1965 Round 5 from Silverstone

Round 5 Mustang Silverstone 1965.jpg

With Silverstone being a power circuit, results at this round followed the capacity classes, with the Mustangs of Pierpoint and Baillie (D), followed by five Cortinas (c), five Class B cars and then Warwick Banks winning class A in the Works Mini Cooper S 970. Jacquie Bond-Smith was a DNF in a 7 litre Galaxie.

Regarding the mystery of the right hand drive Mustangs - I am not sure why a couple are raced today in historic events, but I will be going to the FIA Historic Masters Festival at Brands Hatch and hopefully will get a chance to ask Alan Mann's son Henry about the reason.

I agree with @joedakiss that the cars raced today are not the originals - five Mustangs were prepared in 1964 by the Alan Mann team. The one which was victorious in the Tour de France Auto road rally was whisked back to the USA for promotional purposes and was subsequently lost. One was sold to F English Ltd and after being painted dark blue was raced in some rounds of the 1965 BSCC by Mike Salmon until he was disqualified for use of a non-homologated rear axle ratio . It was then sold to the Dutch racer Rob Slotemaker who painted it red and raced it extensively - this car still exists and was recently restored by Henry Mann to 1964 Tour de France spec - it is not legal for modern historic racing due to lack of a roll cage and other modern safety features - it also produces an original sub-300bhp compared with a modern racers 450bhp.

One Mustang was sold to Alan Brown and was raced by Jack Brabham - unfortunately the car was fitted with non-homologated valve springs and valves resulting in a disqualification.

The other two Mustangs were driven in the 1965 BSCC by Roy Pierpoint - the eventual champion - and Sir Gawaine Baillie. Points were very tight and Warwick Banks, the Mini driver (Class A) was on target to win the championship, but Alan Mann was a brilliant team manager and called Sir Gawaine into the pits so that he did not take points off Pierpoint. His thank you for this gallant act was one of a pair of Rolex watches which Alan claimed on expenses from Walter Hayes of Ford - Alan kept the other watch for himself!

1965 was an incredible year for the Alan Mann team as they won the European Touring Car Championship with Sir John Whitmore, the British Saloon Car Championship with Roy Pierpoint and the World GT Championship with a team of drivers (for 1965 Shelby passed responsibility for the GT programme on to Mann as he took over the Prototypes from John Wyer).

NB at least two of the five Alan Mann Mustangs were not crushed - one went to the States and one went to Holland. If the other three were crushed to avoid excise duty (tax) this did not happen until after they had raced in the 1965 BSCC season. At the end of that year the rules switched from Group 2 to the wildly modified Group 5. The Mustangs were no longer competitive and were replaced with older Ford Falcon Sprints which Alan Mann had originally prepared for rallying - he had entered a very low weight on the original homologation papers so these cars were used by various teams in the BSCC from 1966 until 1969 (in 1970 the ruleset changed again).

Testing - Help Wanted

I have started testing for future multi-class series: Classic Touring Cars and Seventies Sports Cars, but would like some help to check my results. It is particularly helpful to get test results from some faster drivers to check the approximate lap time differences between cars. You can use any track - pick one (or two) which you know well enough to get consistent results on and let me know your times either by posting on this thread or by sending me a message.

NB I will be posting this message on both threads - the series are most likely to be held on Mondays in late 2018 or early 2019.

The little Lotus 25 is a lot of fun isn't it. It does have a tendency to launch the car in front skywards if you make too much contact though! Note to self - Best not make too much contact.

I might try and join this week if there's a space available. Yellow number 11 if possible.

If there is a second yellow car I'd very much like to use that one :P

What is the ingame time and wheater? This way we can setup a descent practiceroom.

No driving aufs allowed? No fuel consumption?

And is tirewear/damage on?

Will be an interesting race tonight I think. Lotus is a great car but we all need to be careful because it has no brake light, so we have to stick to our own braking points rather than relying on the guy in front otherwise we're going to have some shunts!

@Sick Cylinder now the Porsche pack content has been announced do you have any plans to integrate it into the 2018 calendar?

I'm hoping to use the Number 11 Lotus 25.

Regarding the DLC content - I would like to use of it, but it will need to be tested first. I've been working on a GT series using the Ferrari Daytona and hope we can also use the Porsche 911 Carrera 2.8 RSR.

We have a 1967 series coming up using the Prototype Ford Mark 4 and Ferrari 330 P4 - I am hoping that the Classic Le Mans track which is coming in June will be usable by everyone if the host selects it. Also that the 1968 spec Ford GT40 Mark 1 is included in the Le Mans Legends DLC - I don't see how any car could be a bigger legend than this as it won in 1968 and 1969 - so hopefully that will be included.

I would like to use the Porsche 908/03 and 917's plus the 917/10, but don't think we will have time for those until 2019 - It also depends on what other cars they can be used with - I want to avoid people having to buy the DLC if possible and think they should have a choice of an alternate free car.

We have a GTE series coming up on Wednesday's so it may be possible to add the new 911 although I think it has very few liveries.

There will be room in this series for @Tavilha and @Mr Tree also @IfAndOr and @lancervoo - that should fill the series.

Time progression is set to real with an in game race start of 15:00.

@AndreasR the German round will be at the Combined Nurburgring track - I hadn't realised that there is no pitlane in the game for the old track.

Good fun last night. Where were you @AndreasR ?

@Harsk100 poached my livery :ill: so I swapped to the blue number 3, which I now actually prefer :)

Had a bit of time to test some of the touring cars at Oulton (will update with the Trans-Ams and GTs when I can):

BMW 2002 SW – 1:53.1
Merc 300 SEL – 1:54.0
Ford Escort – 2:01.0

The BMW and Merc will be a great match-up despite their completely different characters. On tighter circuits the BMW's agility should give it the edge, as Oulton shows, but fast circuits should favour the Merc. With the right combination of tracks it could make the championship really interesting!

sorry I couldn´t make it monday night, Had been too sure to be back in time, but an unexpected traffic jam prevented me to do so.
Was in the room for the second half of the race as spectator, but wished to be in the race though.

Next monday will be there for sure.

Any tips for driving , this car, to get quicker.:)
Press the right pedal more press the left pedal less. :D

Actually there's some truth in that because the Lotus does have a lot more grip in the corners than you might think.

I thought this week we had no racing at all.
Monday was on but Wednesday is off. With it being valentines day Sick must have a romantic evening planned. He'd better hope the wife doesn't find out though. :)

Never drove it on this game. Will have time this weekend so I expect to post a lap by then.

Life has been hectic lately and I am not doing any racing apart from the Wednesday’s race.

You made me chuckle with the last sentence!
