Thanks for the opinions on the SM and Radical.

My goal is to get to C 4.0 SR so I can race the Lotus. Right now I am around D 3.7 from there I wanted to pick the most fun D 4.0 option and the Radical certainly sounds lie it. People seem to have strong and differing opinions on the SM but everyone seems to agree the Radical is a lot of fun.

My next purchase should be the HPD as I plan on racing the Intel GT Series on february. Are any of you racing it too, or will?

Edit: BTW, I just saw a great promo code for new members. One month subscription + Spa + HPD for $15. The promo code is PR-INTELGT.

I'll be going for the regional finals in the Intel GT series next week. I think it's definitely achievable for me and hopefully I can get all the way to world finals.

However, what ever they did to the tyre model in the last update completely stuffed the LMP.....

People say the last update ruined the MX5 as well, but as time goes on, people are liking it more and more and saying it is even more realistic now and just as fast as before. Just like when real-world series change to a new spec-tire, the drivers have to adapt and overcome. :)

Yeah the SM is pretty fun. Not quite as easy to drive as the F1 which is what I think is what allures the iRacing crowd (hard-to-drive vehicles). I've noticed they're nuts over the Skippy which is extremely hostile to nobbery. Still to this day, I still have trouble with that car. I find most of the advanced cars easier to drive with practice and easier to close in on leading times. But with the Skippy..... I admire anyone that can master that car. I really do. With the Riley DP, I find my mastery of the car varies from track-to-track

But the Skippy. That car is just a monster. People like Livemusic are surely destined for great things for mastering that monster

Btw livemusic the SRF reminds me strongly of the Skippy so I see why you would like that car as well

Where are you reading this? Everyone I have spoken to and everyone's posts I have read love the most recent update to the car.

 not reading it.... I just tried it again and it's completely ridiculous how you have to drive the car. Driving straight gets you about a 2:04-2:05 at Spa on the fixed setup. Four wheel drifting and every corner gets you 2:01 and 2:02's. Some cars I can understand four wheel drifting is fast in real life (street cars and some production cars etc) but an LMP car..... 👎

Anyway, I know the NTM is a Work in progress and they seem to be improving some aspects of it all the time. Plus talking to Shane Van Gisbergen, apparently the V8 Supercar on the NTM is almost completely realistic. :D

Interesting point of view mad. I enjoyed some casual practice sessions with that car too (HPD) but I have no idea what the real thing should feel like. Never observed the real car in a race or anything

To me, street cars and touring cars and to some extent GT cars should be able to slide (progressively, street cars more than GT cars). But by watching motorsport on TV, I don't think high downforce cars such as LMP's and Formula 1/Indycars should be able to slide or 4 wheel drift at high speed. Sure at low speed, but high speed.... no.

But as I said, the MX5 and those slower touring cars are fantastic on the NTM (as are the NASCAR's). They all seem to handle well, a slight bit of sliding on corner exit and the slides aren't too easy to catch. I really like them, just not the LMP....

I'm very very competitive in the HPD this season. Like beating Div 1 people. But you certainly don't see me "drifting" through the corners. Check out the vids on my youtube.

That seems like a weird combo for new racers. Other than practice they wont be able to user the car or track?

In my short experience with both they seem to oversteer while coasting through turns. That right there means a new driving style which isn't coming to me very naturally lol

I've learned in a year on GT5 that you brake before and gradually release into the turn going too fast. Apex. Understeer. Then roll on the throttle.

My style with the SRF/Skippy is to stop before the turn begins. Get out of the car to look at the turn. Ponder it while motioning with my hands how I will go through. Sometimes I make engine & tire sounds while doing the motions for added visualization. Then get back in and turn in with light throttle and gradually increase gas through the turn. This leads to safe laps but a bit off the pace :)

I don't really like the SRF that much, I'm just racing it because that's the car the private league I run in is using this season. But with the NTM the SRF became better and easier to drive IMO.

It's just sometimes people who migrate from other sims to iRacing complain about the basic cars being too slow, so I think that's a good combo for those people to see how the faster cars are.

Plus, they can race the Intel GT Series, which requires no license.

:lol: I haven't driven those two cars and that doesn't make me in a hurry to drive them either. Thats awesome with the engine and tire sounds.:lol:

Interesting I still haven't messed with the MX-5 very much but I know the Late Model is feeling much better now that they're worked out the kinks. I was able to get in a race at Iowa with it the other day. Everyone drove pretty much perfectly clean, etc. It was a nice break from Grand Am Rolex series which is fraught with lots of danger on the average race.

If anything, I think the latest build is great with the MX5. The NTM for me has made the MX5 even more fun to drive.

The MX-5 feels much more like it did when I drove it now than it did before. has that prominent understeer unless you know what to do :D

Just finished my week on a high note. Only had to run one race in both the Prototype and GT Fixed and non fixed series to get my points. 1st in the Fixed race and 2nd in the non fixed. Non fixed was very close. Ran 4th for half of the race, then the attrition started to take hold of the top 4 positions and I then received 1st place. Made my pitstop early to get out of running through traffic, but the guy in second was able to jump me. He was just behind me the entire race. Finished 4 tenths behind him. Very close after 45 minutes of racing.

Sitting second in Div 3 points on the non fixed, and 12 in fixed. I should move up in Fix at the end of the season, didn't run the first week so i'll have less points to drop :D

On the MX5, don't forget that when the NTM first arrived on it, the car was messed up. They updated the baseline setup and that resolved the main issues.

I made it to the Radical. What a car! I'll need to put in a lot of practice time before I can reliably get it around a track but it is lots of fun. Going between the Radical and the Lotus is very interesting and I love the combination.

To me, the Radical feels a bit like the SRF and Skippy in that you use the throttle to keep the back end in - but it has so much power that you can easily kick it out into a spin, erm I mean power slide. There is a fascinating interplay between steering and throttle.

I have renamed the Radical to the "Loss of Control (2x)"

V8 Supercars Online Series live broadcast going live at 9:45pm AEST (10 minutes). Normally is a 4000+ SOF with some of Australia's best sim racers competing. I won race 1 at 7:45pm so hopefully can repeat it this time!

If you want to watch the broadcast or even race (if you have iracing). V8 Supercars race in 10 minutes at Suzuka.

www.v8sonline.com.au for the broadcast

ah guess its already over. I see there is a vid of the suzuka race here I'll click on that

edit: Nice win! Watching the highlights

Anyone watching the Race of Champions? Scott Speed just won the oval portion, now they are setting up for Watkins Glen for the road portion in the MX5. There is a live stream from the iRacing members site right now. They are getting ready to start the qualifying session.

Just had my first race... and I crashed... twice. I cannot downshift properly, but I suppose that's what I deserve for constantly using the paddle shifters in GT5. (Too bad clutching is such a huge disadvantage in GT5.)

While you are learning the race line and basic feel of the car, you can turn on "Auto-Blip" in the Shift-Aids options menu. This will basically rev-match on downshift for you, this does come with a small speed penalty, but not nearly as much as crashing does, haha. Once you get comfortable with the car, you can start working on stuff like heel-toe downshifting and other such things with the aid off.

Don't feel so bad in my first prototype & gt race at lime rock other night I crashed after 8 laps and had to retire. That's just what happens to us normal folk we get slayed in our 1st race or so. Give it more tries. You'll get the hang of it

I used to auto-blip the heck out of the mx-5 too. Luckily the better cars (like the Riley DP or HPD or even Skippy) are much easier to shift w/o aids

I hate when I'm taking a race or two very slow to get my safety rating back up and some douche who doesn't know how to pass a slower car just rams into me from behind. Then another douche also doesn't know how to pass and goes way to fast to the outside of a corner and spins in front of me. 8x right there with those two and loss of 0.31 SR. Ugh!

I've had it in the past at Lime Rock, after the last turn to get out of the way I drift over to the right hand side of the racing line.

Only for the faster car to attempt an overtake passing my right hand side, instead of just holding back a split second to fly past on the left.

Had one incident the other day, at Okyama short. I was the faster car, the slowest driver moved over so decided to pass on the left, for him to only pull back too early, thus taking me out - luckily there was no damage suffered at all, no pit required and no issue whilst driving.

In Grand Am Rolex (Riley) & Prototype & GT series (HPD) I've found it very effective to communicate with the other drivers when the situation looks hairy. These are the races I actually get out of it unscathed too. Like my last Prototype race at Lime Rock I had only 1 incident (1x off track) and placed 4th.

-.30 SR sounds pretty high tho. I had a bad race where I tookout a Ford GT with my HPD and had to retire. But even that race was only like -.2 SR.

Yeah it can get tough reclaiming SR cause they dont hand out very much in Time Trials and Qualifying in comparison to races. But I still try to do at least one TT per week to help me focus on driving fast & clean.

Anyway, I would recommend Voice chat if you're finding out you're having issues. They may not respond back but most folks have it enabled where they can hear ya. I've never had an incident where I've broadcasted my intents over voice.

* Now passing a slower guy to take his 'spot' may get hairy. I never tried using voice for that. But if he's way slower you can still try. Yesterday as I worked my way up the field I passed a slower HPD and worked out the overtake over voice. Turned out his car was hurt. But that might have been a rare case. I'd suspect in most situations you'll get a fight on your hands.

Not a bad idea to use voice chat, I quite often say something like "going right" or "I'll pass you on the right" while i'm going through a corner. Just stops any sort of confusion from occurring.

My iRacing week has so far consisted of the Intel GT Series Regional finals for the Australasian region. Currently sitting 3rd in the points so that should comfortably keep me in the top 20. It's been awesome racing against some of the best sim racers Australia has such as Luke McLean, Ben Cornett, Danny Davison, Darren Marsh and several others. Not everyday you get to have a fight with some DWC stars so i've loved every second of it. The idea of course is to try and get to the world final which is definitely possible, but beating the european guys will be difficult (Greger, Klaus, Hugo etc).

Hotlap being uploaded overnight, managed to hit a 2:02.0 on the fixed setup in qualifying (only a few hundredths off what McLean did :D).

Thanks. I've gotten a bit better ready.
What makes those other cars easier to shift? Can someone explain the different types of transmissions available and what their differences are?

Is there any way you can flash the lights to signal if you about to pass a slower car? In other sims, this worked for me since I have no kind of voice chat.
