Probably not the best term to use referring to thugs in Hackney, Tottenham, Deptford...

*googles term*

I'm about a mile from where the Liverpool disturbances took place last night (they don't really warrant the "riot" tag), I had to drive through the affected area to get to a meeting (that was cancelled because of the trouble) and saw a few burnt-out cars and some damage to property - shops, mostly.

It's just an opportunity to kick off for these people. They have no real grievances, no axe to grind, no political agenda... they're bored chavs who fancy making trouble. The irony of it all is, if they were pressed about why they did it, they would cite the lack of investment in their area, lack of jobs, the lack of things to do, but who is going to invest in their area, build nice new community centres, start businesses employing the local population when the locals will burn them down at the slightest provocation? They're really shooting themselves in the foot here.

The thing is, this all stems from the fact that people think society owes them something just by virtue of them being born. They spend their school lives mesing about and not getting an actual education, because the state will look after them in the way it looks after their parents, then complain when they have no money and no prospects. All this is exsaserbated by them looking at rappers, footballers, etc. who have it all and are pretty much worshipped as gods by our society - they get angry because they don't have what their heroes have and then they kick off at the drop of a hat.

I feel sorry for the hard working people who are losing their jobs, their businesses and their cars while all this is going on. They aren't causing these scumbags problems, so why should they suffer? The police have got the ****ty end of the stick in all this as well - if they go in, batons swinging, they'll be condemned for over-reacting and provocking the situation and if they try to stand off, they'll be condemmed for not doing enough.

These ********s just need a slap and to be told to sort their lives out.

+2...although they need more than a slap; they need something more serious than a "badge of courage" for taking part in chaos.

That reminds me of Frankie Boyle wanting ASBO's to be called 'Bender Badges'.

The English blame immigrants for 'ruining their country' and what not, but what are our own citizens doing now?

British, not English.
They don't have a monopoly on stupidity.

They'll still insist it is probably since from the pictures a fair few of the rioters are black. Doesn't make them immigrants, or foreign.

News is reporting the first death during the riots. Some bloke got shot during the trouble last night and has now died. Since the police didn't do it, I don't expect there to be much r3eaction to this. Looks like it was someone using the trouble as cover to shoot a rival gang member. I didn't realise London was a suburb of LA...

Most shops in Birmingham are in lock-down now, including the whole of the Jewelery quarter, police expecting trouble in the next few hours.

Talk of stuff kicking off again in Birmingham later.

I'm shocked that people ain't been killed in the fires these idiots are starting in shops under peoples homes.

I'm close to canning town and i hear that here they looted Mcdonalds for big macs and double cheese burgers oh and don't forget the mcnuggets and bbq sauce LOL

'It's the Government's fault, I dunno, innit'
'Yeah, Conservatives or somethin'

They also seem to think business owners are at fault, purely for being rich and having money. I can't express my anger over that clip.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention Famine, truly gobsmacking the stupidty. I can't say I'm surprised however.

Listening to the statement made by the police on Radio Merseyside earlier it sounds like they will be out in much greater force tonight in a bid to prevent what happened last night happening again. They have also said they are using CCTV images plus those provided by the public to identify and prosecute the offenders, hopefully the courts will give the maximum 10 year sentence to each and everyone of them.

He also praised the community clear up organised by the local council and local residents as this is a true representation of how the people living there feel.

EDIT: Like this on Smithdown Road Liverpool

Trying to wrap this up as some sort of social protest is BS... the whole of society is under pressure from the same set of economic challenges, yet you don't see middle class, middle aged people looting shops. There's no magic wand the government can wave to suddenly make the economic problems go away, and the UK is in a much stronger position than most other countries.

This is theft of propery by people who think they can get away with it, nothing more, nothing less.

Send in the army.

Was.

1,000pt wiped off the FTSE since Wednesday last, to be followed up with lots of insurance companies liquidating stock to pay for damages and repairs over the next few weeks.

Hope so, the stuff that happened last night was way too close for comfort and I live down by the nice shops, which could well be a target if they go for the London approach of "lets show our dismay at the police shooting someone by nicking all the high-end gear we can get our hands on"

Yeah, someone tweeted me that yesterday - thought it was hilarious.

"OK, got my new Nike's. Got my new iPhone. Helped my brother home with the new 50" TV. Right, now I'm starving!"

The smash and grab went to their heads... had to still cook it though. :sly:

YES! More please!

Remember when this was happening(and it is still happening) in Bahrain? British media ate up Bahrain's government and called it a tyranny for violating those thugs' human rights. Hell, even formula one drivers (Mark webber specifically) went all hostile on Bahrain's government.

Now you know how it feels? Those ***** killed over 6 police officers and terrified thousands here, yet all we hear about in the foreign media is how bad the government is and how we should listen to their demands.

You know what's worse? You're pushing our government to release the apprehended terrorists and they're actually doing it. Soon our streets will be flooded with them again.

Karma's a bitch! Too bad it's not on such a big scale as it is here, and that you won't be forced to release the criminals out of prison.
