North Korea, Sanctions, and Kim Jong-un

Kim Jong-un is reportedly carrying out a purge of senior officials after the last round of talks with the US failed to bring about the lifting of sanctions on the country, including the execution of five foreign ministry officials. Source (paywall). Others have been sent to the gulags for 're-education' and forced labour, and even Kim's high profile sister who appeared alongside him in recent meetings with Donald Trump has not been seen in public for some time, amid speculation that she has been 'demoted' (whatever that might entail...).
That seems to be disputed now as the highest ranking officer who was said to be executed was seen in the latest Public appearance with un.

I wonder where is this information coming from about the executions, South Korean spies in NK??

South Korean media. Truly trustworthy source about DPRK.

They’ll tell you that the officer was executed by tying him to a missile and getting him burned by exhaust gases. And his remains were eaten by dogs. And the dogs were eaten by Kim Jong Un personally.

Not to use an Alan Partridge quote but I guess a more humane method of execution would be death by firing squad.

Cheaper too if you think about it. Usually they only have one bullet in the chamber so the squad doesn't know who landed the kill shot.

Yes but that's still 12 bullets. Strap them to them rockets they keep launching. With a close up camera and the message. This is what happens when you disappoint me.

It would seem the Supreme Leader of North Korea wants to send the US a Christmas gift. You wanna talk about something that would get Trump reelected? I dont know that there's been a president during war time that didnt get a second term.

Let's hope that he doesn't read your post and decide to declare war on some random country to boost his re-election chances. Probably France, Macron's been sticking up for himself a little too much lately.

Fortunately, your posts are almost always much better than this one. It's ridiculous to suggest the US is going to attack France. If you know anything at all about Trump's campaign and election, you know he promised to get the US out of existing wars of choice, and not get into any more.

Hahahahahahahahaha!!!!!! Aahahahahahahahaa!!!!!! Oh man.... that is rich. I wonder Dot. At what point in that man's career, business or political, did you get the far fetched notion that Trump is honorable enough to follow through on a promise? The only reason that man would follow through on a promise is if its outcome benefited him more than not. They guy used bankruptcy as a business model. He has no integrity and no honor.

So did I miss what the Xmas gift is/was? I do hope it's a pony.

I have to imagine Trump is one of those people who call the French "cheese-eating surrender monkeys" and thus would think it's beneath him to go to war with such a lowly opponent.

This much seems true enough. So I made the optimistic assumption that reelection would benefit him, and that to go back on his basic promise of peace and prosperity would cripple him with his base. Ergo, there will be no war of choice, either with North Korea, France or anyone else. Poor France! They really have a case of the misery these days. In addition to all that, I think he's thinking about pulling the plug on NATO. Or at the very least taking a much harder line. Look at Turkey!! A NATO member buying S-400 Russian missiles and seemingly in the midst of switching sides. NATO has a dozen holes in the hull, and at least one well below the waterline.

I thought the idea that the US would attack another NATO nation, even one whose leader has been making zingers off the President of the US, was sufficiently obviously hyperbolic as to not require explicit indications. I mean, attacking France would literally mean that the rest of NATO would have to come to it's defence. However dumb people might think Trump is, not only is nobody that dumb but there is no general in any branch of the US military that would follow an order to attack an ally like that.

But that doesn't mean that he won't start a war if he thinks it'll benefit him. France as a specific target was a joke, but there's plenty of targets that have at least as much justification as was used to get into Iraq. @Rallywagon observation about war presidents was on point.

The funny thing about that is that having Russian supply into NATO actually benefits NATO. Having enemy hardware to analyse and test against in non-conflict environments is a major advantage, and it's why the western military is so secretive about a lot of it's technology. They know that Russia and China will eventually figure out their tech, but they want to make them take measurements while they're being shot at rather than just handing them the blueprints.

Even if the S-400 is worse than the equivalent NATO systems, simply having live fire examples is valuable for learning how to evade and avoid them. And it isn't worse, it's arguably the best system available at the moment "off the shelf" and the US has nothing comparable to offer to compete with it. Patriots and THAAD are not as capable, are far more expensive, and dealing with the US involves a lot of red tape that Russia will simply waive. If you're a leader in Turkey, a country that is legitimately in a position where they might have to use this hardware, it's not surprising that you want the best you can get.

It's been awhile since we've had a news report about the best Korea according to that Korea, but news reports surfacing online are looking into health concerns about Kim Jong Un. He missed the public celebration of his late grandfather, Kim Il Sung, on April 15th (I guess they still can claim "zero" COVID-19 cases).
Kim Jong Un reportedly in fragile condition.
