I figured out the Astros were off for Monday. So this gives me a chance to offer a little assessment.
Overachieving? Lucky? Surprisingly good? The Houston Astros Baseball Club lost their last series with Tampa Bay. Despite the fact the Astros have been winning a lot of games lately, we are still bringing up the rear in the AL West. Leaps and bounds improvements as well as slip-ups from the rest of the AL West could bring the Astros from being the caboose on the AL West train to maybe being one of the other cars on that train. Or with LOADS of luck... the main engine itself on the AL West. It is possible within a year or two that the Astros can actually be relevant again and perhaps be a contender. If not for the AL West, then MAYBE an AL Wild Card contender. If we're talking Wild Cards, I can only hark back to the 2005 season. The Astros won themselves a Wild Card back in the NL Central days and made it all the way to the World Series. So anything is possible. I'm actually happier and more positive about the 2014 Houston Astros as opposed to last year's 51-win club. Who knows? Maybe we'll match or better that little promotion of 63 wins. For the uninitiated, the promotion is that Gallery Furniture's "Mattress Mack" turns 63 this year. If the Astros win 63 or more games this season, everyone who purchased at least $6.4K in furniture would get all of their money back and their furniture free of charge. And with the Astros currently at a record of 32-39, they are a little over halfway home to matching or bettering that interesting promotion.
Players the likes of Chris Carter and George Springer have made a difference for the Astros. José Altuve (all 5'5" or so of him) carries the load for the Astros like a heavy duty pickup truck. Dexter Fowler is also pretty awesome for Houston. Dallas Keuchel has been a beast among the pitching talent. While we're a team of tomorrow, I'm certainly hopeful the Astros can be a team of NOW rather than so much the future. Astros fans should be happy regardless as to how things are going right now. Question is, can we keep it up and maybe pull some surprises? I want to equate this Astros team kind of like the 2013-2014 Phoenix Suns of the NBA... at least in terms of a team no one thinks will make any significant noise but surprises others with solid and consistent winning and hard play.
Maybe there is significant hope for the Astros to return to some sort of relevance. Maybe...
There is my little assessment of my team so far. Make your own assessments if you like. I still want to offer my thoughts and prayers in loving memory of Tony Gwynn and all whom have known and loved him after losing his 4-year battle with salivary gland cancer.
