There is a new baseline MX5 setup. Needs to be reloaded from the setup page. It was said, easier to drive but still fun. I have not tried it.

For example: imtheboss could say Patrocles or redmalloc referred him as he helped him out with the question.

That is a really nice idea :)

Nice to see Lotus 49 coming to iRacing. I was thinking of buying a copy of Grad Prix legends off of Amazon and trying to getting it working on my PC. Also rFactor 2 looks to have the old 60 and 70 Grand Prix cars in it once it's released. Now all I have to do is wait about a year to get the Lotus 49 on iRacing.

For the 1st time ever I think I've actually earned positive iRating in a Road race (Ovals has always been the polar opposite). I hope this marks the end of my steady downwards spiral.

I really gotta work on getting my 'racing' nerves in check. I just get so nervous in these Riley DPs. They fly around these corners so darn fast :scared:

I would totally drop down to a Ford Mustang but those things just dont handle as well too me (figures right it has no downforce like the Riley DPs)

I ran a MX5 race a couple of days ago. I think it was supposed to have the new and improved MX5 baseline to work with the NTM? The car seemed a little harder to control than the OTM but easier than the day of the recent upgrade.
I did not read all the notes on the NTM, but in my hands I could really notice what appeard to be progressive tire wear during the race as I completed more and more laps?

Yeah I think I drove it briefly with the new baseline. Atm I believe I liked the MX-5 better with the old tire model. But I still havent spent much time with it so maybe it will grow on me. I was a little disheartened when I spun out after syncing to the new baseline. I cant recall this happening much with the OTM. I felt like I could do no wrong previously. Its a lot less forgiving now I would say

This still sort of makes me question the direction the devs plan on going. They keep trying to strive for realism which is admirable. However, we are not in real cars. So we don't have the g-forces, etc that a real driver can feel through the steering column and their seat. So in the end I just wonder if this sim is 2x harder than the real thing is my point

I'm always for the sim moving forward towards realism. I think the NTM will be, but it's in its early stages and you can definitely tell driving on it. But assuming they keep improving it I think it'll be good.

I gave my dad a go of iRacing tonight and he explains a Cobra on a race track to be completely unforgiving at high speed. (over 120km/h). On iRacing he turned into a corner at 120km/h in the MX-5 as it rode across a bump and immediately it got light and oversteery which is most likely realistic in that situation. However, he thought he was going much much slower and complained not only about not being able to feel the car going but not knowing how fast he was going. The sense of speed is something that will always be a struggle to achieve in a sim, but I think that he makes a good point in saying that sometimes you don't realise how fast you are actually going in iRacing.

Ok when i join iracing what should i get. Im planning on running there nascar world championship. Do i pay for my membership and then have to buy the cup car later? Or is there something i can by with the membership that comes with it?

@Mad I agree I think thats one of the area Shift 2 Unleashed got right you really felt the sensation of speed a little better with the wind howling in your ears, trees and background going blurry, and leaves/dirt flying all around. But still not quite like the real thing. What I refer to from my experience is driving around in an american muscle car with a lot of horsepower under the hood. So ofc you dont quite get that experience

@Boss, If you want to just fast track you could just rush through Legends rookie to hit Class D. Just sort of hang back and you should hit podium pretty easily. Just don't wreck or make mistakes (basically sit back and lol at others). Then you'll be caught up too me in Ovals in bout a week or two after promotions or fast tracking. At this point you buy either the Late model (NTM) or Nascar Sk. LM is closer to the cup car tho and much more popular (at least pre-NTM changes)

So go LM and buy 1 or 2 tracks. Fast track up to Class C and then you'll be at the trucks which seems like good practice for the Cup car. *I am guessing from briefly watching Nascar Truck series on TV, I'm a Class D Oval, Class C Road

Be careful purchasing the oval short tracks. None of them appear to be shared with the Nascar world series if that's your only main goal

I was thinking about that too recently. Someone was talking about driving the SRF IRL vs the sim. If you've driven it you'll know the weight balance makes oversteer a consideration for essentially every corner. He was saying that IRL you are clued into what to do unconsciously by the inertial effects you feel. So although you perform the same car control in game and IRL, its a conscious effort in game and an intuitive one irl.

However, my preference is for realism in the physics model. If it makes it harder due to lack of sensory input so be it. For me personally, it gives me a much greater sense of accomplishment to feel that I am gaining real world skills rather than mastering a video game.

As an example I have completely given up on GT5 suspension tuning. I spent a LOT of time trying to understand it and I never really got it from a real world point of view. As an engineer, with reasonable effort I feel that I should be able to lol. So it feels artificial and disconnected from the real world and I lose interest.

The sense of speed is something that will always be a struggle to achieve in a sim, but I think that he makes a good point in saying that sometimes you don't realise how fast you are actually going in iRacing.

I am sure you already know,. but in case you don't you can adjust the angle of view which effects the sense of speed. I started with the recommended angle and tweaked it till it felt right to me and then judging speed and distance felt more "right".

Out of interest do you use 1 screen and if so what FOV?

I've been playing with the graphics settings and must say iRacing is sooooo pretty when turned up.(not completely, but almost) Wow, I had no idea what I was missing. Its unbelievable how nice it looks. 👍

I'm going to post up my laptop specs and some interesting findings while messing about with the settings vs. my gpu temps in the technical thread.

I use one 19" screen with a FOV of 55º. When I first reduced the FOV it was really weird but after you get used to it it's much better, the corners' angles look more realistic.

I've noticed from your Youtube videos you use a wider FOV than me, try using iRacing FOV calculator to see what settings it suggests to you.

Sure realism is well and good for all us dedicated subscribers that really dont have to ever drive the MX-5 anyway (I know I never do). But I am more concerned about new players that come to the sim, spin all over the place in the mx-5, and quit out of frustration. I'll mess around with it some more when I get a chance but I always liked the Legends car much better anyways. That reminds me I still havent tried it since the NTM was introduced... I should go check right quick

i tend to drive the cars the way they are meant to be, ie with 6speed and clutch + heal toe, or sequential with heal toe, just like i have to do in real life, but ill always be slower then everyone else.

If i run every single car with paddle shifter and left foot braking - i can run 1 sec - 1.2 sec of world record lap times ...

However, like live music said, i run iracing or other sims, not to be great at that sim, rather keeping in shape for real life racing :)

Yeah I use a 22" screen with FOV of 65º. I previously used 75º but have since slowly been moving it forward. Furtherest i'll go is probably 60º though.

Thanks for your feedback. 👍

Just a question guys, anyone have a motion sim and any comments on the feel of it?

Just finished my exams so contemplating building a motion sim over the next few months if money permits, want to make sure it's worth it though. I'm thinking 2-3 DOF

Tried hte Legends car with the NTM. Feels good but dont like the default, fixed setup atm. I see I will have to start all over learning it

Still dont like what they've done to the Late model with the NTM. At least the devs admit there is a problem with it.

Starting to get a better feel for the Grand Am Rolex Series. Getting to know some of these guys and they are sharing lots of setups and tips with me. This community is so awesome. My Road iRating is slowly creeping upwards. Hopefully one of these tracks I'll get a podium finish.

yea man I have to agree, I absolutely hate hate hate the NTM setup for the legends ... all I get is understeer and there is no drama on exit, in fact no drama anywhere unless I dip into the corner and spin out completely, before it was a balancing act but now the choice is death or boredom ... its completely boring in every aspect of driving now.

The NTM on the MX5 was almost the exact opposite experience for me... the NTM made it not only harder to drive but more exciting and on-edge.. haven't tried the new setup but I don't' really want too - the first race I tried on the NTM I won from the back of the grid...

but I've been more or less satisfied with all of the NTM experiences except this on Legends which is really awful ....I've been asking around and everyone says it was just more fun before - hopefully they will adjust the setup for this car.

Oh man am I loving the Silverado races. Just got to class c license and did two races. Started 15th in first one(no quali) and finished 5th. Then the second started 6th(did quali) and finished 2nd. The second race was a five truck battle for the win. It so was awesome. The pit strategy and cautions make it very interesting. Plus just about every race goes official with a decent size field.

I didn't like the NTM either at first. The NTM is pretty good feeling though on the cars that can be adjusted. I've got my truck dialed in for race trim at Michigan and its a joy to drive. First few laps it can be a bit loose, but after about 5-10 laps it comes in and can be drivin hard.

Funny thing is, I didn't do hardly any oval racing till the past week. Oval racing didn't impress me 5 months ago. Didn't like turning to right just as much as I was turning to the left to get through the corners. Felt like I was always chasing the car. I like the fact that you turn more to the left than right with the NTM. Just feels better imo. I definitely think iRacing is on to something with the NTM. Even though it may not feel quite right on every car, with some time I think it'll all work itself out through updates and just getting more familiar with it.

So I finally got had a chance to log back onto iracing last night after a very, very long time. It's a shame it's taken me getting sick to get the chance to be home and get online to do some testing, but man did I miss it! The NTM on the SRF is great with a little tweaking, really looking forward to running this season, even though I did miss the first week.

I bought the skippy on the NTM last season for a little testing, and now that I've driven the SRF and MX5 on the NTM and have a more rounded view, I have to say it's really growing on me. I hated seeing the superfast laps where the car was thrown around unrealistically; I simrace to replicate reality as much as I can, even if that means being a little slower because I use H-pattern and/or right foot braking in cars it should be used. The NTM really rewards a smooth driving style, and I'm really enjoying it, even in the MX5, which is trickier to drive.

Feels good to be back.

Speaking of the SRF here's a video from last night's second race in the private league championship I'm running:

Finished in 6th on the first race. Second race has a reversed grid from 1st to 8th of the first race so I started in 3rd, finished in 4th.

Today I'll do some more practice with the Lotus in Oulton Park, maybe even try to race.

I still haven't tried out the SRF NTM version. I'll have to make sure to check it out at some point

I see in this morning's update they've updated some cars & tracks along with the client so I am curious what's changed.

Q: Is there a schedule when the services come down? It always seem like they take it down out of the blue when I'm in the middle of browsing through the tracks, etc

Yea they always let you know before hand when it will go down.
Check just below the status bar for your game. (the one that turns red if you must update the game)

Very interesting article from iRacing on scanning tracks, a really good read and lets you know what´s coming etc.

Auto Club Speedway (aka Fontana) – Not scanned yet – rumors about it changing.
Autodromo Jose Carlos (aka Interlagos) – Working on getting a scan, some progress. Would love to get this track done.
Kansas Speedway – Making sure no changes to track before scanning.
Langley Speedway – Scanned, will finish this track in 2012.
Long Beach – Production was started and stopped as some members know. The spline is completely done. We will pick up working on this track again in 2012! It is big so not promising releasing in 2012!
Lucas Oil Raceway (aka IRP) – Production has started.
Miller Motorsports Park – On list to do at some point.
New Jersey Motorsports Park – Scanned, on list to do at some point
New Smyrna Speedway – Releasing next month – December 2011 – both night and day versions!
Oran Park Raceway – Will finish in 2012.
Tsukuba Circuit – Some production has started; would expect it will be done in 2012.
Willow Springs International Motorsports Park – Scanned, some production work done, but put on hold for now.
Circuit Zolder – Spline started; will finish in 2012.
Twing Ring Motegi is next road course that will be done and, I might add, a great track!
Daytona rescan is also coming before the Daytona 500.

Earned my 1st podium finish tonight in the Grand Am Rolex series. Started 3rd and finished 2nd. Race was a lot of fun. I gained +75 iRating from that race alone and +.93 SR in which vaulted me straight into Class B license :dopey: (I didnt even know you could gain so much from 1 race but it makes sense cause I had 0 incidents)

Funny thing is when I 1st came to iRacing I balked at the length of rookie races. I thought 25 mins was much too long. Now I'm doing 50 min races these days and I appreciate the strategy, consistency, & focus on clean racing. I admit though it can be tough if you wreck right at the beginning and then you have to use strategy how you will deal with your wrecked vehicle. Do you stop to do a full repair? Do you keep going? What if you wreck 5 mins before the race ends? Do you stop to do a full repair? Great fun 👍

There is also fuel management, etc. I usually run with a little less fuel than the other guys since I tend not to burn through gas as fast as they do. Would be interesting if the races where a little longer to also make tires and pit strategy come into play a bit more

Loving this sim so much. So addictive....

Congratulations on your podium!

The .93 SR is probably because you went from 2.xx to 3.xx or from 3.xx to 4.xx. When this happens you get an extra .40 SR I believe. But this still makes it for a .53 SR gain on your part, which is a lot. 👍

I did a Lotus race in Oulton Park yesterday, it was great fun. I had tried a race there last Wednesday already but ruined my car on the 3rd lap, so this time my main goal was to finish the race.

I had a good start but on the second lap my game froze up for a few seconds and I went to the grass. Managed not to hit the wall and got back to the track, but lost three positions in the process. I spent the rest of the race glued behind the driver in front just waiting for a mistake from him which never happened. I was a bit faster than him but in Oulton Park it's pretty much impossible to do a safe overtake.

But overall it was fun, I liked driving the Lotus here.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention +.40 SR came from crossing over from 3.78 SR to 4+.

At least you got in a lap or two before you wrecked. I just caused a domino last night in the pace lap.... There really is no proper excuse but I thought the guy in front was maintaining his pace, accelerating into the corner. But instead he slams on his brakes because the guy infront of him slams on his brakes. This causes a chain reaction whereas I slam on mine as well. But I didnt have enough time to avoid a collision and smacked him hard. The poor Ford Mustang behind me slams into the back of me at this point causes me to go into another lane and that Mustang smacks me.

ugh, mass chaos lol. My car was so damaged I had no choice but to quit. My 'pit crew' just coulnd't get me back on the road.

Good news is I only lost a tiny bit of SR and iRating. Plus I am the leader in my division and I am starting to place better overall in the season

Trying to focus on learning Infineon now which is the next track. One of the fastest drivers gave me a replay to study so I will be focusing on that

Congrats on the podium Richard! Keep it up man, you'll be winning left and right before you know it!

I've had a very, very poor couple of weeks back in the service since starting with the Skippy. My SR and iRating has gone south very very quickly and I'm kinda annoyed. In 4 races I've been smashed off the road 3 times that ended with me back in the pits for repair and all but ended any chance of getting decent results, and I even had to quit one race because the repair time was just absurd. In the other, I slipped off on the first corner to avoid an incident and through my own fault ended up in the pits. I did fight my way back from a over lap down on 16 drivers back to 5th, and that chase was really thrilling even though I dropped off on the last lap and ended up 6th.

I was expecting nice clean racing now that I'm out of rookie, but man it's been hard! It's my own fault really, even though I'm about 1.5/2 seconds off of the WR times in practice, I didn't qualify for the first two races, and couldn't get a decent time in the other times and always started in the mid/low pack. I just hope I can get it together and make progress, as the skippy is tricky but fun to drive.
