i'v just completed this mission, winning by 0.7 seconds :D :D :D
this was the last mission i needed to do, so now i can concentrate on winning the final races :sly:
i'm so happy lol

Obviously, since I'm writting here, I'm having as much a nightmare with this challenge (maybe more) as everyone. I'm trying to do it without lawn mowing and rail riding. But believe me, I'm not critizing anyone who does...not at all.

I was wondering, since the volume of info on this thread has gotten so long, could we start a string with only information for clean runs...I'm so far behind at this point, I'm looking to see where I'm going astray, but not looking at times representing cut throughs or rail runs.

As I said, no offense intended...just trying to reduce the reading time.

Thanks,
SS

Thanks bud! a nice piece of info in general. Maybe I'll get to use it on the real course some day.

Seconded, what a kickass link, this will make learning the names of turns and how to take them alot easier.

I am NOT improving.

The first time I finished, I was +20 (of course, after many non finishing attempts). And after a day and a half, I can only get within +12. I took some advice and bought a stock SLR and practiced the ring doing about 15 laps and a best time of 7'09.00". That really helps and all, but I can't transfer those good times to the actual competition. It seems like the car handles differently (better) in practice.

just beat the mission tonight, got tired of ****ing up and losing a couple precious seconds in the 2nd half of the track, and cheated by going over grass twice (which lowered my time by about 1.5sec each, giving me a little more freedom in messing up) and bumping the 300sl at the first sharp corner after the long ass straight

the closest ive came driving completely clean was like +3.1 secs

now that i have the black f1, im gonna play around with that :D and maybe later go back and redo the mission cleanly

Finally beat it myself. Been sitting at 99.8% for several weeks, going back and getting better A-spec points on races I've already won, and thinking (not very seriously) about A-specing the endurance races (B-spec'd 'em all!) Then went back to M34, Previous best was a couple seconds off or so, but I'd only finished second three times! This is with lawn-mowing and wall-riding. I'd done every segment of the lap well enough, just not all on the same run! There was always one missed brake point, or catch a wheel on a curb. Eight minutes of perfection is just too much to ask!

Then, all of a sudden, I'm in another attempt, and I PASS the 4th place car at a point I've never even had him in sight before! I actually paused the game to catch my breath, and work out in my mind where I was and make sure I knew the map in my head was right, and that I knew what was coming up. I ended up winning by 2.27 seconds, which is astonishing for the NA version, but remember I took some shortcuts: wall-rode Bergwerk and Karussel and took to the grass in the bends after Hatzenbach, again at Adenauer Forst, and there might have been a bit of "straightening the curves" through Pflanzgarten.

The thing that made this mission so hard for me is that my driving style is brake deep in - full throttle out. Can't do either on in this car on these tires. Early braking, and "excessive" patience on the throttle saves the day here, and I just have so much trouble getting my head around that. I want to brake into the turn to the point where the car will take full throttle to accelerate out, and here, you have to breathe the throttle through many of the bends, or even just hold it low. I made my best improvements in this mission when I changed from my regular 11/10ths style to about 6- or 7/10ths, and worked up from there. Still couldn't get there without the shortcuts, though.

Im within 2 seconds now and I have a lot of improvement in the second half of the track. So I am beginning to see how this is possible. I am doing the first half nearly perfectly and passing 5th right before karossel. But the next few bends i ALWAYS f up, I just don't know that section as well as the first half. Im passing 2nd place at Tiergarten, which is late and especially tricky.

Nice to see you're still improving.

I did the impossible today, beat the mission by 2 seconds driving almost COMPLETELY clean (no bumping/riding walls, no shortcuts thru grass, no bumping cars) ..in fact i watched the replay again and at least 2 of my wheels were ALWAYS on tarmac

i'll upload pictures sometime later next week, they turned out awesome :)

but here are my times:
T1 +1'50.1
T2 +1'41.1
T3 +1'33.9
T4 +1'20.2
T5 +1'07.4
T6 +55.7
T7 +39.9
T8 +31.7
T9 +24.9
T1 +12.8
T11 +4.5
T12 -2.4

FINAL TIME-9'12.9 (+123 sec wait)

i think there were only 2-3 turns i didnt nail, where ideally i could've gone about 10mph faster

edit: more info-NTSC version, automatic transmission, DS2

i think i watched the replay of it at least 5 times, each time with a proud grin on my face :)

Linked in to that above, if there are no videos, does anyone have a Maxdrive/Sharkport NTSC (North American) replay of a clean (at least 2 wheels on road at all times, no wallhits and no AI touches) so that I can get a video made of it?

Unfortunately, Veilside has retired from GT4. I've PM'd hOt6o4bOi and MinorShunt.

all you had to do wa look back a few pages:

that 100.0% in the home screen looks so nice hehe

very impressive. I just finished this mission myself. Although Im at 59.8% complete :) After weeks of trying, I finally won by a 0.033s margin. That was with rear-ending 4th place for a 5 second penalty. I couldn't believe I did that given that the race up to that point was my fastest. Watching the replay, I realized that the car looked even uglier than it drove. Well, I'm just glad its over.

My best time is about 8 sec off the lead car. This is frustrating as hell.

*edit* just got -4.806

I changed my approach in that I tried to be smooth rather than attacking every corner like a madman. That seems to help. And I wall ride the karusel (sp?), but at this point I don't care.

this one was easy for me, but having spent the last 12 months pretty much just driving around this track in a RUF Yellow Bird on N1 tyres probably helped :D

the toughest thing for me was coming to grips with the driver aids applied to the SLR, but once I was familliar with how it behaved I had no trouble.

Must be nice to be all you people who beat this mission. I've been stuck on thing sicne getting the game the same yr of the release. I bought the SLR McClaren (sp?) last night and kept it stock. Went to the 'Ring, drove 5 laps and had a time of 7.14.094. That was my fastest lap. Went back to the mission and came 3rd 7secs behind lead car. My version of the game is not allowing me to pass this mission for some reason. Either I got the bad version where the mission is not beatable or my game has a glitch. But this mission is not passable on my GT4 game. I have the NTSC-NA version, and I use the dual shock controller that came with the slim line PS2.

I've looked at the pics in this thread and passing the cars where you guys pass them is next to impossible. I know the best driving for the track, when to break and when to coast, I know the track inside and out, and i know the track backwards because I drove the track backwards before. Every car I buy gets driven on the track for 2 laps. No matter that car I buy, I test it out on the 'Ring, no where else. I have just over 200 cars in my garage so that should tell you how often I've driven teh track. Over 200 times.
I have yet to watch the videos posted in this thread but the mission, I'm sorry to say PD, is not right. The car doesn't handle at all on sports tires, the track itself is full of flaws, such as coming up a hill, the cars 4 tires should not come off the road for almost 1 sec, as soon as a rear tire hits the grass, your a_ _ is grass and the car starts doing a slolem course down a straight!! I've been tempted to let the game collect dust because of this mission. When the car goes nuts I retry the race and wait yet another 2min 3secs to go.

For those of you who say "I beat it" or " that was easy", I'm interested in proof. A pic for example showing the mission status as "Mission Complete" accross the mission in the missions hall selection. I beleive something when I see it.

You can email me your proof ie=pic, video, some sort of hard core proof that shows me you guys beat this mission. Please because I need my confidence back because last night my TV was about to taste PS2 controller, same with the wall behind the TV as well was going to eat DS2. Thats how mad this mission is making me.....S.O.S

PS = If you want my email address, PM me when I'm online thanks

Went to the 'Ring, drove 5 laps and had a time of 7.14.094.

the mission isn't "easy" until you can get under 7 in practice.
there's nothing wrong with the car or the game, its just alot easier to lose time on the ring than you think it is.
The only *problem* with m34 is the waiting period.
if you could fast forward that, it would be the most fun part of the game, (as far as the default challenges go). I'm glad PD had the stones to put an honest challenge in one of these games.
They havn't set a "gold time" that was worthy of calling it an accomplisment since the viper on laguna in GT2.

Zonda, congrats on finishing and for posting these CP's. I'm real close to some, but I"m losing time along the way...this is a great way to see my progress. Looking foward to your pics when you can post them.

Ermac26 ... Dude ... YOU MUST CHILL!!! :) Just step away from the game for a little bit, count to 11 or 110... whatever it takes... take a few days break if you have to - you'd be surprised how much it helps.

PLEASE don't take this personally when I say you haven't even come CLOSE to driving the track enough to know it like you think you do. Oh you know it, don't get me wrong... but you also only know it how YOU drive it. There are ALWAYS better lines around certain corners, different braking zones, different thresholds the car can handle and ones they cannot. The game designers did a pretty decent job of car/tire physics and unless you have 400 laps in a REAL car on the REAL track, you're just fooling yourself into thinking you know it.

I have yet to watch the videos posted in this thread but the mission,

This negates everything you wrote aftwards... there are lots of video examples of people beating this challenge... go watch them. Some say they've done it with the game pad, most I think have done it with the Driving Force Pro. I myself haven't tried it yet with the wheel... the best I could do with the game pad was pass two cars. I'm taking a break from it and playing the 'other' racing game that just came out - its a nice break and I hope to take some things back to GT4 when I've had enough of the other.

Good luck to you... don't break anything... get a wheel!!

Very nice... do you normally drive with that camera view? Or was that just for replay purposes?

It looks like you're in 2nd and 3rd gear a lot more than I am... I think that may be my problem: this car seems to push REALLY bad... I guess I just need to go back to slow-in, fast-out metality.

Thanks :)
That view is for replays. I drive with the 'roof' cam. Staying in the lower gears helps to keep this car from pushing as much.

i did this mission yesterday. got 1st on the last corner. Using the PS2 standard controller. It is hard. took me about 40 shots. Only advice i can offer is think 1.5 corners ahead and concentrate more on the corners which really matter. the ones with long uphill sections afterwards. Won by 1.5 seconds

I do appologize :indiff: to those who think I was getting angry. I am calm now and I'm taking a break from the challenge right now. After work today, I'm going to give it a couple of trys :nervous: . My best time now after writing my last post for this mission thus far is 3secs and some change behind the lead car. My problem I think is I'm trying too hard. Meaning I'm breaking at the last minute and trying to get the most out of this car, causing me to loose time at the beginning of the track :guilty: . I'm now in a state of mind where I beat it I beat, I don't, try again :dunce: . I am catching up to the 5th place car earlier and earlier in the track but passing the bugger is challenging because he drives drunk, lol  . But I'm getting there and again, sorry for coming across very irate in my first post :dopey: .

If any one has any more pointers, feel free to PM me with any advice you guys can offer 👍 .

Thanks :)

Stack = sorry for scaring you with my post

Can you try another controller.
I was using a Dual shock that seemed OK on other tracks but at the ring the car kept pulling to the right in certain spots. I Swapped to another controller and the problem was fixed.

Uncle Harry = I do have another controller from the grey station days ( PS1 ) it's dual shock but I'm not if I can get the touch sensative buttons on that controller like I get with my DS2. So, if I can let me know...or anyone else can let me know...thanks :) 👍
