Having grown up in a country where rioting and public mayhem is usually regarded as an annual sporting event (South Africa), I can say that the standard response is largely:

1) Crowd gathers peacefully; chants
2) Riot police gather; observe
3) 'Peaceful' crowd starts getting restless, something is thrown, mayhem ensures
4) Riot police start raining tear gas into the crowd
5) Crowd either disperses, or if they get precious..
6) Riot police start using shotguns with rubber bullets.
7) Crowd disperses.

my piont exactly...just blast them pathetic puney little heads with a shotgun and some rubber bullets! COD style! :D

This is disgusting, totally unrelated to the original shooting and being used as an excuse for anarchy. On a positive side 200-300 thugs in Birmingham have been trapped by police, lets hope they're arrested asap.

haha great stuff!

Quick update from Dalston. The fools tried to get in to some shops in the high street, and the turks, tooled up, gave them a hiding and they disapeared as quickly as they turned up.

Are you purposely being obtuse?

How many special ops do you think reside in the London Metropol to go and winch threatened citizens off rooftops.
I see the search and rescue helicopter about 4-5 times a day near me. It will go out at the weakest of excuses, lost dog etc.
If an actual human is in danger a huge amount of resources are invested in it.
You must live in a place where the emergency forces don't care about doing anything.
But it might be that mine are too eager to do anything and would rather be up in the air than be ready on the ground.
Anyway I don't get cities, they are a mystery to me.
I'm not claiming to be an expert.

BBC news is now reporting what's going on in Ealing (my area). Aparently there are fires and shop windows smashed. This is all about half a mile from my house.

Indeed, my friend who lives just off Hangar Lane is getting pretty panicky right about now...

Shameful.

Time for Cameron to be a leader, he's one of the reasons the country has gone up the *******, time for him to step up to the plate and back his police and allow them to do whatever is necessary.

Comes down my way and I'll be doing what those Turks have been doing, they've got the right frame of mind. Though am in a retirement town, so probably not. :D

All you GTP Londoners/Brummies out there, stay safe.

Even ignoring how ridiculous this is:
Again, why is "get all the people out of the area, but then let the city burn" an acceptable solution?

Still waiting for an answer...

And all this happens while the capital city is being burnt to the ground with the mobs ruling the streets.

And where do you live, pink and fluffly land?

I was really surprised how the situation got out of hand but than I thought that it's actually cold calculation by the looters. They seen how the first incidents have been dealt with and thought that there are pretty good chances that they can get away with looting a shop or two.
If the first incidents were contained quicker and with more immediate consequences for the looters than the following looting would be much less probable to happen.
I don't think the UK police has enough power to deal with the looting as it should. Where I come from the incident like that would have been contained with water cannons and plastic bullets quite decisively (it is not a protest against anything, it is a clear criminal activity fueled by greed!) It makes me feel quite uneasy being in London right now.
For whatever reason the police force lost it's deterring factor.

Sureboss

lol yerh be part of the 'big society' or whatever that muppet came up with...!

Which end of Hangar Lane? If he's near the Common that's pretty close, if he's near the Gyratory he's about the same distance as me and should be fine.

Well, I'm meant to be spending a few days in london this week...
At least I don't live where there's any rioting.

Members not signed in? People looking for info (there's a lot on here)

We're on page 4 of a Google search for 'London Rioting' so that explains it. Funny that of all the websites in the world, what is essentially a Gran Turismo forum is on page 4 when you search for info on the riots!

Some of my friends live in London, fortunately they are in Birmingham at this time, however, there are any riots on Wood Green?

It's a good community :)

From what I've read the looting in Birmingham has been concentrated on the city centre (unlike London where its in residential areas too) and there are no reports of arson so its less likely their are serious injuries

You are asking if that is acceptable solution.
It's not an overall solution, it's just the solution to protect people in danger.
Worry about the people, then any property afterwards.
Let London burn if it has to burn. Evacuate the whole population to France or something, it doesn't matter. My point was just prioritising people over buildings.
And that i'm against people with guns getting involved.
I don't know what the big solution is, just my concerns about developments.
I just imagine weaponised force making the situation much worse. And perhaps morally wrong. But I'm all ears to the debate and options.
