Oh no. I think it's happened; I can't play GT5 anymore! It's everything I've always dreamed GT5 would be.

I've figured out how to half decently drive the MX-5, with two back-to-back wins at Lime Rock (in the lower split of course), and the races were great. I have no doubt the experience will better as my career progresses.

The only thing I'll miss from GT5 is the great crew of regular drivers I run with in leagues here on GTPlanet. If I can find a group to consistently run with in iRacing, my sim needs will be complete.

Haha, "hook, line, and sink 'er." :lol: Same thing happened to me 6 months ago. I played a little gt5 last night for the first time in awhile and it was meh at best. Yup, iRacing really is that good. Always have liked the accomplishment feeling that Iracing seems to give. I'll be an iRacing subscriber for life from here. Still enjoy the occasional simbin racing titles, but iRacing is where its at.👍

Also, I'm seeing more and more GTPer's on iRacing everyday.👍

Had an overall terrible night myself. MX5 at Lime Rock. Highlight of it all was being in 2nd place, I see a yellow flag. 1st spun just after turn 4, on the straight before the Uphill. He's on the left, 90 degrees to the track, facing the wall. Stopped. I don't bother to slow and plan to go by him at race speed (3rd is right behind me) at the right edge of the track. What does 1st do? He reverses onto the track. 90mph into his quarter panel. 🤬

just realised how awesome the feeling in iracing is when using the G25 and the CSP together! which i could use this setup for GT5 aswell!

Is it better than the GT3 RS V2?

I've driven the G27, G25, and GT3 RS V2. The wheels themselves feel almost the same. The Logitech was a bit quieter, had a larger diameter wheel, but the area that you hold felt much too small for my hands. Sort of like a GT-R steering wheel.

Yeah, happens quite often in rookie races. Just use this as a way to remember when you go off track to stay in place until you know you are clear (F3 menu comes in handy for this).

...
I used to auto-blip the heck out of the mx-5 too. Luckily the better cars (like the Riley DP or HPD or even Skippy) are much easier to shift w/o aids

...
What makes those other cars easier to shift? Can someone explain the different types of transmissions available and what their differences are?

Due to selling my G27 to a buddy, I'm about to be without a shifter. I'm not too sure what kind of transmission the various popular road racing cars have in iRacing, so I don't know what kind of shifter to buy.

Do many cars have H shifters? How about sequential? Or do a lot of the cars use paddle shifters?

Guess I'll ask again, Is there any way you can flash the lights to signal if you're about to pass a slower car?

I'd love to see that feature incorporated in the service!
As far as I'm aware, no. I generally use voice-chat to let a slower car know I'm coming past :)

Problem is not everyone uses the voice chat and a lot of people simply mutes it.

I think most seem to have voice enabled but no mic. Cause everyone at least responds too me via keyboard at the least. And I never type :D

I do bind mute / mute driver just in case someone goes way off topic

had a great first race in the HPD and Spa today, started 5th, came in 4th. Was quit happy about my result. Fast lap was a 2.04.2. Its still way off pace but im happy with that time.

About to upload a video from a multi car crash in the Mustang at Lime Rock Park + commentary.

Will post it in the vids section

cheers

I believe when shifting manually, if the car has sequential you're able to use the paddles. The cars that I know of that have H-shifters are the Miata, Solstice, Mustang, and the NASCAR cars. There maybe more, but those are the ones I know for sure have H patterns.

Have you also owned the DFGT? I setup my new G27 today to replace the DFGT and I'm finding the feedback not as good.

i cant answer this question 100% since im using my real life kart wheel on my G25, unlike the tiny stock wheel.

However, the wheel turns quicker and i have a much more precise FFB feeling from the G25.
My G27 also turns very quick compared to my DFGT and sort of feels easier to drive but the FFB is not as good as my DFGT. I can't feel understeer as well. It could be my wheel FFB is broken, not sure so might ask in the sim racing hardware section.

For your Fanatec, in the settings on the wheel, do you have it set to 100%? If not then set it at 100% on the wheel and lower FFB strength in the settings on the game. It should make your wheel feel better.

i know what youre talking about and i did that and it felt good, but i still prefere the G25 steering motor though.

On the other hand, when i used my gt3rsv2 my csp pedals were acting all weird, i never had full throttle on pc or ps3...

Quite a lot of alien fast drivers use Logitech products, maybe it is because of the wheel speed ;).

Strange, does it work fine with the G25 on PC?

Speaking of sequential shifters, I just took the Legends car out for the first time and I'm not quite sure how you're supposed to shift it. I have a G25 so my sequential shift "buttons" are assigned to pulling and pushing the shifter in its sequential mode. But do I also need to use the clutch? I can shift into 2nd sometimes just pulling the shifter, and otherwise I can hold the shifter back and as soon as I push the clutch it shifts. Downshifting is a little odd as well.

You can shift up without clutch only at very high revs in Legends car. Near or at limiter I believe. Otherwise yes, have to use clutch. Not sure of downshifting though. Never really downshifted the few times I've used the car.:lol:

Fast drivers are going to be fast regardless of what wheel they use. I think this year's iRacing Oval Champion uses a basic Logitech DFGT setup. In the hands of the right person, a nice wheel/pedal setup can make things easier for them and smoother, but a wheel alone will not make you slower or faster unless it coincides with your driving style.

Thanks for the reply. It's good to know about being able to use paddles for sequential transmissions.

One thing I've never figured out is whether shifting with a sequential requires a clutch. Always? Never? Sometimes?

I went on iRacing.com to get the transmission type for the following cars. I'll comment in blue how I think I'm supposed to shift with the car. Someone please let me know if I'm incorrect.

Williams-Toyota F1:
Williams 7-speed electro-hydraulically actuated, semi-automatic, seamless shift
---> Paddles. No Clutch required.

Ford GT:
6 speed sequential unit with pneumatic paddle shift
---> Paddles. No Clutch required.

HPD ARX-01C:
HPD-Hewland 6-speed sequential unit with manual paddle-operated gearshift
---> Paddles. No Clutch required.

Radical SR8:
Powertec P tec 6 speed transaxle
---> Paddles. No Clutch required.

Star Mazda:
6 Speed Sequential
---> Sequential shifter. No clutch required.

Corvette C6.R:
X- Trac 6 Speed Sequential
---> Sequential shifter. No clutch required.

Skip Barber:
Hewland LJS 5-Speed Sequential
Downshifts: Clutchless downshifts. No blipping.
Upshifts: Clutchless, sometimes bouncing off limiter and sometimes lifting.

Riley Prototype:
5-Speed Xtrac transmission
---> Sequential shifter. No clutch required.

Mazda MX-5:
5-speed manual
---> H-shifter. Clutch required.

Lotus 79:
Hewland FG400 5 speed transmission
---> H-shifter. Lift to shift; clutch normally not required.

Okay, that's kind of what I was finding. I was messing with it at the Legends Oval at Charlotte. I don't look forward to racing it there, or anywhere, possibly.

Just drove a LOT of laps in the Radical on Oulton this past week. Fabulous car and track combination. Still not up to a real race in it - and especially on Oulton. How do you pass on that track?! On the boards it sounds like there was plenty of wrecks and incidents, so I am glad to have skipped it. I really don't want my first out to be drama filled.

I highly recommend both this car and track in case anyone is considering them.

Funny, I have had this question for some time. It never occurred to me to look it up lol. Thanks for doing this.

On the Lotus 79, the forum folks say that Mario Andretti said he did not use the clutch except in limited situations. In the drivers guide, it says to simply lift to shift and not use the clutch.

I'm an auto-blipper, so I have not tried it.

Mind pointing me in the direction of this guide. I looked around the iRacing site but didn't find it. Thanks.

I'll have to remember to play with the LEgends NTM some more. I used to auto blip it back but nowadays I dont want to pay the speed penalty. So I would use a clutch

might not need to ever downshift Legends with the NTM. Maybe it never needed to be downshifted. I was so bloody close to the leading times on OTM just havent had the strength to start all over again :yuck:

Skippy normally requires a lift to shift, or you can hold the shifter back and let it bounce off the limiter into the next gear on upshifts.

I hadn't ventured into the car subforums. Thanks!

imho the iRacing forums are poorly moderated. So some threads get out of control but the subforums dedicated to specific series can have some cool community to them. Mainly I look through the Radical and Lotus 79. While slow they are friendly enough.
