that i'm using a controller.

Have to wait till the 17th to play the ps3 version with G25.

The car should understeer under those conditions, come of the power a bit, your pushing past the grip levels of your front tyres with the rear wheels

NFS: Shift arrived this morning and I popped the disc in and played for about 45mins before I headed out to the office. I've been looking for a game that is fun with the controller for casual yet challenging racing to pass the time until GT5 comes out. The Ferrari Challenge, Grid and a few others were either too arcade or too badly designed for my tastes, which kept me coming back to Prolouge. After 18 months of Prolouge and replying the game so much recently since "good" online racing is all but gone on NTSC and I'm not around during peak PAL racing time I really wanted something new.

My first impressions of NFS: Shift are positive. I never played any other NFS so I have none of the history with the series. Out of the box Shift is engaging with the DS3 and the ability to adjust levels is wonderful. Pro with a DS3 is just the right mix of realistic feeling, challenging racing and I can see it being enough to scale up to ultra competitive racing with the DFGT online (I look forward to that). The game looks a little too glossy, but maybe I'm used to how flat Prolouge looks (all the recent GT5 videos I've seen have the same glossy look Shift does). The car selection is wonderful as is having Spa, Laguna and the Nordschilfe. Car feel not quite Prologue or the GT series, but it's far better than anything else I've played in the past year or so. The sound design is great, but suffers some of the same faults (as mentioned already) as Prologue does, especially with the in-car view.

As I said, this game is engaging and enjoyable with a DS3 on the couch when I don't want to set up my wheel and wheelstand but it's not so light that I get bored with it. I can already see some things, little details mostly, I'll miss if they aren't in GT5.

If GT5 was out today I wouldn't go near NFS: Shift, and when GT5 is out I doubt I'll play it much. For not though, it's a wonderful and engaging quasi-sim to pass the time, at least to pull me away from replying Prologue for the up-tenth time. Between Shift and PSPGT I'll be able to pass the days away happily until GT5 finally appears.

Hi I have been fooling around with the game for abour 45 mins now.
Everything that was written so far was true IMO:

Realistic physics engine but a little bit more forgiving than GT5P, great sensation of speed, etc...

to benzAMG and poweroversteer in the game: it might be because you play with a controller than you can t do it. I play with driving force pro and i have a stock bmw 135i: if i turn the wheel in 1 direction, press the gas pedal, the car does donuts all day long. i tried in 1st gear, 2nd gear and also with traction control on low. maybe i misunderstand the definition of power oversteer, but i think the game is realistic in that aspect.

so far, i liked the immersion aspect of the game. from the first minute, you have a race engineer talking to you and though it mgiht sound corny at times, it does help into feeling like you are a career race car driver involved in a championship.

also, I think the developpers were smart to give you a taste of what it is to drive a fast car in the first portion of the game where you do a couple of tests used to determine your driving level. Since you will be stuck with a less powerful car for a while, i thought it was interesting to drive a powerful BMW 3 for a while.

when you get points during a race the screen gets rather overloaded with blinking stars,etc... which I dont like so much.

Im not into painting customizing my cars so much, but you can repaint and fool around with a few stickers for free. some I believe you have to pay for.
Some of the first cars available to buy:
s2000, rx8, 135i, audi s3, audi tt, chevrilet cobalt, civic si,nissan 240sx, nissan 180sx, nissan 350z (though i dont think you could possibly get enough money to buy the 350z right off the start) maybe ford focus,etc.... in other words a few entry level cars, FWD, AWD and RWD from the biggest manufacturers.

So far it s a great game that will help waiting for GT5.

well, feel for yourself. slam the throtle in 3th gear in a corner and nothing happens. Just understeer.

Well, in reality an E92 M3 isn't likely to throttle oversteer in 3rd gear without some type of heavy initiation. A Viper might have traction issues when powering out of a corner in 3rd on stock rubber, but not an M3 with less than 300lb-ft torque.

I think even a Viper would be fine in 3rd, purely down to the massively long gear ratios they have.

would you mind sharing how you set the sensitivity of your pedals? I found the S2000 (stock, my 1st car) so tail-happy when exiting corners, and uncontrollable at times. :scared: I'm using the G25 wheel and all sensitivity at 100% (steering, accel, and brake), with dead zone = 0. oh, I'm using Pro mode with no aids. :)

In their previous games (GTR x, GTL), SMS used 50% setting as fully linear sensitivity. Maybe they've copied the same logic in their new engine.

What the visual tuning like, creating a car with custom liveries and also the body mods? How many per car on average and are they all fairly tastefull or racey?

I'm seriousely thinking of buying this but the lack of a demo until October is downer. The thing is I've got Forza 3 arriving in Octoboer and then GT5 ordered and likely to be arriving in December. Once I get Forza 3 I can't see myself still playing this, but at th same time it looks like a bit of a thrill ride. If only they had a demo out, I'd try it and if I liked it I'd go and buy it straight away. If I'm not convinced or I don't get a chance to play it before October then I'm not buying it. It's too close to Forza 3's release for me to justify. So I guess the only chance is to keep checking the opinions of thoes who already have the game. Good customisation will give the game extra life for me, being able to customise the looks of the car and create my own unique but authentic looking race cars, I love doing that in Forza 2 but the body mods are lacking for a lot of the cars.

I have suprised myself lately with my buying habits. Not too long ago I wouldn't think twice about buying an aveage game that owuld give me a kick for a week and then letting it gather dust for the rest of it's life, but I recently cancelled my Dirt 2 pre-order because based on the demo I didn't think the game was going to appeal beyond the short term. It's worrying, I think I'm growing up. Mentally. And I promised I'd never do that.

Ugggh.. I'm wanting this game now...Need to hear some more impressions from the guys using a controller to be sure, as I don't like setting up the G25 and I don't have a very sturdy mount for it.

And Civic Si as a first car is a big selling point to me...is it 2006+?

I got this morning I only got to play for like 15 minutes. I like it so far my biggest problem is that I can't configure the controller like I want too. I like to use x for gas and square for brakes but i can't do that. So for right the controls are a little bit awkward. But I like the handling and the cars but I think graphically its GT5P all the way.

Thank you to those of you how are posting first impressions. I have a couple of questions:

When you replay a race is the background music always on or can you turn it off?

Are the car sounds as good as they seem in previews? They just seem so loud and in your face, like GT should be in my opinion.

Thank you!

Yes, it's that lovely '06 Civic Si.

One of the reasons I bought this game was to have something to play, not just casually with the DS3 when I didn't want to setup my wheel. I found it very enjoyable after about 90 minutes of play, The right mix of control and feel. Somewhere between Prologue's Standard and Professional physics, leaning more towards the later but more forgiving with a DS3, especially with high powered RWD cars.

It's not perfect, but good in a pinch when setting up the wheel is more of a commitment than one wants to make. Though if one wants to setup the wheel, this game will still work well.

In gt5p the M3 oversteers like crazy....

I think a better benchmark for comparison would be BMW's own sim "M3 Challenge", which is freely available on their site. The sim is developed by SMS ("Blimey!"), the same guys which developed NFS Shift. :)

So, I would be more happy if NFS Shift's physics are comparable to BMW M3 Challenge rather than to GT5p. :) In this BMW sim the car is real joy to drive - it's oversteery a little, but not as much as you describe.

BTW, I don't think the M3 oversteers that badly in GT5p.

How is the photomode? Do you have to upload the screenshots to EA server like previous NFS games? Actually I love to see if you guys can take awesome pictures like speedhunters did.

Well it doesn't oversteer that badly... I was exaggerating.

I actually played that M3 game a couple of times, and I agree it is very good. The physics are not bad at all in Shift but it quite different than in M3 Challenge and Gt5p.

That point is that you can accelerate full throttle out any corner without the back coming out. Some areas in the physics seem incorrect if you ask me. there are good parts though.

I think it's better that I stop saying anything, until I try it with a wheel. Maybe i'm just bad with the controller, and miss the feedback that a controller can not give me(never played gt5p with a controller).

Just got the PC version and am installing as we speak. I will post screens (ha PC has photomode) and impressions... but not just any impressions, G25 impressions.

Just picked up my copy from the local gamestop  I'll try to post a review tonight if I have time

Got my copy this morning and have put in atleast 3hrs trying to build my driver profile, as everyone have already mentioned the physics are very good, and sound is very well done. I have noticed that the AI will go out of it's way to block you to the point where it will attempt to brake check you on 200mph straights causing you to veer and loose control or forcing you to ram it in the rear which of course gives you aggressive points that you don't want, I also noticed that drafting will access aggressive points as well.

There appears to be a loophole for the idiot drivers who gets high aggression points than precision points and want to appear as though they are precision drivers, they can just go into quick race and run solo laps around any track and get precision points for staying on the racing line and hitting the corners properly to rack up their precision points...

I'm definitely enjoying NFS so far and right now have no major gripes at all about this game.

Nice to see a few people picked this up. I'm sure EA will be happy, after all they just want you to buy the game, they could care less if you put it down and sell it after Forza 3 or GT5 are released.

Only the PC version will enjoy life after production has stopped and others will be able to pick up the Greatest Hits version for half its current price or a used for even less.

Early Adopters always pay more - Have at it fellas....

Just before the CL football I istalled the game and did a quick lap in TA mode in the 1st car I bought (Ford). I have no super PC so you have to do it with a 30FPS 512-384 video, wich I recorded with fraps on lap 4 or 5 around Brands Hatch. (all aids off, G25, auto clutch off)

For those worried, don't it feels good on my g25 ;) Full impressions when I played the game for a few days ;)
