Welcome to Snail's New Monthly Gr4 inspired Friday Night racing, the Michelin Pilot "Super Car" Challenge presented by Snail. This is a full "road car to GT4 spec race car" parity series for those who want to build and race their own supercar. All available cars are inspired and built to race car specs to equal a GT4+ standard with the series to operate as our normal Micheiin Pilot Challenge has. All eligible cars will be Mid-Engine/Rear Engine with rear wheel drive or All-wheel Drive, and will be spec'd to a cross between GT4 and GT3. (Think GT4 production chassis and weights with GT3 power levels.)
All vehicles will have a base weight requirement that will not be adjustable, along with front and rear downforce maximum regulations for each car to stay closer to the lower downforce of real world GS/GT4 race cars. Other than these restrictions, all other modifications and tuning are open as long as the final Performance Point (PP) Value is less than or equal to 675.00pp.
A list of required tuning modifications and livery requirements have been made available and can be found in Section 3 of this post.
Race Events will be once a month on Friday nights, 9pm est.

Due to the inconsistent and unstable nature of open lobbies with cross platform use, this series will be exclusively for PS5 users only. Furthermore, drivers who sign up outside of the North American region will have their connection stability assessed among the remainder of the attending roster during test and practice sessions leading up to the season's start. If room stability is compromised, that driver will be asked to leave the event, or possibly the series if it cannot be resolved. I am determined to pilot a stable and smooth running series on this GT7 title. All cooperation will be appreciated. Please have a glance through the first post, and if interested sign up as follows:

-1 Race Night/Month over a 6 month season cycle. (December, 2023 to May, 2024)

-GS/GT4 Class using Mid-Engine and Rear Engine/Rear wheel drive and All Wheel Drive Cars (road car built to GT4 spec Race Cars)
-ABS is only aid permitted
-Unlimited Roster with grid priority on a first come, first to confirm attending basis for each event
-Vehicle base Regulations using a predetermined "675.00 PP" value maximum, regulated weights, and regulated downforce maximums to start the season.
-Success Performance Penalties and Awards will be issued after each event for podium finishers and drivers finishing outside the Top 10 Overall for each event to bring the pace of field closer to parity.
-Driver Scoring will be kept.

-9:00pm est: RACE ROOM IS OPEN (or Reset) for ENTRIES ONLY- Warm up laps permitted (Verify your Driver Specific BOP/PP regulations before making your entry.)
-9:15pm est: All previously confirmed driver entries must be in by this time. (Standby drivers will be notified via a posted invite in the thread if grid openings are available)
The Host or Series Director will instruct all Drivers to begin Open Qualifying. Run as many laps as you choose to set a time. Do not return to lobby for tuning or cancel your entry at any time during this Open Qualifying session. Park your car in a safe area on track or return to pits (do not cancel entry) if finished lapping early.
(Drivers entering the race room late, after 9:15pm est, may still make their entry and set laps using the remaining time available up to the start of Race 1 if a vacant spot is still available)
At approximately 9:30pm est, the Series Director or Host will message the finish of qualifying, and qualifying times will be Recorded.
After a short 2-3 minute break, we will start Race 1.
RACE NIGHT ANNOUNCEMENT
16 player Party Chat Policy
The Party Chat feature will opened after the Race Room with the following Rules:
1.) It is required that drivers enter the Open party chat to help in the flow of communication to start the night and communicate Caution requests/issuing and directives during the Caution.
2.) Open Conversation is allowed at the opening of the Race Room to the official start of Qualifying, approximately 9:15pm est. ALL MICs MUST BE MUTED AT THIS TIME, thru Qualifying, and Race (Host will remind all drivers to please mute mics before the call to start qualifying)
3.) During the race, Drivers may only come on the mic to verbally request a Caution/Yellow Flag, and for the Caution to be issued by the Race Director and directives related to the Caution.
4.) Once the race finish countdown is complete, drivers may resume un-muted conversation up to the call to mute mics before the next race.

Be reminded that no discussions regarding on track incidents are to be discussed, except obviously, if it is simply an apology and no more. Please review the penalty guidelines for more detail on this policy.

And Lastly,

Please don't be that guy who has their mic on the whole race (If your headphones do not have a mute feature, simply leave the party chat before the Qualifying Session begins**

-All drivers will start the season at a pre-determined "675.00 PP" value maximum
-All cars must adhere to their weight regulation and specified downforce range for the given car.
-Changes to driver PP regulations will be adjusted after each event based on each driver's Preliminary Overall finishing placement prior to any penalty points issued and will be noted at the bottom of the Drivers List Post.
-"PP" value adjustments will be issued after each event for podium finishers and drivers finishing outside the Top 10 Overall to dial in the parity of the field as the season progresses.

*Grid priority is on a first come, first serve based upon each driver's confirmation to attend each event.
*First 16 Drivers to confirm for an event guarantee their entry and grid spot for that event
*Any Drivers that confirm outside the first 16 will be on a Reserve wait list based on when they confirmed as well.
Race Night CONFIRMATION, ABSENTEE REPORTING, and PARTICIPATION POLICY
Driver "Race Night" confirmation policy
-A Confirmation Reminder Post with ALL drivers tagged will be posted in the main thread as well as a PSN conversation by the Friday of the week before a scheduled Race night
All Drivers, may "Early" confirm their attendance or availability at any time after the most recent Event to establish their priority and grid spot fo the next event.
-All drivers tagged are asked to confirm that they "will" or "will not" be racing by 5pm est Thursday (day before race night) to guarantee the scheduled race.
-A minimum of 10 drivers confirmed to attend will be required to guarantee the race night.
(if minimum is not reached, event will be postponed 1 week. If minimum is still not established for the make up date, the event will be cancelled and we will move onto the next venue)
Race Night Participation Policy
Any drivers that confirm their attendance for Race night are holding a grid spot and committing to a full night of racing. For this series format to function the way it was intended, participation to the end of race night is extremely important. Therefore, any driver who leaves prior to the conclusion of race night will receive points only for the race completed, and a -5 Point penalty will be assessed against that driver's season standing.
-If unable to attend due to a change of circumstances or plans, please notify me as soon as reasonably possible if you are unable to make the event.
*The latest acceptable notice without any recourse is 9:10pm est. *
Any drivers who are confirmed to attend, and fail to appear, will automatically default to a Reserve for their next confirmed event.


Exceptions:
(If you disconnect during a race, please return to the room and wait out the remainder of that race. This will satisfy the above participation policy.)
[Life does dish out Emergency situations. If this occurs, please exit the race and post the message: "Emergency Exit Needed" before leaving the room.]

Please remember that a grid spot was held for you to race when you confirmed attendance which placed other drivers on the waiting list. Let's be sure that the grid spots we are holding are being used up for the night.

ALL Drivers attending a race night event will be required to submit their performance spec sheet (via screenshot) to the series PSN group chat between the time that the room is opened (9pm est) to the start of Qualifying (9:15pm est)
-If Race 1 is missed, and the driver is attending Race, he must submit before the start of Race 2.

-These will be reviewed post event.
-Failure to meet your specific regulations or submit spec sheets will result in a 10 point penalty assessed against your total score for the event.
It should look like the attached picture, and must be done prior to every event. (Disregard the 650.00pp regulation in picture, just an example)

  • Reminder: HP, aero, and ballast have the biggest adjustment effect on "PP". HP is NOT required to be the same as noted in the chart below. HP, aero, and ballast can be manipulated however necessary to achieve the PP maximum. ONLY weight MUST remain as noted, and aero must not exceed maximums.

Baseline Tunes used for Testing:
I used Priano tuning as a base with the parts shown and required for the series. Reminder, "Widebody" modifications are Required for this series. (Be sure to install "WideBody Upgrade" before adding Spoliers.) Racing Transmission ratios were left as they were (not Priano's tuned ratios), and aero adjusted to my liking and to achieve the 675.00pp spec.

As many here know, WarMachine is well versed when it comes to tuning and tuning knowledge. He took the time to build us some solid and confident baseline tunes for some good pace over the "stock" default tuning setups. He stated there is still a small margin for additional pace in each car with additional fine tuning, but found these to be quite fast as they sit. Please feel free to use them as a baseline and give them a try. Thanks to @Chris Kelley /WarMachine for your efforts in assisting the testing and tuning for these cars.

Series Pre-Season Parity Testing and Results Links
1.) Each Driver may request 1 change of car to another eligible car within the series per season.
2.) Drivers must pm me formally of their request with their new car choice.
3.) A new livery must be rendered, submitted for approval, and a new driver side profile picture must be provided to update the driver profile page and spotters guide.
4.) Drivers who have earned any concessionary PP, will default back to the starting 675.00pp regardless of how many were accrued.
5.) Drivers with any handicap points are not eligible to change cars until they return to the 675.00pp starting regulation or have moved into concessionary PP regulations.
6.) No car change requests will be accepted after Event #4 (past mid season)

4.) Caution Procedures
Yellow Flag/Cautions Process
Since this series will be a (2) 30 minute race format, we will be instituting a "Called Caution/Yellow Flag" feature to regroup the field in the event of an incident. (1 Caution available for each Race)

The following processes and rules will apply:
1.) ALL Drivers must enter and remain in the 16 driver party chat whether they have a Mic or not. (Chat audio will come through your monitor/tv for those without a headset.)
2.) Mics must be muted at all times, Except:
a.) When a driver verbally requests a caution/yellow flag, or
b.) When the Host/Race Director grants and calls the "Full Course Caution", or directions during Caution (Green this lap, etc)
NO OTHER VERBAL CONVERSATION IS ALLOWED DURING THE RACE
3.) Drivers should continue racing until the Host/Race Director verbally calls out:
"Full Course Caution"
4.) Single Car accidents or "off-tracks" are not permitted to request a Caution at any time. (This can be cause for distraction and will be met with a penalty assessed post race)
5.) At least (2) Drivers of any size incident must request a Caution for it to be issued.
6.) ALL drivers must slow to 65-70 mph, single file, and avoid any contact with other cars.
7.) A maximum of (1) Cautions/Yellow Flags per Race will be afforded. (If there are incidents after a caution was granted, we will stay Green Flag.)
8.) NO PIT STOP. This is a regrouping caution only.
9.) The Caution period will be the remainder of the lap if the incident occurs early in the lap and the field can be quickly re-grouped, or one additional lap if necessary. Race Director will decide and instruct when the field is to return to Green, or whether an additional lap is necessary.
10.) NO Cautions will be granted for any incidents that occur in the final 2 laps of any race.
11.) Cautions called and Granted in the Opening 2 laps will be issued, leaving none left for the remainder of the race. In this situation, the incident will automatically initiate a review with penalties being issued to the driver(s) that created the incident.
PLEASE TAKE CAUTION IN THE OPENING LAPS AND AVOID INCIDENT IN ANY WAY POSSIBLE

How to Call for a Caution:
(At least (2) Drivers of any size incident must request a Caution for it to be issued.)
1.) Verbally over Mic, say: "Caution Requested, by (your name)"
OR:
if No Mic, text in the chat box: "cr" or "Caution"
(If no response from the Host/Race Director within 10 seconds, request again)
2.) Host/Race Director will respond:
"Full Course Caution" when acknowledged.
(Drivers should continue to race until the Caution is acknowledged and issued)

Play by Play Process during a "Full Course Caution"
Once "Full Course Caution" is called:
1.) The Overall race leader becomes our pace car and is to gently slow to 65-70 mph, with all drivers catching up and slowing to the 65-70 mph pace speed, single file and in the position they were in when the Caution was issued
2.) Overall Race Leader is to pace the field for the remainder of the lap when the Caution was issued and/or 1 complete lap if necessary.
3.) All drivers are expected to be grouped up before the final corner. If not grouped prior to final corner, the Race Director will instruct an additional Caution Lap.
4.) Once the field is grouped up and the Race Director is satisfied, he will announce "Track going green on my Call"
5.) All drivers are to maintain position and pace speed until the Race Director calls " Green flag, go, go, go"
6.) The Race Director will call the start at any point from the exit of the final corner up to the finish line for long straight away start/finish lines, or on the longest straight following the start/finish line.
7.) Drivers are not to try and jump the start. Any Driver that causes contact or overlaps the car in front of them in any way prior to the green flag being called will recieve a 5 point penalty assessed to their overall point total for the night. Wait for the Green flag call.
8.) Drivers may begin racing as soon as "Green Flag" is stated by the Race Director.

Drivers may file incidents after the last race on Friday race night to Monday at 11:59pm est of the same weekend.
Penalty filing instructions
-Submit your incident(s) by filing via pm to the Chief Steward
NOVA-0479 (Chief Steward)

Incident filing PM's must include the following in this order for each incident to be accepted:
*Conversation Title: "Your PSN ID": IR filed against "PSN ID of driver you are filing on"
*Include the following information in the report:
-PSN name of the driver being filed against
-Your PSN name
-Race Number the incident occurred (Race 1,2)
-the lap number that the incident occurred
-the time the incident occurred (Use time posted in the middle of the screen)
-description of the incident being filed

(Multiple offenses filed on the same driver may be included in the same group PM)

The Chief Steward will select 3 peer drivers to judge the incident(s) in question and will review all incidents filed and submit a ruling in the respective incident group pm by 6pm Friday of the next race event.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD AN INCIDENT BE FILED OR DISCUSSED IN THE MAIN THREAD, IN RACE, OR THE INGAME LOBBY. The Stewards will be utilizing the penalty guidelines set up and used within the Snail Spec Racing Series. Follow the link below for:
Penalty judging Guidlines
All Stewards are to review a replay of an incident in question and reply to the PM with their opinion as to what "Level" the incident falls under, and a recommended point value within selected level to deduct.
*The Chief Steward will make a final review of all incidents filed, taking into account any rebuttals and the other Steward's grading of the incidents and will make a final ruling for issuing penalty points.
*Please Note: If the Chief Steward deems, in any way, the lead driver lost control, and the chase driver attempts to brake or evade, but still makes contact, no penalty may be issued at the Chief Steward's discretion. *
Penalty points will be shown in the Overall Season Standings Scoresheet and will be deducted from the event score it was recieved.

The SNAIL Michelin Pilot Super Car Challenge thread has been established. Available cars are noted with required specs in Section 3 of the 1st Post (except for Maserati which will be spec'd asap), along with build requirements and livery requirements.

Format and rules are the same as our current series. All cars are available when signing up. Please follow the sign-up instructions to formally cast your entry for the series. I'd like to join the series but I don't want to be off the pace all the time. Would anyone be willing to team up? Not asking for someone to tune for me but some suggestions on changes etc to keep me competitive. I'd be willing to put in any time needed for testing etc etc.
I know Nova and I have had discussions about doing some team oriented stuff. We have about half a dozen guys that are pretty decent at tuning. I’ve worked with Sand all this season and he is doing really good. He’s starting to do his own thing. If we had the captains to cover every brand there could be a manufacturers cup. But that’s hard to do. Things get complicated. We would have to have a full field every race. People have lives and can’t be that committed. That’s understandable. I wouldn’t care to teach and take you in, or anyone else. But then you end up with a bunch of drivers in the same car. And that’s not good for the league. We need that diversity out there, and all these cars getting developed to full potential. This next class is going to be really impressive, very close. I mean close. We would just have to bring up the topic to guys like Duc and other tuners. Like I said, all these cars deserve attention. Nova has done a great job putting this car list together.
I do know that running a team with this handicap in place is rather difficult. Because you end up being at different PP than your teammates. You can devise a base tune, but your teammates have to be able to adjust and give feedback. Every time you fall considerably in PP a new tune has to be brainstormed. Because you can’t use the same aero, engine package, or ballast position. It’s pretty difficult.lol
When I came into the league my goal was take the Camaro to the top. I knew it was an underdog with its aero limitations. Because the nose is fixed, it just can’t do what the other brands are capable of. And it shows when we get to the high speed venues. Then it makes so much power stock. So when you lose PP it just chokes the thing to death. You can’t just take some aero away from the nose sacrificing handling and keep the HP up. We have really had to leap some hurtles with it. But overall I’m proud of what we have accomplished.

I'm looking for more suggestions on changes I could possibly make that might result in changes to how the car is feeling. I know part names and a generalization of what everything does but I could have glaring mistakes and not realize it. I can describe how the car is feeling but not sure what to change. In the long run it would be nice to learn over a season so I could eventually figure it out kinda like sand.
For instance, duc mentioned last race some folks were seeing good results adjusting the front sway bar in a bit. I did that and i seemed to find a bit of pace but I wondered the whole time if it was enough, or should i be adjusting rear to match.
 
A lot of that just comes down to preference. Like last round. I had tuned the car down to an 11.90 . But we all practiced together before the race. So I realized real quick that I wasn’t going to match their pace. I had the thing freed up running it on the edge. The top of the mountain would hold it. The corners where cambered (banked). But through the bottom, what is that Murray’s and Hell Corner? Well, it’s flat down there. So you don’t have that banking to hold the lateral force. Well, I would snap loose down there, especially in traffic. So I knew the problem. It was rear camber. So I added a little camber to the rear and snugged it up down there. Then dropped the rear spring rate to get back what lost across the top. So I did the same thing but just in a different way. I wasn’t as fast, but I gained security. I couldn’t match pace anyhow, so I went with something more consistent and stable. It paid off for me. Yeah, we all tune for pace. But then there comes a point where you have to think about backing things off a bit for race trim. Clean air is everything. So when we have a good car, we set up for clean air. Then you just go out and hot lap, hoping you don’t have any company up there. That’s why a lot of times when we reverse grid and the winner starts last, he doesn’t make it back to the front. The car behaves differently back there. But when you know you don’t have the car, you better be ready to experience the pressures of being in traffic. So you give yourself a little bit more to lean on. Something more forgiving. If you don’t, then you’re taking a risk that you’ll put her off in the weeds. And we all overstep it now and then. I tune all month for that race. But in that last practice, I guarantee you I’m changing something. Most of the time right down to the wire. Lol

This is exactly how I felt too, and I will share what I did.

I got a wheel setup (G923) earlier this year, and even though I was playing GT for a while, it was only casually...until getting the wheel. Now it seems to be all I do. lol. I didn't know much about setting up a car except the lifetime of watching motorsports and whatever I could transfer from dirt bikes, since I spent most of my life racing motocross.
I had a feeling that my driving skill (which has been getting better) was what was going to hold me back. I chose the McLaren last series even though it was not my favorite starting out. I didn't expect to win many if any races, but I thought it would be fun to develop the McLaren and try to make progress throughout the season. I think now (even though my PP is high) I have a really good tune, and just need to get my driving to match.

Now with other series that I run, I LOVE the tuning aspect of GT7, and trying to make cars better. If it helps, I will share my process.

First I get the car in the series specs with engine parts, ballast, downforce, etc.
Then I try to get a base "tune" using the tuning calculator I found here: https://www.gt7tuningcalculator.co.uk/
After that, its laps and laps writing down what the car is doing each session, and using "cheat sheets" to make adjustments. My main test track is Catalyuna w/chicanes FWIW. I like the mix of fast/slow corners there.
I don't use the cheat sheets much anymore...just because I'm now starting to learn what to do by memory.

Of course there was and still is a lot of trial and error to make it all work, but this was much better than trying random changes. There is also personal preference...for example, Praiano's tunes here on GTPlanet don't ever work well for me and my driving style.

Now, unless I flub something, there should be cheat sheet attachments in this post somewhere. :)

I’m starting to build the cars for testing, do we put the widebody on or not ? Section 3.1 stipulates that the widebody must be put on but section 3.3 points to the contrary. I’m looking at the photos and your cars look stock so I was wondering.

Widebody ON, and thanks for the catch. Much of the 1st post was Copy/Pasted from our current series which prohibited wide body. I will edit accordingly.

That tuning calculator is a good thing to have, but it’ll only get you a rough estimate. It’s not the greatest for what we’re doing. It does give you a good idea of how everything works though. It does cut down on the time it takes to develop a base for the car as well. Which is good.

Yeah, the tuning calculator just gets a base. You still need a lot of tuning passed that. You even have to input things like ride height yourself so it does require a little knowledge beforehand. It definitely worked better in some situations than others.
 
Getting on a plane to head back to the states from Kenya....all this talk is getting me excited to get back behind the wheel after being gone for a month! 👍
 
I have a friend from Tanzania. She has brought me a lot of cool stuff from over there. I can’t say I like the booze tho. Yuck! Lol
