It would be interesting to hear from any GTP members from Argentina or South America and their thoughts on this issue. Its clear that most of us UK'ers are in agreement that this is an argument that should have ended long ago when the Fawklanders decided they didn't want to be Argentinian. (plus the fact the Argentinian claim is highly dubious anyway)

I'm wondering what Argentinians think about it, whether they agree with the government stance (and why) or whether they also think its a big waste of time and an unnecessary distraction.

If Argentina really want the Islands, maybe it's about time to put up or shut up.

They are certainly vocal at the moment, I'm sure the UN will grant them the discussions, UK will tell them what's what, they will they get sent away with their tail between their legs.

This is only happening because it is the 30th anniversary and to the Argentinian people the Government needs to look like they are doing something about it.

The Russians. They need to decide who owns what part of Poland. Then the UK and Spain need to fight over the eastern United States. But not before the Italians claim to be Roman and reclaim everything.

I'm thinking that it's a pointless thing she's doing, for a couple of reasons:

1 - Our government is probably doing it because of the oil. Otherwise, it wouldn't give a crap about the island.
2 - Our government most likely does it because some people are still butthurt over a war we initiated and which they initially supported. If there hadn't been any war, I would say none of these claims would happen.

If you ask me, let the British keep the islands and let us never talk about this subject again. But I'm not in charge.



Also, I still don't get why some of you think a war may possibly break up. Our government is not as stupid as to think we could possibly win.

As has been said, the Argentinians have been sabre rattling about the the 'Malvinas' for years and only use it as a way to stir up support for elections. Its the Falkland islanders that will decide their fate and they unilaterally want to remain British.
I doubt it will come to war and if it does we are many times stronger in regards to a standing force in the Islands than we were back in 82, back then we had a handful of Royal Marines and an artic patrol vessel. Now we always have an extremely capable modern frigate or missile destroyer, support ship (RFA), patrol vessels, well over 10 times the amount of troops, typhoon fighters and sundry other support units. I would also bet my life that there is always a cheeky little sub in the area too.
A war would be wasteful, pointless and unwinnable for Argentina.

There is always a reason for a war. Governments don't go to war because they think it will be fun.

And don't be so sure about Argentina not being strong enough sure we have more on the island but we only have 100k men IIRC (as much as germany was limited to in the versailes treaty) in our entire army and thats shrinking thanks to the consevitives.

Argentina is roughly 32nd on the military power list while the UK is 5th, this list doesnt take into account the quality of our personnel being much higher than the Argentinians due to better training across the board (including reservists). We also have a lot more 'men' than 100,000 not that it would require the entire british army to be mobilized.
We would defeat them if attacked although it would be costly due to the distances involved. Labour were just as hopeless with underfunding the military as the conservatives if not worse, at least they now get half decent equipment!

30 years on, the current Argentine President still claims that the British occupation is unjust.

Argentinean politicians have used the Malvinas as a political instrument for decades. I know a few argentineans ( and used to work with a bunch of them ) and can tell that most of middle-aged hermanos are extremely nationalistic and proud of their country.

Cristina is using the nationalist feelings to picture herself as a leader who zeals for a sovereign and powerful country, she recently called the Falklands a "Colonial enclave". Couple that to promising oil prospections near the islands and you have an excuse to start an argument.

This type of political games are traditional from latin american governors, what actually is sad is to see Brazil taking positions in the war.

It's clear what's really in dispute: petroleum. The rumours of war come along the explicit denial of the argentinean government in taking over YPF yet again, and let's not forget that the region has already shown promising results in deep sea oil prospections, much like the brazilian coastline.

There are many interests revolving around the subject, however, the main characters of the story, the inhabitants of Stanley are almost unanimously british. Which to me, is a sufficiently compelling argument for keeping things just the way they are.

And to the surprise of no-one, they have almost unanimously voted to remain a British Overseas Territory. Just three votes were against. Not three percent, three votes.

The right to self-determination is something Argentina should recognise, even if they don't agree with the result.

This is a tedious affair which I assume is detracting from some real issues in Argentine politics, and is not at all helped by idiots like Sean Penn.
