Here are the facts. PAL users get an additional 8 seconds to win this race! I won this race, with the NTSC version at 9'13.090 I had to bust my balls to win this race and now PAL users are spinning their cars out, taking a 5 second penalty or two, and still winning by a good margin. My margin was .6 of a second. If you have the PAL version and are not winning by at least 8 seconds you need to rethink how good you are. I stand by this statement.

I total agree with you Speedy. For us who have to NA version we have to do everything perfect to earn that small of margin by the finish line. If you spun out (even once) or received deadly 5sec penalty, you pretty much have to restart.

Mr.Slow
I just beat mission 18 and what you are saying doesn't make sense. If you passed the Sauber into the last chicane your total time would have been around 9:35ish. That is not under 3 minutes per lap. Did you mean "just over 3 mins /lap"?

This must be another one of those "different versions/different racing" deals. My finishing time was 9:10.896, with a margin of 1.206 over the Sauber. Since the clock was at around 14 seconds when I crossed the line to start the first lap, I ran under 3 minutes a lap.

That puts my laps in the 2:58 to:59 range. I have the NA version.

I nearly aborted that run at the start, too, because the at the second right before the long straight (the turn just before the start of license test IA-16) I got really sideways with the left side in the dirt on the first lap. I figured, what the ****, keep running for the practice. I had nailed the chicane after the pit straight, so I still had some way on for the lap, and when I passed the Panoz well before the Mulsanne corner, I knew I was still in good shape.

I FINALLY DID IT!!! Mission 34 is over!!! :) :) :)
I have the NTSC version, it took me a LOT of practice, and lot's of sniping to get it.
No, I didn't do it w/ a clean race. I cut through the grass in 2 sections and rode the wall through two curves. I spun out at the end of the final straigtaway, and by some miracle only hit the rear of the car on the wall, so no penalty, then I was able to overtake 1st right before the finish line. Finished at 9'12.954.

Lol, thats great! Congrats.

Well, as for myself, I only have no.34 to do, but I have to say that all previous ones are cake. Really.
Didn't take me more than a couple of tries on them (first one was to get used to the car, and the second onw was to win).

I am reallt afraid of no.34 though...

Edit:
I'm still in it, but I just have to say that the SLR is frigging amazing! It one of the most responsive cars I got to control!
Fun fun fun!

Well if you won the rest of them that easily, I don't think the ring will give you TOO much trouble. There were maybe 3 or 4 missions that I got in my first two runs. Others gave me some problems. I seemed to have a lot more trouble on the 3 lap battles than on the 1 lap magics (except of course 34). But if you flew through all of the missions with such ease, it should only take you a couple of hours of practice to beat it. I personally probably spent about 12 hours totale before I was able to beat 34.

I've tried this one about 15 times so far, and i've only managed to come within 3 seconds... and I thought I ran it pretty flawlessly. Guess I gotta get used to Manual.

No, you have to get used to cornering smoothly. I passed all missions with automatic transmission. The key is to minimize slipping.. if you hear tires screech you're not smooth enough.

Yay!

Finally got mission 34 done! What a great course the ring is!!! And the SLR drives like hot knife through butter!

I found that drifting is key element in this mission, as drifting with this SLR is great.
Here are my split times (could've done better, imho):

+1:42:137
+1:25:963
+1:13:851
+1:01:??? (didn't get the numbers on time)
+0:50:063
+0:35:041
+0:26:926
+0:22:181
+0:11:408
+?:??:??? (missed that one)

-0:03:869

To tell you the truth, I had like 20 great starts that went bad cause of the damn penelty for bumping the cars... Plus I had two perfect laps that went bad right before the finish line!!!
Managed to get through in the end. Wasn't all quite difficult (used the DS2).

I think you have a PAL version.

Toshi
Either that or the 1:13:xxx split is the best effort I've ever seen. :D

You know Toshi, I've noticed something is wrong in the picture. After enough Mission34, i can still remember all the split times I had. But what I am trying to say is you suppose to get 11 split times displays. But H3's split time only showed 10. If he missed the first one which i had 1:49.xxx, then I will say that was a heck of run. What do you think? :ill:

Yeah I didn't even notice that. On my GT4, I've absolutley owned that first section, and the best time I ever had was somwhere in the 1:48.xxx's

I think so too, so far the best first CP time split i've seen is 1:48.xxx. I had that once (I think it was a high 1:48.9xx, had to cut some grass to get that time :sly: ), but i messed up during that attempt. However I was not able to get that time again during my later attempts, but I was able to finish the mission with much less errors.

This mission has the ASM and TCS turned on, any wheel spin as smellysocks just said will activate the TCS and kill your times.
Smooth driving, brake a fraction earlier, and take the widest line possible will help to add to your corner exit speed which is vital in a slowish car on a track with two loooonngg straights.

I can't say that I remember if there are 11 or 10 splits, but the ones that seem familiar are all 5-8 sec faster than "normal" splits for the NTSC M34 (1:49:xxx, 1:30 or 31:xxx, 1:18 or 19:xxx). I don't recall there being a split between the 1:49 and 1:31 ones.

Because I just finished the mission not too long ago, and you can imaging how long I have spent on that frustrating mission, I can still recall all my split times.
1. 1:49.xxx
2. 1:40.xxx
3. 1:31.xxx
4. 1:18.xxx
5. 1:06.xxx
6. 0:55.xxx
7. 0:40.xxx
8. 0:31.xxx
9. 0:26.xxx
10. 0:15.xxx (i am slow at this CP)
11. 0:06.xxx

and I won by about .2 or .3 sec, as you can see we have 11 time splits.

I wonder if someone could share some light on this. With only 4 missions left, I'm a bit stuck on mission 18. My version of GT4 is the Chinese version. The shocking thing is that I think theres a big difference on mission 18 between NA and the Chinese versions.

On the start of the chase, the clock has already been running some 13.50 secs. Now considering that the leading car (Sauber C9) always finishes with a time 9.09 min, it practically means that I have to drive 3 laps with an average time of 2.58 min to win the race. In the free run, I managed 3.00 min laps but to hit the target 2.58 is really difficult. I have seen a video of mission 18 based on the NA version and the finish time is 9.26 min. Now thats a fairly big gap between the 2 versions.

If anybody has done this mission on the Chinese version, I would appreciate your input.

Thanks.

hurray! i finally finished 34!(123s) it's a superman's mission i've to say, i'm not sure how many times i tried but i guess around 50. for me having got all gold license thinking nothing can be more difficult than that in this game, but mission 34 redefines what's "difficult"

i didn't wallride or shortcut, but i had to ride the curbs on almost every turn, and go on the grass when i had to pass those suckers.
i did it twice, once in 9:12:xx another is 9:13:xx

Yes, there is somewhat of a difference between the original Asian releases and the later NTSC/NA and PAL releases. In my NTSC/J game I managed to get the Sauber in the final chicanes. In the PAL game I had the entire last lap to myself...

That sounded to me like an accusation :( (Sorry, don't flame me)

Edit: There we go. If you have any questions, or in need of some better proof, than say it.

Finally...

Newbee question.
GT4 should be a level playing field with both version?
In Aus we use PAL,zone 4. The PS2 is PAL, that's the way it is.
So wouldn't the program writters make small setting adjustments to the
Merc so the end result would be similar to that .6 margin.
Or is the NTSC the Kamakuzi version of GT4.
I jump the 300 SL by .3
My course skill is only 71, but I get the job done.
34 is akamakuzi mission with PAL & NTSC.

cheers

^And how are those 8 seconds make their effect on the mission? I don't have a clue how or why this difference exists...

The effect is that you wait 115 seconds to start vs. 123, essentially giving you an 8 second head start on NTSC racers. Why it exists no one knows. Maybe one was an earlier version that slipped through QA...

I don't think it's that easy. There is no way that PAL will get this much head start.
So how is it that everyone gets similar results?

Edit: btw, I would like it if some of you would tell me how I did, based on my splits and pictures I posted. If anyone would be kind enough. :dopey:

This is too weird. I have the NA game, but my Mission 18 time was 9:10.896, just passing the Sauber at the last chicane. I was "questioned" :) about my time in a message in the big Mission Hall thread but it took laps in the 2:58 range to win. My Reply to that post.

Was it a PAL replay you saw?

As for advice on getting those coupla seconds, don't miss the braking point at the Mulsanne corner (end of the very long straight), straightline the chicanes as much as possible, even to the point of completely crossing the curbs. The red surface is OK.
