Side note, the last lap has continually churned the quickest time. I find that odd for a couple reasons. One side of my brain says that concentration would be down at the end, thus generally slower. The other says that having navigated so many laps prior to the last, I've simply gotten the hang of the track. Any opinions?
Your tires are reaching the best performance doe to compound heating > best lap times.
Reaching optimum tire heat is heavily dependent on few factors in GT5: actual car weight, weight distribution, drivetrain configuration, type of pavement (asphalt) on particular track, actual track configuration and corresponding meteorological algorithm (noticeable in online races, especially on *time and weather* enabled ones).
Every car have different way of heating tires and every track have pretty much different *pavement factor*. Also, air temperature and moisture (on *time and weather* races most noticeably) are influencing the heating/wear of your tires.
